how come oblivion, being the much older game, had better cities than skyrim?

Oblivion is the best TES game, hands down.

And here's the reasons why, in order of importance, the first being more important than the last:

1 - 90% of 1337/pro/elite gamerz hate Oblivion with a passion, and is fun to like it just to piss those losers. This is the first and foremost reason.
2 - a lot of Morrowind 1337 fanboys like Skyrim more than Oblivion. They bashed Oblivion so much that is automatic to like Oblivion more than Skyrim when one of them appear on a discussion with their standard "Morrowind > xxx > xxx". Go play roguelikes bunch of sociopath fuckheads.
3 - Oblivion have a lot of retarded (I said retarded, not dumbed-down) and fun characters, and is very colorful and at the same time western. Nowadays only anime-based shit games can be colorful, western-based games need to have psychopathic 'dark' atmosphere, full of psychopaths and 'dark' characters obsessed with violence and pain. When you like Oblivion you go against the current game fashion that says that "western=psychopath, eastern=colorful", and in this you piss-off both CoD fans and weeboos.
4 - Oblivion have better side-quests, have spellcraft, is more easy to mod, and the general atmosphere is more inviting. Your actions have consequences in the world around you, and the combat dont suck like in Morrowind.

Oblivion is the best game ever made and anyone who disagree is a troll, a 1337 pussy, a CoD fanboy or a weeboo.

They werent though and the idea behind them "have a little flavor of each neighboring zone" is dumb. It would of been better if they focused more on the setting of the empire and incorporated more roman and Chinese aspects. It didn't help that huge cities only had about three quests each.

>>
Are there any mods that add a shit ton of RNG npcs and bigger cities?
>>
>>283508759
yes
>>
>>283507648
If Solitude, Whiterun, Windhelm and Riften were each as big as the Imperial City in Oblivion, and the minor towns were the size of those four in the base game, I'd have no problems with the scale of the cities.
>>283508759
In Skyrim? Interesting NPCs, Immersive Roads and Patrols, Inconsequential NPCs, Expanded Towns and Cities/JK's Skyrim/Dawn of Skyrim series.
There's a ton of them. Most are incomplete though.
>>
>>283508759

Better Cities makes all the cities bigger and adds a lot of NPCs, but not "a shit ton". But 25-50% bigger. The imperial city becomes particularly more robust

>>
>>283509170
There's a handful of mods that let you play instruments. I think one of the mod authors said that the scripts to get the player to play an instrument were already in the game, he just had to activate them. So Bethesda set the animations up and everything, and left it.
This is ontop of the mod "cutting room floor' which puts back in a bunch of cut misc. quests that were just missing a couple bug fixes or scripts to get working properly.
Bethesda left this game so unfinished it's hilarious.
>>
it is simple really, oblivion takes place on imperial grounds. they are more civilised and rich so their cities look better.
skyrim is nord territory plagued by war and dragons. not much to build leisurely while dragons roast people.
>>
>>283509389
Doesn't explain why all of Skyrim has a population of about 200.

>>
>>283509170
Everything in Skyrim ends up being "go bring this thing to that person"
>>
number of npcs is small in both games. technical limitations of the platforms the games are designed for I guess. remember how every major building has a loading screen(not sure if same applies to houses, it did for oblivion and as for skyrim I did not play it for long enough to see, the reason being animations progress is really stale since they are no different than oblivion's).
even worse is the fact of the horribly small diversity of dialogues choices. feels like you talk to robots.
>>
>>283509170
All the guilds in Skyrim are shit because they all involve just running around talking to people, or going into dungeons.

>Thieves guild
>only first quest actually has you stealing shit (taking something from one box and putting in the pocket of someone else)
>Every single other quest is going to speak to people, or going through dungeons killing mobs.
>Not a single quest that has anything to do with actual thieving.

Oblivion wasn't much better, but at least the Dark Brotherhood is very memorable, while Skyrim has no memorable guilds whatsoever.

oblivion had a fighters' guild quest. you had to kill some baddies. turns out you were under the influence of some drug which made you see harmless civilians as monsters. was fun, still remember it.
>>
>>283509663

The strength of Bethesda's gamebryo engine is that it dynamically runs script and AI checks with npcs, so they don't have to manually script anything, this allows for easier content generation and a more "lively" feel to the game, because everything can be done using relatively minor in engine commands. (For example, the way that faction membership, personal disposition, and multiple kinds of magic affect whether a person is hostile are all managed through a single target stat). It also allows for neat interactions like different groups of npcs automatically knowing to fight eachother regardless of the context.

