>Yakuza 5 will be released in your lifetime.
Now we just have to hope for Yakuza 0.

I bought Yakusa 3 today. Is it a good starting point?

First one I played, yes it is. Best gameplay and videos explaining the plot of yakuza 1 and 2
>>
>>275616970
No. Why do people keep asking this. Play them from the beginning.

Yakuza 2 is probably even the best game in the series. You would be doing yourself a huge disservice by skipping it and just watching a recap.
>>
>>275616752
>Yakuza 5 will be released in your lifetime.
It was already released anon
>>
I'm starting with 2, but I've watched the video summing up the first game and have seen the movie which is an adaptation of the first one. I'll probably go back and play it eventually, but the dub is kind of a turn off. Other than Mark Hamil being in it anyway.

It's completely up to you. All the games have menu options to recap each game, and while they're quite in-depth, we both know there's nothing like playing the actual games. It's highly recommended you play them in chronological order to truly fall in love with Yakuza.

The combat in the first game can put a lot of people off due to how clunky it is. If you're willing to give it a go, don't do full 4-hit combos too much when surrounded, just do 2-3 hits then back off. Makes combat a lot easier when you're not just punching thin air, then getting punched in the back of the head. I say this because I've heard these complaints, and seen a few people on Youtube do it, and complain. Also grabbing can be a bit of a pain as you can easily miss your mark and be left open to attack.

A lot of people agree the second in the best of the franchise, and the combat is less clunky with lock-on improved. BUT of course if you're willing to start with the PS2 games, go with the first obviously. I find the first two games emulate well even on toasters. Also, the move from PS2 to next gen is quite breathtaking as the city comes to life so to speak.

In the end it doesn't really matter all that much as the recaps in 3 and 4 are really well done. People have started with the PS3 games and fallen in love, just to go back to playing the PS2 entries. Just have fun and thanks for supporting the series, granted your copy of Y3 isn't pre-owned. But you can get Y4 via PSN now.

ENJOY
>>
>>275617184

Because they're new to the series, and a lot of games have shitty first installments and so forth.
>>
So, I bought used copies of Yakuza 3 and 4 cause together they were about the same price as a digital copy of 4. Should I buy a digital copy of Dead Souls sometime down the line to make up for it?

Honestly emulate (or buy) the first. Then move into HD.

5 should be out by the time you replay 4 or maybe 3~!

Play the first then find the full Yakuza movie on Youtube.

Or watch this prequel beforehand.

3 is a fine starting point. You miss out on small subplots but there's a good 4~ hours of cutscene recap in the beginning of 3, so it's not like you'll go in blind.

Actually been meaning get into the series, but the way Sega was treating localizations of some of the later games was making me worried that I'd be getting into a Dragon Quest-esque situation (in that the more I played and got into the series, the more annoyed I'd get at the publisher for not localizing the later entries/versions). That said, it is good to hear that Sega's taken their head out of their ass (if even momentarily) and be willing to localize Yakuza 5, and hopefully be willing to stick with bringing the other games the west hasn't gotten over.

On a related note, I found a complete copy of Yakuza 2 last night for $12, though I suppose I should start with the first game before playing that one, since it sounds like there's ongoing continuity or something that wouldn't make jumping in from whichever entry one chooses all that bright.

Hypocrisy, yadda, yadda, yadda. People will be more lenient of shit like that when it's a feature inside a game that's mechanically sound and that plays well.

Not that that excuses QTEs. They're still the same trivial shit in any game they've ever appeared.

>>275631592
It's because in Yakuza every QTE is earned, and they're rarely instant kills. There's a whole lot of gameplay surrounding the QTEs in Yakuza, so they aren't a get-out-of-jail-free/press x to win mechanic.

Also they're all context sensitive and there are hundreds of unique Heat actions to do. Variety and good animations go a long way.
>>
>>275632960
>whole lot of gameplay surrounding the QTEs

It's the same in God of War but /v/ hates it for this.

That doesn't mean everyone thinks God of War is bad. I've never complained about QTEs in God of War and I'm sure thousands of other people on /v/ don't give a shit either.

