DannyB's version (the CS3D) of the soundtrack is the most soulless in my eyes. He just arranged the originals with different instruments (thus kinda ruining the chiptune aspect) without really trying anything different. Kero Blaster's entire story and lore is just a frog that needed to clean up teleporters and cure his boss. I liked it, but again, didn't really leave you with anything after you finished. It felt like a comic strip while Cave Story felt like a novel.

Like, I'm really blown away by just how well crafted this game is. It's one of the most complete games I've played in a long time.
I mean it's got everything I wanted. Challenge, decent story, exploration, great weapon selection and even the graphics and music feel well suited to the setting.

That anon is exaggerating. Pretty much all games use some kind of Domain-Specific Language to simplify logic scripting (Lua, Python, etc.) only Pixel designed his own. Most of the game engine was still programmed in (I'm assuming) C++.

I think what I love most about Cave Story is how it never tries to be anything more than what it is. Hell, if anything, it's overly humble. Just read pixel's original description of the game:

I could not beat hell without the Snake for the better part of 10 years. I don't even understand why, but any time I ran with the Spur I just got fucked endlessly in Hell, but when I used the Snake I always ended up completing it.

Honestly, that strikes me as the absolute best way to experience Cave Story.

You get invested in the story, care for the characters, but Curly sacrifices herself for you and all you get is the bittersweet normal ending. You wish that things could have been different, that you could have done something, but you accept that that's just the way the story goes. Then later, years later, after you've moved on, maybe you're feeling nostalgic. So you boot the game back up. You think you've already beaten the game, so you're just fucking around and exploring. You get to the part where you see the Professor falling but realize that you can make the jump without the booster. You think all you've found is a neat little skip, but from there you find the tow rope and realize that this wasn't here before. Then, after the core fight, just when you're getting ready to relive Curly's sacrifice, you realize what you can do.

I personally had this spoiled for me, but if I hadn't, this shit would have been once in a lifetime.

Yeah, just use less boost on those "stairs" that lead down to it. You can get down those with just a quick tap on the boost for each step.
Basically, 3 quick taps to the left in a certain rhythm, and then you can boost to the right and then up onto the platform without taking any damage.
