Guys, I'm reading through the Horus Heresy books for the first time(I got the compendium set of books 1-12 from B&N).

These books are making me really sad. Everything seemed so promising and then it all came crashing down. :,(

>>277278313
A game where you play as inquisitor would be awesome.

An RPG of sorts where you travel from planet to planet to get to the bottom of some chaos/xeno plot that threatens to destroy the Empire.
It would have have some moral choices like do you use chaos and it's artefacts to aspire to greater good and some shit and in the end you could be turned to chaos and just try to destroy the empire yourself which would be a wholly new storyline aside from the good one.

The potential for 40k vidya is so vast it's unbelievable.

It's a fucking damn shame we get lackluster productions that barely scratch the surface of what could be.

Space Marine was decent but it doesn't live up to the source material.

Dawn of War was pretty cool but Dawn of War II was shit in comparison.

The MMO is gonna be dog shit.

When will we get the true 40k vidya?
>>
>>277278070

Gaunts Ghosts from front to back is pretty decent. Starts out fairly okay with a really crunchy midsection and in the last triplet 'Traitor General' is really solid.

Eisenhorn. Ravenor. Storm of Iron is very good.
Hammer of Daemons is pretty interesting. Alot of the short little Imperial Guard paperbacks that got shoved into omnibus titles are some of the coolest sci fi I've touched. I can't remember them all though.

That's about it from me.
>>
>>277278250

>>
>>277278685
He asked for the bes of 40K, which means he probably wants a starting point, which it is and Eisenhorn is easily one of the better bits of writing when we're speaking specifically of 40K literature.
>>
>>277278829
Gaunts is the superior Abnett choice

And you didn't even mention Horus Heresy

Most of the Horus Heresy is decent. Lightning Tower, Prince of Crows, anything by ADB standing out. Also Angel Exterminatus and Scars are fantastic. Primarch's shit talking and fighting each other.
Fifteen Hours is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read, a great read. Night Lords trilogy is pretty good, blood reaver is a little slow but still pretty good.
Word Bearers are slow but the first one is amazing with the addition of the Elysians. Just started the Macharian Crusades books and the second one features a shit ton of DE and an amazing intro from the point of view of the DE.
Ciaphas Cain are really good reads as well. Any story.
Dead Men Walking features the glorious Death Korp fighting Necrons and it ahs a very depressing ending which is always a plus
Storm of Iron and anything about 40k Iron Warriors is hnnnghhh. I suggest the Iron Warriors Omnibus. Based around Honsou and it is amazing
Could not for the life of me get into the Salamander series. Nick Kyme is just so boring it kills me
Talon of Horus is one of the best 40k books I've ever read. ADB is a fucking genius and Abaddon is actually likeable now
All I can think that I've read atm.
Tip on the Horus Heresy from a guy who's read everything but the recent Advent short stories, start with the first 3 listed in the series then do First Heretic. Way better Battle of Isstvan V battle from Argel Tal's point of view. After that read in whatever order you want.
>>
>>277279109
Isn't horus series the best way to start reading books since it has a coherent story and pretty much sets in motion everything that later happens?

Except if the books focus on time before the heresy that is

40k has always been about scale. Reducing it to small unit real time tactics just lessens the whole experience. I want to see a Daemon Prince fighting a Squiggoth while thousands of ork boyz and cultists battle it out, not micro my three units around. Really felt like they were limited in scope by the COH engine.

It makes a huge difference coming from the universe as a grimdark battlefield and then seeing what caused it.

also the space wolves sage is pretty good since you got a feeling how a space marines is created their duties and stuff with a little glimpse at terra and their politics with navigator houses and so on

>40k has always been about scale
No, in fact quite the opposite. The only thing that was about the scale was the novelty joke lore like the Warhammer books they peddled around so that the kids who liked edgy grimdark stuff would get hooked and spend their money on figures. Sadly some people were so stupid they actually took the pretty obvious parody that is the Warhammer 40k setting seriously.

You've fucked up OP.

The Dark Eldar game should be a scifi GTA set in Commoragh as you butcher your way to a position of power in the dark city, fighting rival gangs and factions, engaging in realspace raids for spoils, decking yourself out in crazy dark eldar tech, or even altering your body by joining a haemonculus coven, or joining an arena, or joining an incubi temple...

the options are just endless.

Such a turn from the bad ass from the Heresy or the Despoiler of previous 40k novels. I also loved Khayon and co. Sperged at the end when they mention my favorite loyalist of all time Sigismund
Got kind of gay at the end when ADB let his daddy issues poison his writing, but it's whatever

As for the Heresy it's still mostly filler, doesn't look like it's going anywhere soon, but I definatly suggest Scars. Very well written, and Jaghatai and Yesugei and Tamu are very cool characters, as well as a fucking sick fight between the Khan and a guy I don't want to spoiler at the end. Betrayer was also good, features some actual progress, it details the Shadow Crusade led by Lorgar and Angron, with Kharn as the main character and Argel Tal also. Blood for the Blood God starts here
Vengeful Spirit is also progress because it details how Horus got the chaos armies behind his back.
Unremembered Empire is just basically The Night Haunter's wacky Macragge vacation, is ok but you don't really need that one.
>>277281186

It would have to have some sort of soft-cap or at least very prominent diminishing returns after a set amount of Orks spawned.

