Turn on lots of lights and lamps and turn down your monitor's brightness so it matches the ambient light in your room through your camera.

Camera's are way more sensitive than your eye. On automatic they use the monitor as the light level to adjust the f stop and ISO so your room looks dark as fuck. If it uses your room to adjust the settings than your monitor is blown out and and your room looks normal.

I kind of had an idea of where I wanted to go with it

I started by increasing the core clock until it was unstable, then did the same thing with the memory
I had to unlock the voltage limit, but I only had to up the voltage by a small +20mv increase to get stable
Took a few hours of stress testing to find the highest stable clocks, but it was worth it for the sizable performance increase

Download GPUZ, benchmarks and stress tests like Heaven, Valley, Furmark, Firestrike etc

The overclocking software I used was MSI Afterburner, which works on all gfx cards
There are lots of vids and guides out there to help you get started

The MSI cooler is great, even with my overclock I don't go above 68C with 60% fan speed, which is extremely quiet

Guys, I'm buying all the pieces for my new build in 3 days. I've budgeted carefully for months.

I'm...I'm still planning on buying a 970. I simply won't use AMD for graphics cards anymore after endless bad experiences, lack of driver updates, incompatibility with nvidia-only games, etc. I recognize nvidia sucks for 9000 reasons, but I recall everyone cheerleading the 970 for a very long time with no issue before this "discovery."

Never heard of that happening

Mine's fine

He's fishing for replies like yours.
However, while he's not really "poor", he definitely isn't well-off. If he was he'd throw most of that crap out/sell it and start over with better, higher quality shit.

1) Replace Hyper 212 EVO with Cryorig H7. It's quieter, better performing, easier to install than the EVO and cheap. Don't expect much overclocking potential with a budget heatsink though (this includes the 212 EVO and Cryorig H7).

2) That motherboard has a Killer NIC which has known to cause system stability issues (unfortunately a lot of MSI gaming motherboards have these). You should choose a different motherboard (avoid Gigabyte motherboards, they're awful).

3) Consider moving down to a mATX motherboard + mATX case if you're not going to make full use of an ATX board.

4) You should bump up that Samsung 850 EVO SSD to at least 250GB. It's better value than the 120GB model.

5) You could switch out the WD Blue for a WD Red. Red's are excellent bulk storage drives.

6) Power supply wattage is overkill for this build unless you're going to SLI. Get the Rosewill Capstone 450W model instead.

7) Get the cheapest compatible RAM set that: runs at 1.5v or below, operates at 1600mhz, and does not have tall headspreaders/heatsinks. Brands don't really matter at all. There's one RAM set listed on PC partpicker that fits all these criteria for just $58.

Not much else I could say aside from these.

Thank you. Seriously.

I just switched to this motherboard last night because my previous one, Asus Z97-PRO, seemed like overkill and is a retarded 180 bucks right now. Any recommendations?

I was thinking about increasing SSD storage like you said since this build was 1500 a couple months ago.

Best feedback I've received on this build, thank you so much.

Most of what you wrote made sense but seriously fuck mATX for anything other than saving a bit of space.