The trouble is, that this incurs geometrically increasing computation costs with increasing number of entities. Having a dozen npcs loaded might be manageable to a 7th gen console, but having 2 dozen would require much more than double that same amount of processing power, because each additionally loaded actor must script check against all the other currently loaded ones.
>>
>>283509825
I loved that mansion heist at the beginning of the Thieves Guild, it's actually possible (and fun) to sneak through the entire thing not killing anybody. The issue is you don't have to do that because the enemies in Skyrim are so piss easy.
Here I thought the rest of the quest would be like that. Nope.
Thieves Guild is still the best of the three base game guilds, though.

>Easier to mod

Haha fuck off, my Oblivion was a complete clusterfuck that crashed all the goddamn time, I had to disable most of the mods I wanted because they never worked. Barely any of the popular mods are compatible with each other, whereas my Skyrim had over 500 mods if you count texture packs installed and ran flawlessly. If i ever crashed the problem would be easy to find and fix and would usually be my fault. Not to mention the countless different mod managers for Skyrim, Oblivion you choose from what, two?
>>
>>283510106

Name another game where attacking a guard will result in npcs individually fleeing, fighting you, or fighting the guards based on personal stats and disposition, factions, and global factors.
>>
>>283510115
>Oblivion you choose from what, two?
>needs more than OBMM and Wrye Bash to function
Yeah you do seem like someone would would prefer Skyrim.
>>
>>283509948

Despite the overall Skyrim vs Oblivion argument, I think it's pretty much inarguable that Oblivion had far better (and memorable) quests.

>step inside a painting to kill imaginary trolls
>murder mystery quest set in a house where you have to sneak around and kill your target
>get stuck inside a nightmare and have to go through trials to get out
>invisible village
>hist tree hallucination shit
>ghost boats

>>
>>283510115

I think he means easier to make mods.

Also, getting oblivion mods to work together is a matter of installing patches it they need it, and then getting the load order right (which can usually be done automatically via BOSS). It's not hard at all

I don't understand. Yes, the cities were comfy and all. But they all looked pretty much the same. Same architecture. Compare that to Skyrim or Morrowind where they all had a distinct look. In fact that was one of my complaints with Morrowind, the cities themselves didn't have enough separate from each other.

Well, to be fair, certain buildings in Skyrim cities look the same as each other, and each town in Oblivion also had their own distinct looks (despite all of them having the same exact cathedral and certain other buildings). Certainly not on a level of Markarth, or Vivec, but they didn't all use the same architecture.

What defines a better city? More houses? More inaccessible houses? More empty houses that have nothing to do in them aside from stealing shit from NPCs with no relevant dialog/story?

I do not approve of Skyrims cities, but lots of empty space (even if its filled with furniture) doesn't make a city good.
>>

>>
I thought Oblivion's cities were worse, at least Skyrim had a little variety.

However, they were small as fuck.
>>
>>283510285
While I think that the engine is more updated and stable and better looking in Skyrim than Oblivion, I have to agree with this here.

Skyrims writing, quests, NPCs etc etc just feel lazy, it's like they decided to go all in with engine upgrades and better models and graphics, but it came at the cost of everything else.

I have to give props to modders though, while rare, there are a handful of quests (even voice acted) the shit over anything in vanilla Skyrim, also some of the newer followers just shit over everything Bethesda has put into their games.

Whoever wrote and programmed Inigo, should be hired by Bethesda.

>>
>>283510460
They need to do something original with the lore.
I think they should industrialize the setting and give us a magic/technology setting. I think that could be really cool with the way the world is already set up.
I mean, ffs the Dwemer ruins have been around for 2000 years at this point, with thousands of mages and scholars studying them, and we don't even have a lightbulb yet?

It should look like a fucking city. Look at Spider-Man 2. It's set in New York. The vast majority of the buildings are non-interactible but it feels like a giant city. Contrast Seattle in Second Son. It's tiny as fuck for a major city with only a handful of distinct areas.

I got inducted into the guild and went and promptly forgot about the whole "hey go find these three instruments or something because that'll make us better musicians or whatever"
>>
>>283506136
Because it's an older game, and thus it was simpler to add and individualize content.

Nowadays you need a specialized engine from an external subcontractor for everything. There are companies that thrive on providing nothing but a positional audio engine. Not a full audio engine, only the component that allows for 3D positional sound.

If you want to add anything in a modern game, you have to coordinate dozens of programming elements that you didn't write, so when your unique townhouse model gets rejected for the fifth time because FlexFormTwaddlecockRendering Inc. just informed you that their proprietary Cobblestone Bumpmapping layer you're using doesn't allow for what you've planned, you say fuck it and make a capital city out of six copy/pasted huts.

No, because that becomes a non issue like an hour into the game

I'm talking about the "both parties stand there and exchange numbers until one of them falls over". There's absolutely no mechanical nuance to the game, especially when the button to use the best attack is always the best option. You literally just have to make sure the enemy is dying more quickly than you are.

Oblivion's combat was greatly improved in that spacing and mobility actually mattered, and you had to manually block and could manually dodge. Too bad it was still pretty shitty combat and that the game dropped the ball in a bunch of completely different areas.