They'd also probably have to use the Unreal Engine if they want to have a snowballs chance in hell of rendering that many units.

If you think the game could be designed to not show so many units at once, it might work.
>>
>>277278802
Went from a good rts with a bright future to some weird as fuck moba esq thing. Multiplayer when I was playing it was terrible just mashing the retreat button and caping then decaping points in a ring around way also the maps were utter and complete shit. Campaign was extremely lackluster and aside from angel forge very boring especially retribution which was fucking terrible. The whole game is a disservice to the lore and setting sure the small scale and focus on individual troops works for space marines and Eldar but literally every other race it falls flat.

They should have taken it in the opposite direction instead of focusing on small scale tactical battles they should have thrown caution to the wind and branched out to a larger scale. Think Company of Heroes with its command trees and not supreme commander but an inbetween for them. Cover destructible envirements but increased size

I still think full-blown-Total-War-style would have been a good place to go for DoW3.

With obviously smaller platoons for the races that don't win on numbers, and all in real-time. Don't think the entire "board map" from TW would have worked well in DoW.

Because Night Lords are god tier and ADB is also god tier.

If any of you like Night Lords books but haven't read Lord of the Night check that one out too.

>mfw reading about Orks for the first time

This is fucking awesome.

Are there Ork books worth reading?
>>
>>277281279
Was meaningless, bad writing, boring characters. It means fucking nothing. It's centered around killing the biggest ship ever made, and then in Betrayer Lorgar brings out two more and basically says "lmao that retard couldn't handle that ship w/e I have two more'

Because ADB has had his hand in most of them, and the tenth company is the single most based company in all of the Astartes. Malcharion, Xarl, Talos, even the fucking Flayer Variel. Even if it was just Malcharion it would be the best series ever
'Who are you, my Lord?'
'I am Malcharion, former tenth captain of the Night Lords, called War Sage by my primarch. I wrote political treatise and my primarch said I should have been a member of the thirteenth, where my wit would be more appreciated.'
'What's a primarch?'
'Just a myth, forget I spoke.'

That McNiel night lords story where Kurze goes full edge and kills the guards was the worst 40k fiction I've ever read. At least it only lasted 3 pages

Any good Heresy era stuff? I remember a couple short stories being good, but it's been so long.

The coolest thing for me about the Orks is the Psychic fluff.

They are the galaxy's greatest latent psykers. By thinking something that is painted red goes faster... it does.

By thinking something painted yellow explodes bigger, it does.

There guns don't work if a Guardsmen picks them up, but because the Orks believe they work, they do. There is a an awesome part ina short story where a lone guardsman finds an Ork gun on the ground following a battle - he crawls over to it, bleeding to death

He aims it at the nearest Ork and tries to fire it, but nothing happens. Then the ork turns around and see's him - and as soon as he does, and the Ork becomes aware of the gun it fires and kills the Ork.

I love that shit.

Prince of Crows, Child of Night, The Lighting Tower isn't really about them but it's about Dorn admitting he's scared shitless, not of Horus or the treachery, but of Curze
Not really anything else worth mentioning, hopefully we'll get our ADB written full length Night Lords book in the Heresy
One day, one day

Are there any copies of Helsreach without the shitty epilogue that ruins what would have been a good ending?

Jesus Christ that was bullshit.

After he finishes up the Abaddon series, of course.

We have time though, hopefully we'll be able to read it before we go completely senile and blind since ADB takes fucking forever to write. I guess it's worth it though since that guy shits out gold when he's finished

What a good starting point for reading the books?

He cares not from whence it flows, only that it does. I think he color-codes it, too.

On a related note: An Inquisitor/Witch Hunter 40K game where you take up the role of an Ordo Hereticus member tasked with gallavanting about the Imperium, weeding out corruption and slaughtering Pskyers, Tech-Priests, Mutants, and all sorts of other twisted Warp-ridden creatures with an arsenal of seething weapons.

Including melee combat with Power Swords and the like, and ranged Inferno Pistols. Stealth would be optional, but rewarding, as would successful interrogations.

It pissed me off. Having the exact same epilogue without them being alive would have been fine.

Now I just want to ask, because I've always wondered: what the hell is up with the Sisters of Battle?

I know they're all about muh Emperor and such, but is that it? Are they essentially just female Space Marines?

Do their beliefs match those of the Murines perfectly with only exception being that the Sisters are female only?

I never really understood why it is they need to exist when the Emperor already has so many warriors as it is.

I actually thought it was kind of nice when I saw the "Yes yes?" or whatever he says. But yes, it wasn't really needed.
