It's highly recommended to choose shield.

Whichever you choose will effect when you learn certain skills. If you go with shield, you get the very useful Once More and Second Chance skills early.

THey can make some battles a whole lot easier. If you choose sword or staff, you won't be getting them until like level 90.

I will always love pridelands because they put A LOT of work into it with lion-sora and everything, it has it's own separate set of animations, that shit was much more challenging to implement than you think.
You give you an idea, it was a world that they planned for KH1, but gave up on it because it was too challenging from a technical point of view at the time.
They tried again in KH2 and made it work.
There's a lot of shit in KH2 that was planned content in KH1, that's why it's such a solid sequel.