I finished 1, that was good but the battle system is pretty bad, not GoW or Batman bad as there IS some sort of depth to it, but it was really clunky and the buffer was especially annoying when you can't cancel shit

In the middle of 2 now, Kaoru a best, the plot is much better, so much that I lost interest in side missions completely, anyone know if it's okay to miss most of them?

What in the world is missable in Yakuza 1? The only information I can seem to find is that the hungry kid in front of Purgatory is missable, but outside of that I have no clue what else is. I've ignored a couple of those hostess missions right now, but they're still on my list.

If you want to complete them all, missing them in the early games is really bad, because they disappear and don't return. I think from Y3 on, after you complete the game all the substories start popping up again so that you can complete them all.

Still costs money son, even if released digitally. For a niche as fuck series that doesn't sell well in the west. They have been slightly justified with the lack of faith over here. There is no reason to re-release the HD collection to a fanbase that is smaller than those that scoop up the shit that is sonic every year.

Emulate the first two, thank your lucky stars we got another shot at the series coming over. Especially when it is a fantastic entry, along with the rumors of 0 coming as well. We hit the literal jackpot on something other series haven't even gotten a chance at.

These are the settings I use for Yakuza. It runs extremely well, and the only ghosting I've seen is also present in the original when play it on actual hardware. Can't seem to do anything about the faint line in the middle, but honestly you hardly notice it when you're playing, and it's not always there anyway.

Yakuza 2 may or may not run well with these settings. I believe a few changes need to be made but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

Also I forgot how much I hate the camera in Yakuza 1, especially when fighting in-doors in crowded places like that god damn Go parlor.

Basically a character persuades Kiryu that these kids, Haruka in particular, would most likely never leave Kiryu's side if it were up to them
which would be stifling their development and ability to "dream" (get used to hearing that word by the way, it pops up a fucking lot in this game) and Kiryu needs to be the one to push them out and so on

There are some things that are just really weird in the way that they're handled though. Like Yayoi Dojima, the lady who is acting leader of the Tojo for a while until Daigo comes in. You already fixed a lot.
Use a x3/4 native resolution
Enable Texture Filtering
Enable HW Hacks: Half-Pixel Offset and Nvidia Hack if you have one.

The Half-Pixel is only used to fix ghosting and the x3 resolution should make for every black lines that would appear if you used the Pixel option.

My computer is barely handing 1920x1080 custom resolution, so I can't go any higher(I think 3x is like 15xx by 7xx?), texture filtering is squared and looks way better but I did that earlier, and Half-Pixel Offset has been ticked since the start. Can't use the Nvidia hack, so I'm not sure what I should do to fix this thing. I tried 4x resolution but the game grinded to a halt and I basically had this giant + across the entire screen.

The presentation of the games are so good they kinda hide the shitty writing, at least for a while. 3 had that thing you said, but it also the stupid as shit terrorism plot. It's a game about the Yakuza, and you're fighting fucking terrorists and CIA agents. To top it off, Wesker, the guy that was a CIA agent and the leader of the terrorist group, had no idea that the whole military base thing was bait, even though his partner knew.
4 is kinda better because they tone down the scale, but it fucks up with the sheer amount of coincidences the game had. Like Saejima drifting exactly near Kazuma, and that other guy doing exactly the same, one week later. There was other stuff. Seemed like really lazy writing.

I thought Akiyama started off well, but it kinda floundered after with Taiga, besides his prologue without standing and his fight with Majima, like with the whole Kido business and Tanimura in general. And Kazuma's was way too short. Without the side quests I thought I could have finished his route in less than an hour flat.

The climax was a great pay off.

That's strange, it usually like the white line in the middle of screen, subtle.
I hope you enjoy it.
Also, i give a little help for Yakuza 2.
After a determined chapter, i will appean an error related like "error_dvd_something" and the game stop.
Save the end of the chapter like the game ask you, the error will appear. You just have to switch the dvd with the next and load the save like you were playing normally on the ps2.
A lot of people seems happened and didn't tried that.
I did and it worked.