Like sure, you decided to go dungeon crawling despite having been told that a village is for sure getting attacked and razed by a warparty from the stormloaks soon. Now that village is razed and the villagers dead, nicely prioritized "hero".

I'm not even talking about that dodge rolling thing, but because animations for big weapons or power attacks actually took a significant fraction of a second, if you were quick, you could just manually get out of range, then dive back in after the attack.
>>
>>283512239

Except no.

People complain about the combat, but the combat in TES is >always< shit. Morrowind is just more dice rolling instead of trying to be some shitty real time action game.

Morrowind is the only one with actual depth because it has enough content to make the world seem believable, Like 15 joinable factions that actually come with consequences for joining and don't just have 5 quests then you're archmage mega awesome supreme.

Equipment is the biggest offender though.

Morrowind: Clothes under armor, seperate shoulder pads, seperate gloves, helmet, cuirass, greaves, boots, belts, cloaks etc etc.

Oblivion: Boots, greaves, cuirass, helmet, gloves, no more. Cloaks take up several slots, retarded.

Skyrim: Body, boots, helmet, gloves.

The elder scrolls literally removes more features than it adds with every installment.

TES Arena had some sweet ass combat

i was playing it on dosbox when i got the elder scrolls anthology.

I also proudly made my way through the first dungeon with only a few rolls. which apparently isn't common
>Another notable fact about Arena is that it has a tendency to be unforgiving towards newer players. It is easy to die in the starting dungeon, as powerful enemies can be encountered if the player lingers too long. However, this effect slowly withers away as the player becomes more powerful and more aware of the threats that loom everywhere. Even Ken Rolston, lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, says he started the game at least twenty times and only got out of the beginning dungeon once.

Not that guy, but I played TESO and its fucking awful. It controls like ass and does everything half-assed because it wants to be an MMO first instead of a TES game, which is why most of the lore was thrown out the window so that they can try to be more Tolkien. Does TESO have good lore? Most of it is shit. There are very tiny sprinkles of good, but that is like putting a light dab of salt on a pile of shit. Very fucking laggy as well. PvP was awful.

TES was never meant to be a multiplayer game, especially not an MMO. Todd Howard might be a liar, but he had the right god damn idea when he said TES is a single-player experience only.

I was just talking to a friend about this

here's my take:

>Morrowind
near perfection, we've both played it for hundreds if not thousands of hours and we play more almost yearly. The size, creativity, and attention to detail is unmatched. One of the best games ever made, bar none. Perfect levels of complexity and jankiness.

>Oblivion
I've played hundreds of hours of this one too. Oh fuck I loved this one like a decade ago. But unlike Morrowind I have absolutely no desire to go back. It's like a game made by a computer. Bland story, bland world, bland caves, bland graffix, bland fucking everything. Some quests are pretty good but Oblivion just lacks a soul. It's extremely hard for me to handle playing this game now

>Skyrim
My feelings go back and forth on this one. This one was extremely fun for the first couple of hours. Like the first 30 hours I had with Skyrim were some of the most fun I've ever had with a game, I was so fucking immersed. however after that initial period, the game falls apart. A complete lack of attention to detail, boring ass quests, shit story, "cool shit" like kill cams makes the game feel more cinematic and less free, over all less content.

Skyrim is better than Oblivion but Morrowind is still the best.

I agree the city looks great, and if it where any other city then it would have been fine, but since it's supposed to be the capital which was hyped up to be a gigantic city in lore it was bound to fall flat. They could have done something like the Tribunal exp in morrowind which I think would have worked much better

my only REAL problem with skyrim; ignoring the perks and bastardization of the level/skill system AND ignoring the utter destruction of the gear/item selection AND ignoring the fact
there's no unique placed artifacts in dungeons.

No, the only REAL problem; the fucking books. RUINED BOOKS. I don't remember finding books that i can't read in morrowind or oblivion. WHY THE FUCK are the books "ruined"

half the items in skyrim are just worthless junk thrown in for whoever the fuck knows. it's like an autistic kid with a level creator just went apeshit with the spawner

You're damn right I did. I used to explore that shit in full desert robes with the desert hat as a level 30, living off of nothing but those waterskins and the occasional cactus. I'm pretty sure you only find ruined books in dungeons. Why would they be readable if they've been sitting in a dank old tomb or something? It's not like there weren't plenty of books you could read, even in dungeons.
>>
>>283515331

Exactly, Skyrim is completely indicative of what's wrong with modern gaming.

The game has the depth of a puddle, they put all their time and effort making it look great at first glance, and amazing for normies who'd never really dig into it but terrible for anyone with half a brain. The game completely falls apart under the slightest modicum of scrutiny.

