Endings in video games that made you cry.
That one Zelda game where the island was all a dream.
>>272941343
Look, if i'm suposed to "cry evry tim" i'm going to need some context here.
>>272941724
Play the gameMC died during the last boss battle but he got enough time to wander around the school. In that scene, the girl is giving you company (she knows your soul will leave the body any time) and your character keeps feeling tired more and more. The game even gives you an option in some point if you want to "close your eyes" or "...". Both options sends you to your death anyways.
Can't remember any.
I don't think I've played a properly sad game ever. Maybe I should look at some of those weeb VNs and get some feels going.
>>272941461
I actually just saw that scene again... and dropped a tear.
Sure, the game has tons of problems but making the player care for a whiny spoiled brat like Tidus is an accomplishment into itself.
I loved that ending.

Read Planetarium and be sad forever.
It doesn't even have any choices so if you don't like it you can shitpost about it not being a game legitimately.
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward Luna ending
holy shit i couldn't handle that shit
>>272942819
Planetarian, not Planetarium.
Ending A, followed by the next playthrough, Endings B, C, D, and finally Grimoire Nier.
Such a human feeling to Nier in the sense that all he wanted was to protect his little girl.
The snow in the summer didn't matter. It was out of place, but never mentioned. The "map" looking vaguely similar to a certain place we all know. Never mentioned, it didn't matter. The things that died. It was to protect his daughter. They didn't matter. The end result, the confusion, about the Shadowlord, Popula, Devola.. None of it mattered.
All he wanted was to save his daughter. All the replicant and gestalt both wanted to do was to save their daughter.
And as you played through it all, you didn't even realize half the shit happening around you. But it was there. You just ignored it, too.
>>272942309
Hey I remembered I got some feels from MGS3 now.
I cried when I realized I forgot the promise.
>Playing Shadow of the Colossus with my little cousin
>He was very young at the time, probably like 10 or so
>Start the game with him, he asks me who that girl is, I tell him I have no idea
>Game progresses, character starts to look sickly
>He asks about that, again, no answer
>Agro almost dies, he gets really upset and sad
>As the final cutscene is finishing up, I look over to my side and my little cousin is there, cryingRIP little dude, you were a good kid.

Or perhaps, out of a sort of scholarly instinct? While the boy slept his long sleep, I hid the results of my research inside him, transplanting the data to where it might best serve a purpose. In fact, I would like to believe... Maybe he can set things right. A boy like him who touches so many hearts—he could open the right door, and save all those people whose lives I managed to ruin. The end ofGone Home.
I know, I know. Everyone hates it. I didn't really give a shit about it until it went on sale, and Steam recommended it. It's not a "game" so much as interactive fiction, but I'm fine with that. I thought it was sweet, I thought it was poignant; and the ending made the start more sensible.
I thought it was very sweet, reminiscent of an age I lived in, and it filled me with a weird blend of nostalgia for being a kid again. It told a good story and it made me a bit weepy.

Itoi: So sad... (notices the editor's tears) Oh, just saying it is too much, isn't it?
Interviewer: "You must be tired"... I'm sorry. It's too much, even just the sound of that line.
Itoi: It's so, how do I put it... well, it's a line that even makes a boy cry, isn't it...
Interviewer: That's true... Even though he had roughed up his older brother so badly, his mother comes and tells him, "You must be tired. Here, come to your mother."
Itoi: Yeah... That one line, "You must be tired"... man, that one'll get you.

You hit the nail on the head there, the Persona games are a real slog in places but I still felt like a part of the world in a way that few video games have ever done.
The way that they re-use and remix music as the story progresses is a great way of instilling a sense of progress and changing the mood. For all of their flaws as far as gameplay and pacing goes, the story and atmosphere are unmatched by anything else I've played.

