They stay, you will likely need to de-digivolve several times to raise talent to raise level cap/allow higher evolutions.

Once you reach mega you won't need to bother with talent as much, and items can raise it too, though I don't know how common they are.

So you don't auto-de-digivolve when the battle's over and you can opt to stay in your powered-up form forever after you've reached Mega?

Half the fun of Digimon is digivolving when the battle starts. That's like starting a Budokai match at SS3. I'd like to revert back to Rookie after each battle then be able to select at the beginning of a battle a few Champions to become and their own lineages based on the requirements of the battle.

No you stay in whatever form as long as you want.

But you need to raise your talent stat to raise your level cap and enable higher evolutions.

This is done by opting in to de-digivole and digivolving again. rinse and repeat.

Or items that I think are rare.

Once you got all the talent you need, you never need to do that again.