The setting was restrictive. Not just because "muh snowy mountains" but in terms of the cultures they're analogizing, there's just more variety you can do with a European mythos than a Norse one if you want to keep it grounded. >tfw skyrim played like a streamlined first person shooter with magic and dragons

fun for the first few playthroughs - but once you've "done" everything - there's nothing left.

i've been playing morrowind since it came OUT and there's still content i haven't' fully explored (though i'm very close to what i would consider 100% completion)

The only thing I haven't "done" is complete all the miscellaneous quest; which is actually a key problem with Morrowind - the vanilla quest journal becomes literally daunting at the end-game with tons of entries. To scroll through my journal and find specific entries would take ACTUAL hours - so it makes it very hard to find what quest i have and haven't actually completed.

I can almost guarantee it. This is Bethesda we're talking about and "survival" games are the biggest, plebest, cash-cow right now. It's almost an inevitability that the next game will have that shit shoehorned in.

At worst, it'll be basically NV's hard core mode and at best the whole game will be built around it. I honestly don't have a problem with that unless they also try to add in building shit.

Imagine this shit in a Black Marsh game though:

>end game you've seen and done almost everything
>only one place remains
>Like the Blackreach of this game
>a lone, dead Ayleid city in the deepest, most dangerous part of Argonia
>massive tracts of in hospitable land separate it from any other settlements
>filled with poison, no food, no potable water, no place to set up camp, and of course filled with dangerous monsters and Naga cultists or some shit
>The trek can only be accomplished if you're extremely prepared
>after days of trekking you finally reach it
>Ye'hezt-Xgi, The Dead City (I don't know fuck you let me be autistic)
>toughest dungeon in the game filled with awesome loot and unique shit
>you reach the end
>you kill a dragon and get the best dragon-shout in the game ;^)
>>
>>283516065
Because the games got progressively worse starting at Oblivion

>Arena was the beginning, but a rocky start and commercially unsuccessful
>Daggerfall greatly improved upon, but wasn't yet what it could be
>Morrowind was greatness. The peak. The pinnacle of the elder scrolls series
>Oblivion was a change from Morrowind. Fans seen this as making it more casual by removing skills and making the game shorter with less content. Though a good game in itself, great even, but many agree that it didn't quite live up to its predecessor.
>Skyrim. Skyrim. Amazing detailed graphics and interactive NPCs, immersing and varied landscapes and unscripted dragons. Skills to create armor and weapons, "infinite quest". Giants roam the land. You can even get married. All this hype, promise; but it ended up being shallow. A fun game, but it isn't what the FANS wanted. It's what the general audience wanted.

New Vegas
TESO or Morrowind

Bethesda makes games their TES games like fallout 3 when they should instead make them more like NV.

>smaller but more open and interesting worlds
>heavy attention to detail
>if they must have companions make them good and add a companion wheel
>make every play style unique and viable
>more options in quests and way to finish them

It's kind of a null argument considering NV is actually bigger than 3 while featuring all that I've mentioned despite the fact that Obsidian has less people, time, and resources to make it than Bethesda did with 3. When it comes down to it Bethesda is just lazy and doesn't give a shit.

I miss how Morrowind quest mods would fit perfectly into the vanilla game because of the lack of voice acting in the dialogue. In Oblivion and Skyrim, user-made quests with dialogue are completely out-of-place.

I've actually been wanting, for a while, to attempt to do a complete overhaul of Skyrim's dialogue, with expanded dialogue options and directions, (Directions being especially important) but I don't know if I have the writing skill or the modding knowledge required. Only thing I've got is the motivation.

Skyrim and oblivion are much less immersive than morrowind, purely because they try to be more immersive, but don't have the technology or resources to do it and their worlds come off feeling fake.
People just standing around is much more immersive than people walking past you dropping canned comments about mudcrabs or explaining their life story/unique character opinion uninvited if you walk too close to them.

Skyrim was meant to be nordic and have small villages for fishing and hunting with a capital city. It was supposed to feel isolated and travel worthy, cold and lonely and I feel that they got that right tin Skyrim.

Oblivion was obviously meant as a more medieval setting with huge cities and people expecting their king to protect them from the dangerous outdoors. All cities look thte same because it was under one rule and they were all merged under one banner which led for a fast expansion.

In Skyrim, there's different stances on who should be the king, who should be Jarl and it leads to people having powerless lives with no banner to bleed for. It halted expanding and people live comfortably in their snow peak mountain villages.

>exit crappy Megaton

I played New Vegas and then 3 afterwards. I enjoyed it, but returning to FO3 after so long and having played New Vegas even more it's barely tolerable. I handled many more crashes with NV and it's still the significantly more entertaining game. 3 is just so empty.

Oblivion had much more going for it and to this day I still think Oblivion is by far the best game they've released so far and here's why.

Oblivion had a much wider array of skills,
If you played Morrowind, some of you had been pissed off to find that levitate and lock/unlock door, and many other spells/ skills missing from Oblivion.

