I like the game but a few things:

>areas aren't that interesting, so much muddy swampy stuff and tons of ledges and those leaf roofs everywhere
>missing some really good monsters like Barroth and Narga
>get monsters like Khezu when an improved version (Gigginox) exists by now, why
>Charge Blade is too strong even without mastering the weapons intricacies
>No farm, just a substitute
>3DS-only so the controls are eh and the resolution is obviously terrible. I like the 3DS but any other platform at all would be better.

if a monster is not explicitly vulnerable to an element, that element will do nothing. Even monsters who are 'weak' to an element might not take significant damage from it on certain body parts.

It's also dependent on the weapon itself. For example a greatsword, the 400 raw one would be better everywhere. A 400 raw sword and shield would also probably be better, but the 200-200 wouldn't be awful if the monster was very weak to fire.

There's calculators for this shit but I generally don't worry about it much since I use weapons that favor raw damage, and bowguns.

For anyone having trouble getting used to the C-Stick:

It's not a tiny analog stick. You don't tilt it from the center to use it. Think of it as a tiny little dpad that has a pencil eraser on it. If you want to move the camera up, press down on the upper portion of it. You shouldn't be applying too much lateral force.

If you go into the options screen in 4U from the main menu there is a calibration screen where you can see how it works more clearly. Though you press on it like a dpad, it is capable of a full 360 degrees of motion. Is it as good as if they would have just cloned the left stick? Nah, but there's limited room on the N3DS so there's not really a good way they could have done that without making all of the controls all cockeyed. Once you figure it out (and it loosens up a bit with use) it becomes very efficient and I find it very comfortable.

No. Wrong. Stop. Element is only good as a supplement to raw, not a an instead of. If you're trying to find something good against multiple monsters, you're better off using a weapon with no element whatsoever, either that or poison. Just use whatever has the highest raw and best sharpness. In that example, Sword B would win out every single time against every monster ever forever.

Monsters don't come in impartials. They're either immune or slightly less resistant.

First, you have to get deep into damage calculations. Know that element values are actually bloated by 10x, and that raw values are bloated differently dependent on the weapon. Let's take Greatswords. They have a class multiplier of 4.8 on their raw to bloat their stats.

So Greatsword (A) with 769 raw and 600 dragon, and after dividing by 4.8 goes down to 160.2 and 60.
A greatsword (B) on the other hand has 820 raw with no element whatsoever and goes down to 170.

The bread and butter of greatswords is their charge attacks. Level 3 in particular. This has a motion value of 110 and an element value of 200, meaning that you do 110% of your raw value and 2x the element, so on a Level 3 charge, these greatswords will get:

A: 176.2 Raw, 120 Dragon
B: 187 Raw

However, since endgame dictates usage of the Crit Draw skill for critical hits on draw attacks (1.25x raw)...

A: 220.3R/120D
B: 233.8R

Now let's take two monster hitzones. Rathalos is a good example.
Head: 75% Cutting raw, 35% dragon
A: 165R/42D
B:175R

Greatsword A is better here. But elsewhere...
Stomach: 44%R/10%D
A: 97R/12D
B: 103R

Still good. That said, if the element were lower on (A) or the raw higher on (B) then (B) would win out.

It really is a case by case basis. On anything that has no dragon values whatsoever though, B would win out completely every time.

There are passing similarities to dark souls in the combat, in that your weapons are slow and deliberate, but that's about it.

You will find that the first quarter of the game is pretty easy, to ease players into the swing of things. High Rank is when it stops treating you like a kid, and G-Rank is when the gloves come off proper.

You should have watched videos before you just up and bought the game. It isn't for everyone, and while there is some overlap between the DS and MH fanbases, it is nowhere close to guaranteed that you will like MH.

You really should have tried the demo first.

You also have to take into consideration your Gunlance type in order to maximise your damage efficency.
Normal type has shit shelling/charged shelling but has 5 shots, making it's Full Burst utterly ridiculous, It's Wyvern's Fire is also decent albeit average in range(and thus hits on the enemy).
Long Type has 3 shots but has stronger shelling/charged shelling and longer range on it's shells, but it's full burst is weaker overall compared to Normal-type. It's Wyvern's fire is FUCKING RIDICULOUS and hits hard even at a distance.

I was kinda disappointed by how weak Dahren was compared to Jhen. The dude gets beat by a lonehunta before he even makes it to the dragonator.

I just crafted myself a Vavoom SA (the Kecha one). Thing is, now I'm feeling kind of torn about the SA. I like that, in most cases, it's pretty much a more mobile LS, but at the same time, it feels a little barebones. I see LS users talk about how they have to place themselves for GOTCHA BITCH moments, I see Lancers talk about how there's a lot of evasion and careful precision involved, then there's even the SnSers who are all about mobility. Then there's the SA and it's like "I hit it until I need to stop to roll away/heal/whet, then I got back and hit it some more. Sometimes I hit it in a different mode."

Do I need to git gud with the SA? Is there something I'm missing?

I just gave up with seltas queen again, it's tedious and disgusting. If you bother to kill seltas the queen literally runs around and is untouchable until another one comes along.

Honestly might even stop playing altogether. The terrain gimmick was nice but it FORCES you to play flowchart style for 30 minutes to avoid unavoidable terrain-based carting.

Greatsword main from FU (completed the damn game) and now GS does FUCK ALL for damage without all the end game buffs. Hitboxes are still shit (seltas queen takes the fucking cake.) and monsters still take off half your health just by moving forward making you have to just hit feet until it dies over 30 minutes every time until g-rank.

I think I'm done with this series.

I used switchaxe heavily in 3U, and it's just an aggressive type of weapon, sort of like Dual Swords, except instead of managing your stamina you manage your phial. Axe mode is for hitting precisely, breaking hard to reach parts and such, and sword mode is just LET 'EM RIP mode.

At full stamina, you can chop 9 times with the Hack 'n' Slash over a period of 6.5 seconds. That's 216 motion value. Let's add another 57 for finishing with the finishing swing, so it's 273.

Meanwhile, with the Side Slash -> Doublecut -> (Repeat) combo in sword mode, you can do side slash three times and doublecut two in that same amount of time. That's 203 motion value. Let's add one more doublecut (64) for the same amount of time as the axe mode finishing swing. 267. With power phial, 320.4. That doublecut really is doing sword mode good shit, although I get the feeling that this would trip about as bad as the hack 'n' slash, if not worse.

Hm. Something tells me that we might be seeing LS-tier overhauls of the phial mechanic over the course of the next few generations.

Honestly, Nargacuga is cool as hell. Glowing red eyes that leave a light trail as it moves, a scar across one eye when its face is broken, a rad beak, its wings are blades, it's got a long tail that actually looks like it should be used to whip things. It's also black and sleek, like a jaguar.

SA is to tail as Hammer is to head. Same basic concepts, different parts. A swaxer or charge blader's first priority on any hunt is to get the tail off while others focus on the heads and precision strikes.

I'd also argue that SnS is the easiest weapon to play, but that's just me.

Make sure you're going for the capture too, to maximize the drop. I've gotten beaks without breaks from captures. It's less likely, but it does boost the chances.

I'm using a GS relic I found that I upgraded and it's actually somewhat decent for LR (768 raw) but its problem is that it has about a sliver of green, ALL YELLOW and a sliver of orange. It's a PITA to keep sharpening that shit so I just yolo'd and bounced on him. Didn't think he'd die that quick.

I'll give you Narga, but Barroth is just an icy version of Narga (with a less interesting moveset outside of desert), and Gigginox is a poor man's Khezu.
