An unorthodox pic, maybe, but Donkey Kong Country. The first one a lot than any of the other ones. That original soundtrack and its much more grounded, debased aesthetic compared to DKC2 and DKC3 (which generally were more colorful, jaunty and goofy in artstyle, with more wholly upbeat and melodic music) made it pretty intense.

I mean, listen to this. This song, in levels with blowing snow covering the whole screen in a bleak, grey and white mountain snowscape (that happens to house the hardest stretch of levels in the game)...goddamn, man. It still gets me.

F.E.A.R's scripted events were much better, and weren't repetitive.
Doom 3 was just the first AAA spooky shooter around that time, and had a head start. Even Quake 4's scripted events weren't as repetitive, so I guess they learned their lesson by then.

I actually think MM's atmosphere is very overrated. It is great in Clock Town and the observatory, but it seems much worse in the Swamp and Mountain areas. They seem far less developed than the other areas. Also, the dungeon atmosphere is poor, and really pales in comparison to the dungeon atmosphere of OoT. The Forest and Spirit temples have amazing atmosphere, way more than the temples in MM.

So I like the game, but I'm not totally crazy about it either. I think OoT, all around, has a superior atmosphere.

The Metro games. They nailed the post apocalyptic, dead city atmosphere perfectly. The atmosphere in the metros is also very unique.

The only downside to this game was the poor voice acting and dialogue that sounds like it was written by a 14-year old. It's just plain bad.

Tiberian Sun had a great atmosphere, and the music really added to it. The same could be said for Emperor, Battle for Dune.

I wish there was some kind of modern-age Pokemon Snap game where you aren't on rails, and instead you venture into caves and jungles and shit and just observe/photograph pokemon doing their shit. It would be all about ambience, design, visuals, etc. to maximize immersion. Each pokemon would have unique animations, making them truly seem like animals. You could watch them fighting each other and all kinds of shit, doing crazy pokemon things.

Transistor is more strategic, non-action oriented when it comes to gameplay, unlike Bastion. In Transistor, you freeze time, then plan out your limited movements and attacks using a combination of four abilities (which you choose from a pool of fifteen or so total abilities + various upgrades and modifiers) to deal the most damage. By the end of the game, shit can get pretty intense and quite difficult. It's well-balanced.

I thought Bastion's gameplay was incredible for an isometric action game (I liked it a lot more than Diablo), especially on the highest difficulty levels with all the idols turned on. Don't know how you'll react to Transistor though. I can't imagine how anyone could think Bastion was boring.

Not really. I mean, the interior designs and stuff were very nice to look at (approached the sort of style of Mirror's Edge imo) but the first Deus Ex was far more atmospheric, gritty and real. Everything in HR feels like it's too clean and made of plastic, even the people.
