Pic related just shipped and it's on the way to my doorstep as we speak, never gotten a chance to play an SMT game, so what am I in for /v/?
A less good SMT 3. In my opinion, the persona games are better. The characters in that game are bland as hell, but the game plays pretty much like any SMT game. If you like turn based, you'll like that game.
It's good. Like a grimdark Pokemon. Interesting battle mechanics. Decent graphics, good music.
It starts out pretty hard, especially if you're unfamiliar with SMT's battle mechanics, but after a while it gets pretty easy. The hardest part is navigating Tokyo, so don't feel ashamed to look up a map.
Story is so-so. There's 4 endings so lots of replay value.
I can get into any Pokemon-esque experience, has anyone here played persona q that might be able to shed some light onto how that plays and whether or not I should dig deeper into the persona series on my psp
OP, I'll debate this anon on the basis that this was my first SMT and actually found it really engaging and not repetitive in the slightest.
After having played other (older) entries in the series, SMTIV isn't the best, but it's definitely shat on to an unnecessary degree by /v/. It's a perfectly respectable and imaginative RPG with plenty of interesting shit going on, from both a gameplay and story perspective. Plus the soundtrack is kickass. The only really noteworthy negative I can come up for it is that some of the monster designs created for this game suck ass.
You ever played etrian odyssey?
Its pretty much exactly that.
Vanilla first person dungeon crawling, but with demon fusion.
It's fun, but I wouldn't suggest playing it before Persona 3 and 4.
Yes you should get more into Persona on the PSP More specifically, a PSP emulator. PSP load times + long special attacks make speed-up important in the earlier PSP personas
The first part of the game is going to kick your ass, but once you get access to a wider variety of skills it will become easier.
Just remember the most important rules of SMT:
>Abuse enemy weaknesses
>FUSE FUSE FUSE
In other words, you're in for a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy mythology.
Good SMT game that's better enjoyed after experiencing 1/2/SJ because of fan service.
Has a fucking amazing OST, and really good atmosphere and world building.
Story is okay and characters are generic SMT characters that sometimes go a bit too retarded, but otherwise it's enjoyable.
Game goes back to law vs chaos which I honestly prefer over the system used in nocturne.
Still a decent introduction to the series, and you might not enjoy it as much if played directly after nocturne.
Well sounds like I've been on the right path then, it's kind of fucking surprising that this thread has stayed civil and actually answered my questions, thanks everyone for not immediately shit posting and making me regret asking you guys for advice.
Build straight Dex or Straight Mag. I'm more fond of the Mag route but Dex does literally everything. Ignore Str and make sure to sub stat Agi or Luck.
Fusing is crazy weird if you're unused to SMT, but SMTIV makes it much easier. Soundtrack is pretty good, story is average and well built but the characters are one-dimensional and hurt the story a lot.
A very traditional style dungeon crawl with some pokemon mechanics. It starts out stupid hard (shit can one shot you), but once you get going it's a decent challenge. Music is awesome, and setting interesting. Talking to demons can be pretty funny sometimes.
SMT 1 and 2-esque story and feel in a more modern engine
if you're expecting being a demon while yelling WE SACRIFICE THE SON OF HEAVEN MANS GREATEST GLIMPSE OF FIRE RED
and having daisojou cover your ass, this isn't your game
also, soilent green is people
Adding on to this, you could even make a pure Luck build viable if you're feeling bold.
It's actually a lot of fun because with high Luck you can easily abuse the Hama and Mudo spells for insta-kills. Oh, and you'll have an easy time with demon negotiation too.
>Debuff him all the way down
>Exploit the fuck out of him
>Think I'm winning
>Rocks my ass
So boys, I've started up SMT I for the first time, I've got Nocturne, SMT IV, SJ, P3, P4, a little bit of DDS, and a little bit of Raidou 1 under my belt. Will this game fuck me? Anything I should remember?
Is there any good way to counter almighty attacks other than to tank up, fighting lucifers 2nd phase and other than the MC my whole team wipes when he does like 3 almighty attack in a row.
>All this Persona recommendation
I love the mainline SMT games but can't really enjoy P3/4.
Just play the game as much as you like, and if you're hankering for more and if you feel like
not devouring your friendstry out Persona; otherwise there's a load of previous SMT games for you to enjoy.
There are some nice mostly spoiler-free guides and FAQs on the /smt/ general on /vg/
What are you in for? Wrecking sht of medusa, flattering her to make her weak whil hearing this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6cSbof7Pik
In my oppinion a quite good SMT which has more in common with the first one than the rest.
That stupid Zealot special demon who can null phys. I shit you not, i had a Succubus on last legs and my zealot without mana. Still i managed too kill him even before he fakes his own death.
SMT4 is pretty great, but SMT Bizarre Adventure is the best.
I really want to play it, but it was never released in europe which pushes the prices upward. Everything over 40 bucks is too much. Wish it would get one of those DeSu threathments.
the thing is these games are considered lame trash in japan
you, the american, only find them fun because of the hot anime girls and lingo
pokemon/digimon/persona/blazblue are to japan what call of duty is to america and viced-versa
I don't even play Persona but I'm calling your bullshit
the ammount of persona-related shit released in Japan proves you wrong
also I don't think you realise japan is even more about waifus and fanservice than any western otaku community
stop talking out of your ass
At least you aren't in Sector E... Right?
SMT:IV was actually my introduction to the series. It was fun and never too difficult. The only part that was actually challenging were the first few missions. Story is alright. It's not fantastic but it's not totally boring. The OST and gameplay though is worth the price alone.
The better question is why SMT hasn't had any refreshing changes to gameplay and story?
After awhile you have to consider why SMT has to ride on Fire Emblems coattails and not Persona.
This might be my favorite random battle music of all time.
>all of that shit happening right before going to
>shit's getting real in the story
>get into a battle
The old games already had a great soundtrack. If the fight LAW against CHAOS sounds this good i won´t care.
Not if you have to pay 30 bucks extra for shipment.
Exactly, Persona can build on itself and become more.
SMT cannot. It can only exist as one off stand alone games with no significant changes to game play to make it more interesting.
But I knew that, anon.
SMT1 is so cool conceptually, but I can't ever get past
Kongokai.It's just so boring.
Why would anyone want SMT to change what it is? It's a Dungeon Crawler through and through like Wizardry and it still shines with the theme/setting alone.
If you wanted Spin-off versions, you have Devil Summoner which is still SMT minus the post-apocalyptic theme.
Good on you, pal. I hope you enjoy it.
Strange Journey is the best SMT, only lacking a god tier ost.
SJ is everything an SMT game should strive to be. Extremely challenging, extremely fun, fucking fantastic mechanics, engaging maps and dungeons, great demon choices, and and fantastic overall story.
>lacking a god tier OST
Hahaha, fucking please.
>lacking god tier ost
nigga apart from normal battle everything in sj is god tier, and even that is after 30 secs
>Not if you have to pay 30 bucks extra for shipment.
I must have imagined of all these games I bought on play-asia with free shipping then.
It's currently cheaper on VG+.
