The perfect length for a videogame is about 90 minutes. And that should be all cutscenes, there's really no need to have any buttons to press to advance the story. i don't want to have to do the action bits, I would prefer to just watch them being acted out instead. And instead of releasing it for a console, they could play it in the cinema instead so me and my partner can make a night out of it and watch it on a big screen.

Short games are fine if they offer replay value.

I think there's a place for everything. Sometimes i want a long experience, with the original Deus Ex for instance, which i put about 40 hours in, when i finally stopped playing it i felt bad, i was so used to the universe and the characters, and now they were gone from my routine.
And sometimes i just want a short game to distract me, like Binary Domain, or any other indie game that is clogging my library.
Of course, i didn't paid 60 dollars for BD, nor would i for those indie games.

I don't mind shorter games, but I'd like if the prices reflected the content. 60 dollars being consistent across the board makes little sense given the vast disparity between playtime available to people through different titles. I don't mind paying full price for Skyrim, AC, Dark Souls, or something else which promises lots of main and side content. But The Order, and games similar to it, shouldn't be more than 40 at most.

I remember the PS2 had games like this. It was so satisfying picking up a new Ratchet or Jak game for 40 dollars, knowing you were getting a better game than its neighbors on the shelf, and for 10 dollars less.

Let's be honest with ourselves for a minute, /v/. This is, what I'm guessing, the industry would like. Movies are inclusive, and the amount of time it takes to produce and QA a 2-3 hour game versus a 30-40 hour game is probably much lower. From a business standpoint, they're probably looking at it as time they could spend making/producing multiple 2-3 hour games in the same time span, all while courting more of the mainstream audience. It's all absolutely disgusting and cancerous, but I can honestly see the writing of the wall. The only way to combat this shit realistically is to not buy those products, and be extremely vocal about why you're not. Finances speak louder than anything to investors and stockholders. If gamers turn their noses up to this shit, they'll stop doing it. Same deal with Evolve. It's already happening in the music industry, with album sales being bottom tier in 2014, with only Taylor Swift having a platinum album last year. We need to do the same to the game companies.

Most of the time, people use game length as a general metric for the amount of content in a game, but game length has nothing to do with how much content is in a game. You could have a JRPG with 5 hours of content but 35 hours of grinding. Is that game worth a full 60? Probably not.

I'm not saying Order 1886 is a good game, there are TONS of problems with it, of which the length is probably number 997 on the thousand-item list.

Framerate and resolution are only relevant in two situations:

1: A new console generation is coming and better visuals are the only thing you can sell your console on. Sony, Microsoft and all the journos wouldn't shut up about how important framerate and resolution were until the new consoles actually came out and turned out to be shit.
2: You're re-releasing a game on a more powerful console less than a year later, it's a lazy re-release and the only thing you can sell it on is higher resolution and framerate. Framerate didn't matter for Uncharted or The Last of Us, but it mattered for The Last of Us Remastered and it will matter for the inevitable Uncharted Trilogy Remasterd. But it won't matter for Uncharted 4.

Likewise, as games become shorter and less interesting, journos decide to prioritize those "features" as the best gaming has to offer.

There's no interactivity in the actual GAME, sonyshills.

It's half cutscenes, a quarter cutscenes with QTEs, 20% walking around cinematically, and 10% of the most snore worthy TPS cover shooting battles where enemies never leave cover.

Oh, and there's zero music (srs) and the story takes itself WAYYYY too seriously for it to be about half breed werewolves.

It is seriously the saddest attempt at a "game" in quite awhile.

I went in expecting a complete clusterfuck and got a low production quality but otherwise stellar game with a few problems. An interesting story and an intriguing set of characters. It was also neat that the dub characters were largely different from the original jap, but the writing for each was internally consistent.

I don't really mind how short the game is, I just mind how there's only like sub 3 hours of gameplay for a full price game.

Portal 1 was like 4 hours of gameplay and it came with TF2, and the whole Half Life 2 series for less than full price.

I'm ok with short games. Long games usually are long just because of filler. Since I'm a wageslave I don't have a lot of time to play, so I'd rather play a short game than a very long one that will just bore me in the long run if I have to drag it over several weeks.

My ideal lenght for a game nowdays is 8 hours for a single playthrough. Still, The Order is way too short even for my taste. I could easily finish it in a single saturday, and if it doesn't have any replay value that's a big issue.

Maybe I'll rent it if the story is really good (at least as good as TLOU, I liked the story in that game, and by the way, it lasted me 14 hours first playthrough), otherwise I'll pass.

i fully support short games. at an adequate price.

way better than copypasting the same enemies over and over to turn 6 hard hours of game into 24.

however when we think about that we have to remember that adding 18 hours costed only 10% of the game budget, so it wouldn't be fair to demand that the 6h game should cost 1/4th of the 24h one.

i don't play games by hours and i don't think enjoyment is measured in hours.
