There's been a huge increase in fines and bounties, so bounty hunting, whether NPCs or players, is finally becoming profitable, and with more combat ships, it's even more enjoyable.
Trading is also quite shit now, it's mostly about smuggling, which means more criminals, and more of them you can hunt, or even convince to give up their cargo so you can sell it yourself. And then there's still mining and exploration, the both being kinda linked, as the best mining spots need to be found.

And then there are military careers, salvaging of derelict ships, and an alien race with an unknown associated game mechanic that will be added on release.

There isn't as much as everyone hoped, but there sure is a lot more than most people seem to think, and a whole lot more than Freelancer's open world aspect which everyone nonetheless loves.

If your flying in space you can detect your opponent from a huge distance away, and realistic space combat would effectively be 'first to detect and shoot the other wins'

They recently implemented "ship wear" where your ship will degrade and be massively expensive to repair, even if you are just SITTING IN THE DOCK.

There is still hope for ED. Devs aren't complete retards, game is on the right path, and it's miles better than any other crowdfunded game before: just looking at the visual, sound and UI design is enough to realize it, the production values are very, very high: it's without a doubt the best space sim ever made on those aspects.

It's not lacking much to be a great game, it only happens to be some important components, that is gameplay mechanics and activities, and they'll come quickly. If you have some money to spare, buy it at release, or maybe wait some more until we at least know the full contents of the release version. Otherwise, buy it in two months maybe, once it'll be more fun.

Because if it is disappointment, then I'd love to taste that kind of disappointment more often.

Star Citizen is following a modular development. Arena Commander (dog fighting) has been getting updates you can play since like... 10 months ago. They are releasing AC 1.0 this December. Planetside Module comes out early next year. FPS Module comes out early next year. Squadron 42 Chapter 1 is slated for the first half of next year.

But what I think you are asking is, "Is the Persistent Universe a thing?" Then no, because that isn't even slated to come out until the end of next year at the earliest. In the mean time they will be adding the Boarding Module. The Repair Module. Character Creation. Etc.

Literally this entire year has been them building tools and finishing creating the UK studio. They are still hiring upwards of 30 people ATM IIRC. So yeah, that's a good thing.

Anyway, we will actually see more content roll out faster and faster now that they actually have the manpower and tools. So many Crytek Devs jumped ship to CIG when Ryse failed so horribly. If I had to guess who had the best single employees out of any studio of that size in the world? It'd be CIG. They have really top-tier mother fuckers now and have killed the contracts with the shitty 3rd party studios who they farmed out work before.

As it stands the only studios left are ones who will eventually be replaced once they can finish hiring and bringing people up to speed. It's kind of funny watching them systematically eliminate these companies.

A couple ships got turned on in the hangar but are not flyable, the latest was yesterday when the Gladiator got put in. That's about it. Yeah, I haven't touched Arena Commander and I've been following SC since it's announcement in October 2 years ago.

What I have gained from this whole process is a deep appreciation for the entrepreneurial spirit someone can house. When you consider what they have had to do so far to just get to this point, it is pretty staggering.

They created three seperate studios, had to hire and bring up to speed hundreds of people, all while feeding the starving masses at the door who gave them millions of shekels. I think you would struggle to find any game developer who has had to undergo the same pressure. Not to mention you are literally marketing your game as the greatest thing ever made, and have to actually try and meet that goal.

To me it would be like if Kojima just burned down and fired everyone at KojiPro and then set out to make The Phantom Pain from scratch.

That takes some fucking balls.

I am very cautiously optimistic because it does seem like they have something now. I was really getting afraid myself but then two months ago they showed off the Planetside and the FPS demo, and that was when I realized they actually had a game under the hood. That things were actually fucking coming together, finally.

Personally I don't see the official launch of Star Citizen happening before 2017, but I do see the Persistent Universe being added in like early 2016. With that in mind I guess you could say SC will come out in 2016, but it won't be an "official launch" as it were until the following year. A lot of people will disagree with me and say the launch is happening in 2016 but I don't see that. Not unless he hires another 100 or so designers in-house next year.