Then they take a load of the beautiful meshes and completely redo them to look like a even more exaggerated fantasy game.

Oblivion tried to be semi realistic and inviting so people would want to play it, it had a happy environment, but also darker sides which made it an enjoyable transition.

You play Skyrim, you say Fuck off snow.

Skyrim takes that even further, inferring that all of us are retarded and only need "better" graphics and dumbed down gameplay to keep us going.

Unfortunately it's starting to look more and more like Bethesda is hiding behind game titles.
>>
>>283523414

Text based dialog allowed for more characterization for more characters
>>
>>283524297
Skyrim had objectively deeper gameplay then oblivion because it didn't pretend to be an RPG when it was an action game like Oblivion did.

The removal of the attribute system allowed far more customization then oblivion did because everything was no longer tied to just 7-8 stats, and isntead, each individual thing of those stats became its own skill/perk separate from each other.

>You play Skyrim, you say Fuck off snow.
Funny, because less then half of Skyrim's playble game space is snow

I actually recall more of that seemingly endless forest in Oblivion then snow in Skyrim.

You literally cant reach that unless you willingly exploit the game to reach a +1000000000 damage sword, or turn the game on the easier difficulty setting, and you could do literally the exact same shit in oblivion.
>>

>>
>>283524536

Yes, you might like to think that removing that entire RPG like system could have benefited the game, but that also destroyed a lot of different unique situations in the game where different statistics like that may be important.

If you remember oblivion, when you accomplished something it felt much more amusing to you because those same RPG systems they had gave you a lot of different things you could do, for example strength was tied directly to your damage, from what I can remember at least. Now there's not even a hand-to-hand skill at all, a lot of people enjoyed being able to beat the living hell out of things with only their hands, as well as the depth of the dark brotherhood and the much more ominous feel of the black door in the basement, in city's name I can't remember.

It's widely acknowledged that the RPG elements of Oblivion are a flop. The game faithfully delivers all the most boring features of RPGs — the inventory micromanagement, the lugging stuff to the nearest shop, the recharging, reloading and repairing — while failing to deliver any of the fun. The experience system is bizarrely broken, to the extent that levelling up is really bad news. There's no real reward for exploring any of Oblivion's identikit dungeons: the loot is mostly junk, and even the one-off special artefacts are no match for the generic ones you can make yourself. The fights — mostly one-on-one encounters — are boring; no tactical interest, just whack it again and again. Oblivion is one of long line of titles trying to verify the hypothesis that first-person melee combat doesn't work, a hypothesis which has now surely been established as one of the laws of gaming.

Like Burger King, Oblivion gives the customer plenty of options to create a personalised experience — you can play as a sneak, a fighter, a wizard, a vampire, or any combination of the above — and like Burger King, the experience ends up being pretty much the same, no matter what you choose. This is what happens when you construct your gameplay from such bland, low-quality, generic ingredients. In providing this variety of options, the designers of Oblivion were no doubt hoping to summon the holy spectre of "emergent gameplay"; but as always, the spectre fails to grace us with an appearance, and only makes its presence felt indirectly, though a large number of bugs and exploits.
>>
>>283525520

If it's exactly the same thing being done where's luck at?

If you ever remember that asshole woodelf in morrowind with some ridiculous amount of luck, he would tell you to give him rediculously large sums of money and when you can't give it to him anymore he has a fit, storms off, and then weeks later if you go to the same place in mournhold he will be there in full ebony armour and hack you to pieces unless you had a spell to reduce his luck, which increases his evasion.

Also. Skooma actually had a purpose in oblivion and morrowind, and gave birth to a taboo that actually had meaning, whereas skyrim dropped that down the toilet.

>>283525875
Skyrim teaches kids that drugs are cool. +25 stamina! Uh, great.

>>
>>283525875
Luck only worked in Morrowind because it had a RNG based hit chance, which doesn't make any sense.

So obviously, with the removal of RNG system, an attribute whose sole purpose is to effect RNGs wouldn't exist anymore in any useful way.

Oblivion is probably the least enjoyable TES game to play besides Arena, I would honestly rather play fucking Battlespire, Daggerfall, or Redguard then Oblivion.
>>
>>283526202

OH lol, yeah them, aw.. :c I just realized, I thought the drinking animation they did was pretty cool even if it was pretty ghetto, and how mages at the guilds would be animated doing something as well, now for skyrim it's just mostly idle animations, like reading a book or bending over an enchanting table..
>>
>>283526921
They also eat and drink in skyrim. Skyrim actually has a ton of animations for idling, like leaning on shit and talking, but they made people go to reading or crafting first, which is really weird.
>>
>>283526620

At every degree if you actually appreciated the soul of the serious, went back and played morrowind, oblivion AND then skyrim I'm sure you would feel unsatisfied with the way you feel about it, a lot is missing from skyrim, but I can see how "simplifying" it might be to your taste. And being semi-realistic doesn't make it lotr.