That was one of the best moments in the game, he truly thought he killed those men and hated how everyone thinks he's amazing for it when he didn't feel proud of it at all. And in the end, he still has to live out his sentence for 5. What?
>>
>>275659339
I need to improve it, any tips?
Probably did a mistke with the grammar but i'm not an english native
>>

It is mentioned that it's a shortened sentence he's serving in 5
whatever the hell it's for

I feel like Kazuma wasn't even suppose to be in 4, he feels shoehorned.
The climax is always awesome, but i feel like it didn't had as much of an impact as Nishikiyama in 1 or Goda 2. Those characters were introduced early in the game, and you could see their relations with Kazuma developing. In 4

You fight Kido with Saejima, which i don't know, felt kinda flimsy.

Arai with Akiyama, which was actually cool, because they had along relationship before.

Kazuma fighting Daigo, which again, felt kinda flimsy. You don't see much of Daigo at all through the game. But the fight was so awesome I'm willing to let it go.

But the worse of all was Tanimura. The police chief hardly knew him, thought he was dead, and they had no relation. And the fight was kinda lame too. I just hate guns in brawlers i guess, and after you fight all his guards, the fight is basically Tanimura comically chasing a senior citizen and kicking the shit out of him. Also, he can't fucking secure a suspect for shit, put handcuffs or him or something, specially if he already tried to shoot someone.
>>
Who else cried at Rikiya's death
>>
>>275659498
It doesn't really ruin it, though.
He felt truly guilty for the hit, that says a lot about the character, even if the reveal was stupid.
>>
>>275659339

>IKUZE
>>
>>275659498
There was also Arai, a fucking cop, shooting his boss and not realizing it was a rubber bullet. He didn't even checked his pulse or anything.
>>275660012
It ruins the scene at least. It was so awesome seeing Saejima with a gun in his mouth blasting fools. But then jklol they're alive.
>>
>>275659795
how about
>Kazuma remembes when he visisted the nintendo thread
>>
>>275659875
Kiryu definitely was shoehorned into Y4, and it feels like he's sorta forced into "taking the lead" amongst the main cast
It feels the same way with Akiyama in Y5
>>
>>275659875
I thought that Kido Fight was something like "Saejima facing his younger self", since they have a lot in common. But Kido is rotten guy who just wants to be famous, that's why he loses to more noble and honorable Taiga.

With Daigo I agree.
Tanimura - well, I didn't mind the fight, since it made a good use of his parry skills.
>>
>>275659875

Honestly the final battle should have just been all four vs Arai. They spent the whole game setting up Arai as the big mastermind, and then don't even give any insight into his backstory or motivations besides "I just want justice".

Daigo especially felt really shoehorned in. It's like
>"Daigo, what the fuck are you doing here?"
>"I need money, lol."
>>
>>275659875
>I feel like Kazuma wasn't even suppose to be in 4, he feels shoehorned.
Yeah that's what meant, properly use him or don't put him in at all.

Does the camera/combat get better in 2? I'm loving the first game so far, it's pretty amazing. But I have a lot of trouble in fights with lots of enemies because I'm always fighting with the camera or trying to lock onto enemies proper, and it's a huge pain in the ass. Nothing worse than taking a ton of hits because your aim is off due to camera bullshit.
>>
>>275660291
Original japanese title is Heir to the Legend, so Kityu had to be in the game to give new characters some sort of blessing with his fists.
>>
>>275660456
>"Daigo, what the fuck are you doing here?"
>"I need money, lol."

It was an interesting point, actually, since Kazuma is kinda responsible for Tojo's money losses.
>>
>>275660602
Yep, it gets a little better.
But it was Yakuza 3 that nailed both things.
>>
>>275660602
2 gets a lock-on feature.

The Japan-only HD Remake of Yakuza 1&2 apparantly adds this to Yakuza 1, coincidentally.
>>
>>275660940
>>275661015
Damn I wish we'd get the HD collection then. I'm really getting frustrated with these controls in some fights. Almost makes me want to skip to 2 and watch one of those Yakuza 1 summary videos.
>>
>>275661116
Don't, fight through the pain.

