So, why do you still play post 2005 games?
Gaming peaked in 2001-2003 and the best by faaaar decade for gaming were the 90's.
Fuck modern gaming dude. Go emulate some classics.
>>
Play testers are so fucking retarded. Reading about how much more in depth Dishonored was going to be in old articles around announcement is saddening today.

Fun fact: the reason why Knife of Dunwall was dope is because they made those levels first.

This has been the case for a while. Therefore you can't really blame companies like Eidos for trying to "modernize" their stealth series like Hitman and Thief.

It's fucking shitty, sure. Since no one wins from them doing that. But they're trying to adapt, it's understandable if nothing else.

I watched a let's play that a couple developers did for Ratchet and Clank and they showed a lot of how testers changed the game. Like they were no longer allowed to have 90 degree turns because testers would run into a room and couldn't see a path forward and would turn around. Also a lot of puzzles had to be dumbed down so that kids could complete the game

Maybe because you're posing as a party-goer and don't want to arouse suspicion. Maybe they assume it's a pseudo-invisible wall that the devs put up to restrict your access, because that's happened as well. Maybe they've played so many shoehorned corridor shooters that the idea of going left or up is alien to them. Maybe the way the guard was positioned was taken as a cue there was no way to get up there undetected.

There's all kinds of reasons a choice to NOT go somewhere is made if the environment is made reasonably open. An obstacle like that, which is a clear deterrent (as you've had to avoid or kill guards up until that point) is likely to turn away players not because of idiocy, but because it comes off as the developers artificially limiting the player's scope of movement.
>>
>>283724946

Contracts came out 11 years ago. There are way more people playing video games now than back in 2004.

It's pure numbers. There are a large number kids and college guys who grew up on the 7th generation of consoles, which fueled that video game boom of the late 2000s.

2005 was a good year for video games. Things only went irredeemably to shit after 2007, which CoD 4 brought in the masses. Every year up to then felt like it catered more to original video game fans rather than the "wider audience".

You are definitely blinded by nostalgia is you think 2000-2005 was bad.

That's partially true, but the best games of the past far outnumber the best games of today.
There are also less shitty games now than there ever were, but games now don't aim for greatly pleasing a few, they aim for the middle as costs increase.
The fact that they grab random people off of the street or family and friends to play test rather than pulling from gaming communities should show you that.

Publishers want to aim for that sweet spot middle that satisfies as many people as possible and let advertising and over-promising hype-cycles do the rest.

Games right now live in the middle, and if you're experienced, you know better than the middle and you're probably unhappy. Less great games.
If you're new or stupid or you're a games reviewer that has to play everything, you probably love it. Less shit games.

Heres the thing.

In modern games, there are often entire segments of unfinished game that the devs either couldn't complete or cut out to re-package as DLC. And more often than not, their hint to the player that they can't go that way is an inivisble wall and an NPC saying "Don't do that". So I can understand the Dishonered. It's how modern casuals have been conditioned to think.

>>
>>283722259

The thing is, as they "streamline" games for retards who would get lost in any map more complicated than a corridor, they also teach future players to BE retarded - to assume that unless there's a flashing arrow on something and a mission prompt telling you to rub your dick in it, it can't be interacted with. Tyranny of small decisions, removing play from the game.

This is where the developers need to take a stance and say "No, we're not going to design our game for total imbeciles. We have higher standards than that."

>anyone who thinks a boss battle should be so hard it needs 14 or more attempts is an idiot
that edge

video games journalists need to let go of the notion that every game should be completed by every player without too much trouble. my 5 year old nephew couldn't beat wind waker if he tried. is that bad? no. he needs to git good. specifically he needs to l2read

if every boss is expected to be beaten after a maximum of X attempts, where the fuck is the actual challenge and actual achievement? sometimes there might be a part of a game that you can't do at all no matter how much you try. deal with it. you're not good enough. games are not movies. you can't reach the end by just sitting there.

very hard games are going to make less money in general but that isn't a reason to say games SHOULD be dumbed down. if a game won't cater to the lowest common denominator, their profits will suffer, but they'll have their pride as a result

This. It used to be, in the 80's, that you had to be among the top 5-10% most skilled to even be ABLE to beat the average game. Beating a game was a rarity, a momentous occasion that you celebrated at the schoolyard. Then we got all these movie faggots sneaking into the industry, people from a noninteractive, utterly unchallenging medium acting like beating a game is a right. Like just because someone paid money for the game, he should be allowed to see every bit of it without putting in effort, without getting gud.

You didn't need achievements in classic games. Beating them was the ultimate achievement in itself.

You should look for challenges and senses of achievement in real life, not video games. It's only this small, pathetic section of gamers that have literally nothing else in their lives other than the games they have played that demand that all games be difficult enough to give them a sense of self worth for toiling over. If you need that kind of validation from a computer game, you should probably kill yourself.

That whole view of addiction is completely antiquated and believed by absolutely no-one in the scientific community anymore. The consensus it is it societal pressures and alienation that destroys lives, and drug addiction is just a symptom of that.

That's why it totally destroyed the world back when it was legal in a lot of places right?

The problems come when you can't afford to keep it up, or suddenly get a dose that wasn't cut properly so it's too pure, shit like that. And it can happen just because the price per gram in your area jumped. If it was regulated and sold the issues with it would be way less prominent.

Values in vidya production have changed and depending on your point of view its for the worse.
I am not a big fan of the "cinematic" experience that modern gaming has taken and so I really couldn't give a fuck about the garbage you fucking casuals play, especially when it breeds nothing but stagnant bullshit with no innovation or actual FUN.
