The fuck? Douk's shotgun is almost on par with Dooms!

Meanwhile D3's shotgun was a disaster. Weak as hell, spreads the pellets into a 3x3 meter wide area from a point blank range, and also both looks and sounds like a toy.

It's a rare sight to find a shotgun that can hit things at farther than 10 feet.

The Rising Storm shotgun comes to mind as a great shotgun.

This is because of pvp. If you remember that brief period during MW2 where akimbo 1887s were all the rage you'd know how awful it is for games.

Also, if you wanna get technical, you could probably take a .18 or maybe even .12 shot from 40 feet in real life. It will hurt and you'll be pulling pellets out of you, but you'll most likely survive, maybe even from less distance I'm not quite sure. Buckshot no obviously, but birdshot yes (I've been shot with a shotgun before from about 50 feet away, was just covered in welts and had to pick a couple pellets out).

tldr, not only is it shitty for everyone else that has to play with you, long range shotguns dont make sense from a realism standpoint either

Speaking of more recent shotguns, the ones in Hard Reset and the new Shadow Warrior were disappointing. In HR, it's the invisible shockwave cone that does all the work, slow as shit, and the damage isn't great against anything other than the weakest enemies even with all the upgrades. AoW2 (multilayer doom mod that makes the game play like CNC renegade). The fucking retard behind the mod decided to give shotguns a hardcap on range and the bullets literally dissapear at 10 feet AND have huge spread. meanwhile half the weapons were just sniper variants and everyone just used fov change binds to snipe people 24-7.

Incidentally, the shotgun in CnC renegade suffers the same problem where it has very short effect range in a game where all the weapons have the effective range of several miles.

One thing I hate about Payday 2, is that the damage number shown for shotguns is applied to each pellet fired, but does not stack if more than one pellet hits an enemy. it actually pays off to LOWER accuracy so you can do collateral damage.

Ill agree it definitely does depend on a lot of factors, and I do agree combat shotguns will be better at longer range, most aren't really like this. I'd also be interested in seeing a similar graphic of projectile speed at different distances, as that slows down more with shotguns than anything else.

Im also mostly just talking to the people who think shotguns should be 1 shot instakill machines with the range of rifles, it doesnt work like that.

What's the difference between a combat shotgun and a normal shotgun?

Combat ones will probably have open chokes so they can fire breaching slugs without a problem. Other than that, they are the same as normal shotguns.

Generally shotguns aren't a great choice for combat, unless you're firing slugs. The actual damage they do to flesh isn't anywhere close to something like what a 5.56mm will do.

Well, that's not entirely true. CoD4's had about 5 feet of range, but on smaller maps, or with a bit of thinking on bigger maps, it was useable. But there's no point when you can roll an MP5 or P90 for close range.
MW2 had some legendary balance issues with shotguns, as you may or may not remember. The AA-12, 1887 and Ranger were all broken as fuck until late-game patches.
WaW has two shotguns, both are terrible.
Black Ops has decent shotguns. Roll a Stakeout or Olympia, grip, Dusty Camo and a Python for maximum cowboy action.
MW3 shotguns have similar range, and are very usable, but outclassed
>Blops 2 has some hilariously broken shotgun gameplay with a correctly set up 870. The KSG has crazy range, too.

Battlefield is the better series if you like shotguns, though. Both 3 and 4 have top-tier shottie gameplay.