I hear it's not a great game, but damn 14 bucks isn't much.

you're right. they have absolutely zero sense for it
>>

It's not really a good game, but I still really enjoyed it. It had some hilarious moments and scenes. If you enjoy the series you could easily get $15 worth of enjoyment out of it.
>>
>>275660602
Do you have evade yet? It was around the time that I got that ability that the combat got way better. The only thing I can complain about now is the stupid lock-on. It continues to lock onto people who are already beaten instead of shifting to someone else.

It's very janky and the first section of the game where you play as Akiyama is pretty dull, but I still enjoyed it.

I think I paid less than $14 for it at the time though, so there's that.

Sony really dropped the ball on All Stars. What makes Smash work is it's opening up a toy chest full of nostalgia.
Sony just threw in this guy, that guy, the other guys, and whoever wanted to promote their new thingy. While access to Crash and Spyro would be tricky at best, they still have tons of first and second party properties to draw from that they didn't think to touch. Legend of dragoon characters or even Cloud Strife would be damned solid additions that would represent the playstation brand (cloud because many people bought a ps1 specifically for ff7)
>>
>>275660291

He and Shinada is definitely feel shoehorned in.

Game should've just been Kiryu and Akiyama.

>Played demo of Yakuza 3 or 4 (been a long time so I don't know which) on PSN
>Combat felt extremely button mashy

I've played bad demos for games that turned out to be great but that experience soured my view on the series. Are there more indepth mechanics in the combat?

It's not like I expect it to play like Devil May Cry or God Hand, but Yakuza didn't feel as fun to play as The Warriors for PS2.
>>
>>275662212
I feel like Crash wouldn't be that hard, he's definitely not successful right now. Gex and Croc were other good choices.
Who do they choose? Big Daddy. A character from a game that wasn't even initially released in the Ps3. Oh yeah, and Donte.
>>
>>275662432
Bosses don't tolerate button mashing, for one thing.
And while Yakuza is not as complex as The Warriors, fighting still feels great.
There are plenty of cool moves, throws and finishers.

Maybe you should play games that you want to play and not force yourself to play something because few people on /v/ are exited for a game they waited for to be localized?
>>
>>275662432
Yeah, trying to button mash in these games above normal difficulty will lead to death. Have fun trying that on the bosses.

>The Warriors for PS2.

Yakuza is way better.

Of course the demo felt button mashy, you didn't level up and get any moves yet, y'know because you couldn't.
>>
>>275662432
You can get by button mashing random street punks, they're hardly threats on any difficulty since they're just kids. But any tougher enemies like Yakuza, especially ones with weapons, and bosses will slap your shit in if you try mash your way through. You actually need to evade and use different combos, even certain weapons are bad to use against certain enemies/bosses.

The demo you played was for 3 and it wasn't a good representation of the full game. 4 never had a demo.
>>
>>275662317
I was fine with Shinada because he atleast had a story (and admittedly he did grow on me a lot as a character by the end) whereas Akiyama was really just sorta there to be a stand-in Kiryu within the plot

Saejima should be there too but his story was all over the fucking place in Y5, imo

Shinada went to Kamurocho because ????????

>>275663273
Nope, it was the first thing I looked for. Just get used to it, Kiryu is the best voice followed by Date and Shinji. The rest range from acceptable to awful, some of Haruka's lines are so badly done.
>>
>>275663273
Every fucking thread there is this fucking retard who is either asking if he can jump to Yakuza 5 and perfectly understand everything like it's a bad thing that he has more good games to play and that one guy who complains about the dub in the first game and can't download or import japanese version of Yakuza 1.

>>
>>275663410
I'm pretty sure it was just "helping Daigo" or something at point.

What I meant was that Shinada had an actual story, yeah he is only tangentially connected to it all but he still is atleast. Akiyama had his story in Yakuza 4, not to say he can't have another story but they botched it in this game where he was just here to be turned into Kiryu 2.0.
