Also, Treasure of the Rudas. Really fucking detailed sprites with some pretty simple, but, smooth animation.

Vandal Hearts. It may not be the deepest tactical RPG around but it has the best level design in the genre and is just an incredibly fun game all around.

Are the Star Ocean games actually any good? I only ever played a bit of SO1, and it seems like a watered down Tales game with stiffer combat.

Both the main Summon Night games and the Swordcraft Story side ones were great, if lesser known in the west and coming pretty late to the point where nobody even bothered to localize the 3rd SCS sadly. That series is one of the few older ones I wish would get a decent remake/upscale/port to some more modern stuff, I feel like they're still fun and could do well given a second chance.

I think some of the later ones were stronger, though not going to lie, it's never been my favorite series. SO1 was definitely the weaker SNES title vs ToP to me, but both series have had their ups and downs.

The game aged great due to the art style. The backgrounds and sprites were all done by hand, using watercolor paint. It's a gorgeous game with some great music.

No, at least not for the third SCS, we know why that didn't come because the localizers specifically said so. Basically they hadn't gotten to the series until late, by which I mean late in the lifespan of the GBA, and by the time they were thinking about doing the third the NDS was already out. They said they felt that even though the earlier ones had actually done well it would not do well to release something for a handheld platform a year or whatever after the successor was out and it was obsolete. That reasoning only became stronger as time went by.

I can see the cold business rationale there, I mean, at this point it'd be a tough sell to try to get something new localized for the PS3 let alone the PS2 if you were starting from scratch. Yeah lots of people have those and use them but things move fast, management wants to be onto the next thing. That's why I'd like too see good updated ports, to mobile even (given controller support).

SH1 is unlike any other JRPG, literally ever. It's some creepy gothic horror (bloody and violent in spots) RPG-ing where you hear voices and are asked to tail this girl who's the key to survival or something. It's exceptional.

SH2 ditches the horror for action and humor and a WAY bigger game and manages, somehow, to be smarter and funnier and better in almost every way.

I just finish Dark Dawn and as a Golden Sun game it definitely felt weaker compared to the original 2. Still a decent game though.

Despite the whole bullshit about those vortexes people forgot about 5% into the game being the cliffhanger end, it helped ground me in terms of how much time I spent on the original games. I though GS DD was shorter compared to at least TLA, but when I booted up my old copy, I saw I had a save file from right before the last boss that was roughly the same amount of time I spent playing DD up until beating Dullahan (and has anyone really beat him without grinding or summon spamming). I could have sworn I sank so much more time into the Lost Age as a kid plus that conversion system was neat as fucking minus mistyping a code or something at the very beginning.

The bosses can be very difficult, but the leveling up system makes grinding pretty short and easy.
It's very unique, but it's easy to get lost objective-wise. Nonetheless, it's pretty awesome and it's an orgasm for people who loves collecting items and 100% everything. You should definitely give it a go.

What saga game has ever been a grindfest? The design of every game is meant to punish you for grinding because the enemies get progressively harder the more battles you fight. The art looked terrible on stills and I think a lot of complaints were about how ugly it looked in screenshots. But when the game was actually moving the characters looked great I think, the general world was beautiful too.

The difficulty part I mean is that there were no quest markers or general hints to where you progress next and it was really open ended in a lot of ways which people outside japan aren't really accustomed to in rpgs. The fact that enemies got stronger as you fought more random battles and the skill system being the classic complex saga way probably confused a lot of people too.

I loved the shit out of that game, but I can admit it probably turned away a lot of people who only gave it an hour or two to win them over. Unlimited Saga was a whole different kind of difficult though. I hated it when it first came out, but eventually went back and played it again and appreciated it a bit more.

I hate what happened to the Grandia series.

The sad thing is, they did it to themselves. They made the mistake of thinking that everyone loved the games for the combat system.

Which, isn't entirely inaccurate. But it was the combination of a good battle system + a good story that compelled me to play them.

Grandia 1? Amazing game of childlike adventure and wonder. Similar to Lunar: SSSC

Grandia 2? A more mature and thought provoking game about the nature of good and evil / religion. Similar to Lunar: Eternal Blue

It's funny because that is exactly why xtreme is my favorite, with the first game being a close second. I never actually played 2 though. And I agree that 3 was shit.

3 had all of the worse anime shit in it. Girl sees her brother kill her god in front of her fucking face right before he starts to choke her to death. "Oh he must have a good reason though!! I still love him!! :D". Then end with a final boss yelling about how "all love must perish" or whatever. They also made it amazingly easy and at the same time half ruined the combat stystem with those stupid air combos and worse mana eggs/skill books.
