terribly unoptimized in various parts of the engine (make a reasonably big open map in hammer that looks nice. fps dips under 40)
zero official documentation
dev tools are nigh unusable at times (studiomdl especially)
bottlenecked hard by your cpu, gpu goes almost unused
particle system is lackluster and difficult to use.


the netcode isn't that bad at least.

i've worked with source for years and it's far from a perfect engine. unreal 4 or even unreal 3 is a far superior platform for making a game on.

Tessellation isn't really a big thing when it comes to engines. It can all be done in the 3d modeling program beforehand.

That might be a problem on your end. I have a piece of shit toshiba satellite, i7 4700MQ with a nvidia 740m and 8gb RAM. Textures load within a few seconds of opening a project.

Well obviously UE4 is superior in every way but you can't compare a last generation engine to UE4. You have to wait for Source 2 which will have completely new tools optimized for highly efficient production like UE4 did.