But bethesda knows it would destroy the series for about 98% of the playerbase, so they stick to the generic fantasy lore.
>>
You faggots make me want to play Oblivion again, even though I know I will just spend hours modding and minutes playing. Are there any mods that change the leveling and stat system, because I remember really hating it in the original game.
>>
>>283510512

Bethesda's obsession with making every single part of the game "relevant" is, ironically, the reason why the last two elder scrolls games have felt so lazy. It's simply not possible to create massive cities with large populations if you have to give every a house a purpose and every npc unique, voice-acted dialogue options. And because Bethesda refuses to compromise on this, you end up with tiny cities with no npcs, since if they can't give something a purpose they won't put it in the game.

Elder Scrolls games would feel a lot more "grand" if Bethesda would add in a bunch of npcs and buildings with no purpose other than to be regular people living in the world. Does some random villager really need his own unique quest line? No, but that doesn't mean he can't be used to make the game world seem bigger and more alive. Imagine how much bigger Skyrim would feel if they kept the same number of quests and unique npcs, but added a ton of generic npcs and houses on top of that.
>>
>>283506136
BEcause the devs were passionate then. Once you've exhausted ideas from mediocre devs they can't adapt to situations, could designers can always come up with new stuff.
>>
>>283528909
>Elder Scrolls games would feel a lot more "grand" if Bethesda would add in a bunch of npcs and buildings with no purpose other than to be regular people living in the world.

thats would be boring and shit. GTa and Assassins creed do this and it only makes their cities feel even more fake then TEs ones because everything is so obviously a cardboard cutout you cant interact with.
>>
Bethesda games are made for loli mods. I have to force myself through all the shitty gameplay just to enjoy loli butt.
>>
>>283528198
>Are there any mods that change the leveling and stat system, because I remember really hating it in the original game.
There's a huge amount. It's one of the most frequently modded mechanics of the game. If you want to scrap the system entirely and go to a more streamlined, traditional RPG leveling system then you want Oblivion XP. If you want to keep skill-based leveling and attributes but fix Oblivion's shitty anti-RP take on it, use nGCD or Realistic Leveling for levels and Progress for skills. I prefer the latter approach, but XP is more popular from what I can tell.

That said, the stat system is really only a huge issue when combined with Oblivion's level scaling. Since efficient leveling mandates the opposite of roleplaying by avoiding using your primary skills, playing it "normally" means all your enemies level up more frequently while your attributes and skills grow at less than optimal rates. If you just fix the level-scaling with a mod like OOO or Francesco's Leveled Creatures and Items, then even the vanilla system is playable.

Of course, it's even better to change both leveling and level-scaling, but just one or the other will do if you want to avoid spending too much time modding or don't want to play with the massive world-changing overhauls that address level scaling.

Sorry to break this to you, but Skyrim is actually Oblivion with a bunch of stolen mods from TESNexus. Every little idea you saw in Skyrim, from better environments to riding dragons, to flowers that disappear when you forage them, to book cases that align your books, to even the companions you liked in skyrim...

All of that was mods for Oblivion, downloadable from TESNexus 5 years earlier. As a matter of fact, a guy who put together mod packs, his most famous one being Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) was hired by Bethesda to help with Skyrim.

There are plenty of mods that fixes the suck out of Oblivion. Removing level and quest rewards scaling, tweaking the attribute system, no more potato faces, harder combat that consists on improved AI, dodging and tactics rather than increasing damage and HP, improved map where you can draw locations you've already visited, etc.

Fully modded Oblivion is actually fucking great. I never knew this game had so much fun quests. Little quests given by random villagers are more memorable than big quests given by anybody on Skyirm.
>>
>>283529048

there's an in-between, though. Yeah, if theu tried to make every town in oblivion liberty city, it would feel boring and empty. That doesn't mean they can't use some of rockstar's strategies to make the cities feel bigger and more lived in without taking it to the opposite extreme.

Honestly, the only shit aspect on Morrowind (which sadly, no mod i've ever seen was able to fix) was the combat.

Yes, i understand how the combat works. I need to be skilled in a certain proficiency, and have enough stamina to land my hits. But that sort of combat just doesn't transitions well into a FPS game. It's great for an isometric, turn-based RPG, but simply bad for a game like Morrowind. It's pretty silly that you visually landed a sword on somebody's face, but you missed it thanks to stats. It just doesn't works well in a FPS.

You have this amazing RPG with a shitload of content, good quests, writing, that you cannot be arsed to play because the combat just turns you off completely.
>>
>>283535835
Unlike Skyrim, which is still shit, even after thoroughly modding it. It could also be because the Skyrim modding scene is relatively young compared to Oblivion, but I believe Skyrim's core is too shit to fix.
>>
>>283537949
Skyrim's core is so fucking bad not even the best modders can fix it. You can somehow improve the gameplay, enhance the combat, remove level scaling, fix bugs, add better textures and etcetera.

