This. Look for a school with a good computer science program. Some good schools even have a "specialization in digital media" or something similar that will let you take a few computer science classes specifically geared towards game making.

Game design is a whole other discipline separate from code and art

Not always, not if it's apart of a legit computer science program. Stony Brook in NY is known for its computer science program which is a normal comp sci program but in your last year you can take classes geared towards making specific things like games. They have a class on AI, a class on implementing art assets and GUI elements, ect.

Game Developers work INSANE hours, they get paid minimum wage, they sleep in the office, they don't get holiday pay or any kind of benefits.
All of this for 'the privilege' of making video games for a living

You're wasting your time and money if it's anything game related.

My college actually started offering a game design course this year; even the instructor for the class told me the chances of getting work in the game industry or anything related (such as simulators for aerospace/military) are pretty fucking slim.

You'll be better off doing CS/engineering and just learning about game stuff on your own as a hobby.

If you want to make games, you take a more general programming field such as software engineering. A degree in video game design would get you nothing except debt and the crippling realization that anywhere you try to apply to will laugh their asses off at the waste of oxygen that actually spent thousands of dollars going to school for FUCKING VIDEO GAME DESIGN

You know you could literally take any career path and still somehow end up in a video game based company, right? It's a huge industry, everyone gets their shot.
