None, it simply seems that video games never seem to get romance right despite constantly trying to make it a major plot point. Some examples of this:

>RPGs trying to have romance as one of their main plot points
Usually these games go through ridiculously unbelievable shit in order to force the couples in them together and most of the time your (usually predetermined) love interest is some bland annoying teenager who isn't interesting in any way, only exist as eventual love interest for the main character and usually has no real reason to give a fuck about the main character. FFVIII is off the charts example of doing this sort of romance wrong.

Choosing certain dialogue options and hoping to see one or two sex scene(s) as a reward for it is far-cry from being meaningful romance. Romance in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age really feels stapled on and only seems to be there as fan-service and romance in visual novels is almost always ruined by terrible cliches and predictable plot development.

Talking to and/or bringing same item to someone everyday until you have brought enough of them for someone to love you really isn't any kind of romance. Still this type of romance works reasonably well in games which use it and it isn't horribly forced or detract from the characters like the aforementioned RPG romances tend to be. However the problems mentioned under visual novels always seem to be present here as well.

This problem is especially common in the Japanese games which always feature the exact same stereotypes as the love interests. If there is only one predetermined one it's always some bland young girl you are supposed to find cute and if there are many potential ones the choice is usually between a shy girl, an overly feminine girl, a tomboy and a serious girl who only cares about her work or studies and these same stereotypes have been used for fucking decades now. That said western games have their own stereotypes that have been done to death.

Has romance ever been done right in video games? Can it be done right?
Are there games that featuring somewhat unusual romances like ones with notable age-gap or ones where the main character does NOT get the girl in the end (which both are something movies and TV shows have been able to pull off for decades)?
Also is it just me but are most of the better romances in video games the one which doesn't feature the main character in them?
Should game developers simply stop trying to put romance in video games since it rarely seems to be done right and usually just make the games featuring them worse than they would have been without it?

The problem with Rinoa and the "romance" with her is that it simply feels like an after-through that they put in and then tried to make more important than it actully is. Now I kinda like the idea that their romance is continuation of one between Julia and Laguna that they couldn't have but please consider the following:

FFVIII's theme and main plot point is not love but fate and more specifically not being able to go against yours:
It's Laguna's fate to defeat Adel and to become president of Esthar where is forced to stay instead of being able to go back to Raine and Ellone in Winhill.
It's Squall's fate to become the leader of SeeD and to defeat Ultimecia.
It's Zell's, Quistis', Selphie's and Irvine's fate as the children of fate to defeat Ultimecia with Squall and to become the "legendary SeeDs".
It's Ultimecia's fate to get unjustly persecuted for things she hasn't even done yet, to try to overcome her fate with the time compression and ironically causing the exact thing she tried to pretend.
Everyone's fate leads up to keeping the timeloop in game's world going and its important to note no one really wanted their respective fates which is best presented by Squall not being exactly enthusiastic about people forcing the position of leadership of SeeDs to him.

Now what does Rinoa and the "romance" with her has to do with any of this? Absolutely nothing apart from Rinoa being one of the sorceresses whose powers eventually pass on to Ultimecia and that role could have easily been filled by any other female character in the game with or without romance subplot with her.

Seriously, think about all the scenes featuring Rinoa especially the ones you need to save her. I can't be the only one who thinks the game goes full-retard during them? Optional hard modes:

Hard: Romance between the characters must more than just choosing few dialogue options and getting one or two scenes as a reward for it. I'm looking at you Mass Effect.

Very Hard: There must be a notable age-gap between the characters and bullshit like "This character looks and acts like 12 year old but is actually 1000 years old!" doesn't count.

Dante Must Die: All of above must be true and the woman must be a normal human being and not some kind of deity or monster.

It might be because it was my first real romance arc in vidya, but I always felt the romantic sub plot in Final Fantasy Four was a great romance. It was very obviously used to advance the plot of the whole story. It weaves well into the whole thing and doesn't feel like a minor distraction from the plot.

Honestly, Secret of Mana is the only game that comes to mind that got romance right. The girl that joins your party does so to try and save her boyfriend, only you can't even access the forest he's in until later, so she'll eventually say, "Fuck it," and go off on her own. Then, you'll met up with her later trying desperately not to get raped by wolfmen. You kill them, she rejoins your party, and while her motivation to stay linked to the party grows, her quest for Dylan never entirely goes away, though she only mentions it just often enough to remind you, "Oh yeah, I really should do something about that."

KotOR takes place around 5000 years before the first Star Wars movie, so it kind of manages to be its own thing and isn't all that similar to the movies. You don't have to play the first game before the second, because each game tells it's own independent story (although, you will miss out some references to the first game). But, I'd definitely recommend playing both of them. KotOR is probably the last great RPG BioWare made. Also, if you play KoTOR II, make sure to get the restoration mod, because the vanilla game has a lot of cut content.