But the writing, plot and quests are still a big pile of shit with the sole exception of one or two quests, which are only average in comparison to Oblivion/Morrowind. No sufficient ammount of modding can fix what is fundamentally broken.

Skyrim is a bad RPG, and mods will turn it into a great adventuring game, at most. But no matter what, it will still be a terrible RPG.
>>
>>283538616
>But the writing, plot and quests are still a big pile of shit with the sole exception of one or two quests, which are only average in comparison to Oblivion/Morrowind
Morrowind quests were the worst of the three games because they were just one off fetch quests that didn't have some greater story.

Oblivion's quests sucked because they tired to be way too rule of cool all the time that nothing felt believable.

skyrim had neither of those problems, it had a good amount of just basic everyday shit, while also keeping stuff like the Daedric quests more complex so thees both combined narratives, but not everything is some dumb conspiracy.

There's more than that. The base leveling mechanics are obnoxious, requiring you to avoid certain actions until you want to level in their related stat. Writing is extensive, but getting information about something is dry Wikipedia topic links - rarely do NPCs have an opinion or phrasing that's different than their neighbours.
>>

that pic is also wrong because Skyrim dungeons loop back, they dont just end.

>Applies even more to Skyrim
Not at all, as each of the five major cities had wholly unique architectural styles based on their locations.

>Overworld in Skyrim is extremely sparse and practically barren. Boring as shit.
Its slightly smaller, and has more locations in it then oblivion, and on top of that, each of the 9 hols has its own unique geography, whereas Oblivion had coast, forest, and mountains

>Quests in Skyrim had almost no variation. 80% of them were either go to cave, kill thing/acquire item, or go to place, talk to person.
All quests in RPGs can be boiled down to fetch, fed-ex, or escort missions. That isn't what was being said, and you know it.

> did skyrim even have anything other than linear-cave-with-shortcut-to-beginning layout?
Yes, many of them had multiple ways of entering them, as well as multiple exists, especially when it came to forts and old ruins.

>Nobody gives a fuck what character models look like in a game where you just download mods for that shit anyway.
I never felt the need to download character mods for skyrim because they weren't anywhere near as bad as Oblivion.

If coast forest and mountain aren't unique geography then I don't know what is anon.

Skyrim arguably only really has plains, forests, coast and mountains and any of those but with "snow" prefixed anyway. And plains were still in Oblivion.
>>
>>283544395
>but with "snow" prefixed
Only 4 of the 9 holds any snow in any significant amount.

Skyrim has
-Plains
-Rift valley
-Pine forest
-Volcanic hot-springs
-Marsh/sawmp
-Autumn Forest
-Mountain valley
-Iceburg cliffs
-and the area around solidus which is a bit of everything
>>
I think what makes the smaller cities okay is the setting. Skyrim is a nordic land primarily, where people live in villages scattered through out the province and seem to prefer that to the cities.
>>
>>283544395
>plains, forests, coast and mountains
It's more nuanced than that. Whiterun is low-altitude alpine plains, while the Pale is snowy plains. Falkreath is an evergreen forest with snow, while the Rift is autumnal. Hjalmarch is a swampy coast, while Winterhold is icy. The Reach is jagged mountains, while Haafingar is coastal cliffs, and Eastmarch is volcanic slopes.
>>
>>283545631
Skyrim is also a backwater province to begin with, to expect ti have cities rivaling that of the multicultural seat of the empire is just dumb to begin with

>>
>>283545727
Exactly. The land is barely developed, most of its structures are ruins or damaged. It's war torn. People are poor farmers or soldiers. There isn't the money, manpower, or time in Skyrim to build a large sprawling city. The people who live in the cities are the wealthy, and there's not many wealthy people in Skyrim.
>>
>>283545829
Doable, but stupid. The dialogue would Cyrodiil NPCs telling you to go to Cyrodiil cities to take on Cyrodiil marks. You' be better off recreating all of Oblivion in Skyrim.
>>

I think they are a good size as to not scare players off or discourage them. Just big enough for most people to explore thoroughly. I still would like a proper city for once though. But as long as they cling to their gamebryo/creation engine it wont happen.

They'll have to fill it with NPCs and quests but if the landmasses have had this much progress I don't think the rest will be too bad either
>>
>>283547485
They cant make worse quests than bethesda did, so i wouldnt worry about that.
Thing is, even if its just quests and NPC's, that alone is going to take some fucking time to make.
>>
>>283547716
Well what I'd expect is them to port old quests from the area's respective games in, along with the NPCs. Apparently there's a large team working on it, so, hopeful optimism, however it's been 3 years already.
>>
>>283547994
They have groups working on each region, which obviously makes it all faster, but could result in quality differences.
I could imagine porting some quests, but a lot of quests in oblivion or morrowind wouldnt make sense in the skyrim time.
I just hope it has about the same quality as Nehrim. That would be fantastic.

