I'm confident that the disaster that was SPM is what inspired Miyamoto to reign in IS and tell them to use Mario characters. I could not give less of a fuck about the love life of a butterfly made out of rainbow-coloured triangles.

A game that was almost good is a good sign and a bad sign.
It means the people making it were perfectly capable of doing it. It also means there was a reason it pulled a u turn and that reason will probably show up again seeing as the ratings aren't too bad on it.

Yeah, I've got to agree with this. Even though TTYD is my favorite game, I think 64 handled it the best.
I don't know why they bothered giving the pixels any personality during their intro so that they never speak again. I realized that it's because Tippi does most of the talking, but surely they could of written up a few more lines for them to make them more three dimensional.

I actually like how the Mario & Luigi series keep changing the format a little with every game. Keeps things fresh.
The tutorials are hell though, especially when you're playing through the game again.
I enjoy Brawl because of the larger cast than melee and some that didn't make it to Smash 4. If I was able to enjoy SPM with different characters, maybe it would be enjoyable, but no, I have to switch to Mario every other screen to gain access to some incredibly obvious door or enemy. You spend so much more time than you should flipping through some stupid menu. It drives me nuts.
Well Earthbound got a fangame I don't see why PM can't.
We'll see HalfLife 3 before a new PM game gets released.

Super paper mario is actually pretty good and the only thing is that everyone hates it because it is too vastly different and it went for a completely different gameplay style than the previous games.

Actually with the amount of writing and art assets a full-size Paper Mario game would require is monumental- designing a working battle system and such is trivial in comparison
Oh come on, you hardly have to animate anyone frame by frame, most of it is tweening.
I've talked to programmers and they've all told me making a 3D engine is a complete whore to do.
I was surprisingly disappointed with BiS for the 2D platforming, which carried over 100% into Dream Team, which I loved for my first playthrough but now strongly dislike for its insane, insulting tutorials and excruciatingly stupid minigame combat.
I haven't played PiT in years, so I can't really comment on that one.
I personally think that SS is the only one that holds up to PM or TTYD besides maybe PiT. I think that BiS is probably objectively just as good, though, and I certainly do enjoy it on a lot of levels.
Maybe you should get a good writer first so you don't get things like "MUSTARD OF DOOM" "KING OF GUYS WHO TALK TO POSTERS" "NYARGLEBARGLE" or another character like Count Bleck
Well, it was more like... several properly layered characters and a working replica of the 2D tweening animation system
We actually had all that shit done, fuck you could probably actually make the game with what we had finished, but the sheer fucking... god, there was SO MUCH art to do, and I'm a shitty neet who's whole motivation for living consists of being able to sustain an erection long enough to scribble something on my tablet

Paper Mario, 64 and TTYD are simply way too good, the only M&L game that comes close is Superstar Saga.
While the M&L RPGs havent had a bad game and have been steady unlike the PM series, 64 and TTYD are just way too good

I liked SPM the same way I liked Nuts & Bolts, I knew about everything that was changed in the game before going into it and I expected a different game than the ones I loved, and I didn't buy it day one.
I luckily wasn't there when people were being promised Banjo Threeie and got Nuts & Bolts, but I legitimately enjoyed the game.
Same with SPM, but I understand why everyone else is so pissed off.

There are a million issues with the game, it's an absolute gold mine of bad decisions, and you guys pick the fucking emphasis on paper?
It's just you attributing the other bad design decisions of the game to a completely unrelated aspect of it. If SS was as good as TTYD, shoot, half as good as TTYD, but still kept the emphasis on paper, nobody would give a fuck.

Which is emblematic of the problem with Nintendo today. A game can't just be a game, it has to "innovate." Hardware can't just be hardware, it has to "innovate."

This isn't new. Nintendo has always tried to innovate. Sometimes it turns out good, sometimes not, usually it's both. But this definitely isn't something new.
It just seems so much worse now, particularly with the 3DS and the Wii U. You can't just have a more powerful DS to succeed the DS, you have to give it a 3D gimmick that adds very little yet takes up an enormous amount of R&D money and system power. You can't just have a reasonably powerful console to succeed the Wii so that games like Bayonetta and W101 and the Xenoblade sequel can run at a fucking stable framerate while looking good, you NEED another gimmick controller that again sucks up R&D money that could've been spent beefing the console up.

Yeah, that's why LogBox was a cramped vertical tower that still focused more on simple driving at the bottom than flying to the top or why the Terrarium of Terror, despite having so many twists and turns in the environment/landscape, was nearly pure aerial missions.

Superstar Saga is one of my favorite games ever, but PiT and DT are pretty bad and BiS is only decent.
PM Has the first 2 games being AMAZING, SPM only being disappointing but not horrible, and SS making me vomit

To clarify, I'm not trying to be an asshole about this, but having multiple people that can code is crucial. I know a bunch of guys that got completely obliterated during the Global Game Jam because they had one guy that could code and like seven artists and the guy jumped ship after they had spent half a day making assets. It's just something that's too important to gloss over.
Leave some contact info here if your interested in helping out. Were currently trying to fill all the jobs needed to actually get this thing of the ground. Right now we are working on cleaning up our engine and getting mechanics and partners situated until we have a solid crew to work on this.