Oblivion could also be dark even though it was colorful. It relied heavily on atmosphere, an aspect I think they fucking perfected with Oblivion.
>buy cheap house

>GHOSTS
>terrifying atmosphere
>run past it whenever I have to pass it in Anvil
Also, do I need to remind you fucking faggots of the REAL TERROR when doing the later Dark Brotherhood quests? Which, in turn, is one of the best questlines ever fucking made?

>>
>>283548968
That's what I mean though.
Even though the graphics ain't the best, it still managed to create a pretty frightening scene. It relied on surprise, fear of the unknown (brand new house) and low visibilty (it was pretty dang dark) to get it's scares, not flashy graphics.
Also, I HATED being interrupted mid-sleep in that game, that in itself was terrifying enough and I fucking jumped a foot the first time Lucien visited me because it was so unexpected and all I had ever noticed before from the Dark Brotherhood was "Your actions have been witnessed by forces unknown". That was pretty spoopy if you ask me.
Then again, I could just be a massive faggot but to each his own, I guess. Oblivion is my GOAT, after all.

because they cared about oblivion. i remember buying the colelctors version while waiting for my computer parts to arrive back in 06' i would fall asleep watching the documentary in anticipation of playing, and you could just see the passion and spirit they put into it. and even though the game was procedurally generated, there was still so many hand crafted items and locations. you can really tell the difference between a copy and paste game, and a hand crafted game.

thats why oblivion had better cities.

>the only good quests in an elder scrolls game since morrowind
I think Oblivion's Thieves Guild outdid its Dark Brotherhood. DB had some fun quests and I liked the creative ways available to assassinate some targets. But the atmosphere and characters in the guild were shitty and I never cared what happened to them, so the storyline didn't really engage me. And the murder mystery quest was a cool concept, but I quickly realized that it was completely fucking broken and there was no way to get caught no matter where, when, or who saw me when I killed a guest. I came out of it with a smile for all the wrong reasons; it was just laughable.

The final Thieves Guild heist, however? That was nothing short of spectacular.

Still, I agree with you that Skyrim's counterpart to Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood doesn't hold a candle to it in quest design. But there's no need to exaggerate to that level.

Because they skimped on the dungeons. Also city. Singular. Only 1 city was good. The rest were forgettable and small as their skyrim counterparts. Morrowind had the last decently sized city, but nowhere near as detailed as daggerfall.

When i boot up morrowind my pc looks like a mom who went to doctor school, and gave up her career to raise up kids, and then the kids turned out to be shit.

But those caves were even worse than the normal Draugr caves. Only actually cool cave in Skyrim was Blackreach which you had only read about in old books or heard about from researchers and the like in earlier games, but to actually GO THERE and see all the crazy shit in the HUGE underground area was fucking amazing. Not to mention: SINDERION as a fucking skellyman, and he STILL has a Nirnroot quest for you!

It wasn't what it was described in the books, but it still felt like a city. It had lots of homes, it had different sectors, it had several shops and most of them sold things that weren't weapons and ingredients (In fact, there were a couple of different shops that sold the same things), it had sewers, it had several garrisons, it had three hotels and different taverns and there was something to do in every part of it.

>Oblivion apologists nostalgiawanking over their game, thinking it's any better than Skyrim
Disgusting. Almost as disgusting as Daggerfallfags.

Daggerfall sucks.

The cities are boring and lifeless, NPC's are just walking dolls who all have the same stock lines.

There are thousands of towns, but very little reason to visit any of them. They all just have the same stores, the same temples, the same guilds, and of course lots of empty houses.

There are thousands of dungeons, but exploring them is kind of boring. The combat is clunky, the treasures are mostly just the same "you found 50 gold!" or "you found some slightly better armor!" you see in every RPG. Or, occasionally you'll find a map that leads to a "secret" dungeon that's no more awesome than the dungeon you were just in. Yippee!

Oh, and did someone say "procedural generation"?

99% of the game's towns and dungeons were computer generated. Don't even expect a professional level of quality in the game's map design, you won't find it. The only people who like Daggerfall are poorfags who can't play Morrowind and Oblivion.

If I wanted to comb randomly generated dungeons for loot, I'd play Nethack, at least Nethack has a goal to look forward to.

If I wanted to explore gloomy labyrinths in 90's 3D, I'd download one of countless fan-made levels for Doom or Quake. At least those games have decent combat.

If I wanted to "roleplay" and create a story about my character in a single player game, I'd play Fallout. At least Fallout has unique NPC's and some neat dialogue trees.

If I wanted to experience the absolute worst of these three things, I'd play Daggerfall.