Do you really think all that buildup would just lead to MC taking a nap? You think the whole 'being extremely tired for 3 days' thing leading up to graduation along with everyone telling you that you look sick and pale was leading up to him falling asleep? That entire part was soul wrenching.Kengo:
"I don't want this."
"I finally got a chance to play with you guys..."
"I want to keep playing forever..."
I want to... get back all the time I've lost..."
"I was so desperate..."
"...to be with you guys..."
"But... now I can't... anymore..."
"I trained so hard, but nothing came of it..."
"........."
"Tell me..."
"Was my life... happy...?
Kyousuke: "No one can answer that."
"Kengo, that's something you decide yourself."
"Kengo, what do you yourself think?"
Kengo:
"........."
"...That I wasn't happy..."
"How could I say that..."
"...when I had great friends like you guys!"
"I was so happy!"
"I can't imagine life without having met any of you!"
"That's how happy I've been!"
Kyousuke:
"I see..."
"Good for you."
Kengo:
"Yeah..."
//Kengo walks up to me.
//He looks as calm and composed as he's always been.
//He stops in front of me and hands the ball over to me
//I receive it.
//He still holds his hand out toward me.
Kengo:
"Let's shake hands."
"For our friendship."
//I hold out my hand.
//I seize his hand, so big and rough.
//But warm
Kengo:
"The Little Buster are forever..."
But no, after they escape, it makes it even more poignant, at least for me.
I kept dying, over and over, trying to save Kyousuke and always fucking up.
And when I actually did save him, it felt as if I had saved the entire goddamn fucking universe.
Him showing up was such a great emotional scene and the credits rolling, everyone happy made it all the more better.
>>272964515
It took me the better part of half a year to play through P3 and P4, which was partly due to time constraints and partly due to needing to take breaks from the duller moments of the games.
But despite all that, I was still immersed in the games as they began to draw close to their conclusions, the subtle way they make you feel like a part of the world (like the background NPCs having stories that you have no influence over) leads to a satisfying pay-off. They didn't hit those childhood feelings of being absolutely enthralled by a game but they struck a cord with an adult me in a different way.
>>272965191
That's why I felt a mixture of happiness and sadness during the ending scene. Everyone involved in SEES has a level of bitterness and reluctancy about them and the ending brings closure to that as they're enabled to carry on with their normal lives again.

He's an idiot in all route.
There's a reason why he's called ''Master of Romance''. The guy's an idiot.
But see it from his point of view.
The guy is bored, just hangs around with a girl, forms a somewhat relationship with her and she has all this bullshit baggage about finding who she truly is, her public image and who she wants to be, and the guy just wants to be in a fucking relationship and doesn't know what to do.
Emi's route, other than her daddy baggage at the end, was well done because it felt very ''teenager like''. Emi felt the most like her age compared to anyone else in the cast except for maybe Rin.
Hanako, Lily and Shitzune could easily have been college girls in their 20s but you could tell Emi was clearly a teenager.
Hell, you don't even have to try so hard to be in a relationship iirc. You somewhat hint at it and she already jumps you.

>>272967884
I got that the central idea of Rin's route was about how we can have a hard time communicating our feelings to others, but I couldn't relate much to her as a character because of how offbeat she was. I could relate a little more to Shizune but there was so little substance to her route for me, so it was difficult to get invested in.

Rin is an offbeat character so meh.
If you can get into her wavelength, she's interesting.
And Shizune's route having so little substance is part of why it's good. The author wanted to make it bad. The route is shit just as much as the parts you're with her is shit because literally nothing is happening.
Being with Shizune is shit.
Being with her family is shit.
Having sex for the first time with her is shit.
Literally learning a new language and learning nothing other than she's a manipulative bitch who doesn't give a fuck about the people around her is shit.
And in the bad end, you leave her to her own demise, alone, thinking about why she's such a shit.

Hisao's usually an idiot, but he was the worst of all in Rin's route, by a wide margin. In Hanako's route, at least, both of them are being stupid and not communicating properly, and they have the same issues in getting through to each other, which made it bearable. Rin's route was more of Rin being pretty easily readable, and getting bogged down with pressure and deadlines and shit and Hisao being completely oblivious to that and trying to force his feelings on her at every point, with no consideration for how she feels. It was painful to deal with.
I think I liked Lily's route the best because it put the least focus on that sort of drama. It was a more open and direct route; less pussyfooting about and instead focusing on different issues.

Lilly had a good handle on her blindness from a practical perspective, but it took its toll on her personality. The angle of her route is how she always tries to appear to be cool and confident so that people don't worry about her, instead of expressing how she really feels. Lilly coming to terms with who she really was coincided nicely with Hisao coming to accept how his life had changed following him being diagnosed with arrhythmia.

It's lighter in the sense the First World War was less bloody than the Second.
Reiji is probably my all time favorite vn protag. Mad respect for that guy remaining in that line of work after all that shit with his wife. Fucking man of principle, and the world literally cannot stop shitting on him.
>>272973148
The Answer, in my view, was really unnecessary from a story perspective. It's a way of appeasing idiots who don't know a damn thing about subtlety.
However, from a gameplay perspective, I think that it was welcome, because it offered a challenge level that approached mainline SMT at times.
>tfwyeah it was a huge letdown but this part was well written
James
You made me happy.

Silent Hill 2, minus those weebgirls obviously.
>>272973268
Reiji was certainly a welcome change from the usual dumb student VN protagonist. He's able to keep his head when the situation calls for it (and providing you don't make the wrong choicse) but he's not infallible, which made him feel like a real person in a way that lots of VNs don't. He was balanced well by the supporting cast too, Yukari, Uozomi and Kyoko in particular.

I found Revelations' ending pretty strong, after following Ezio for three games and most of his life by that point.
>I have seen enough for one life.
>I am tired. I need to rest.
>>272973336
While you might be able to infer from P3's ending that MC died, nothing about that explains the meaning behind his act, or what became of them, which is what the Answer does.

that's the fucking point you ape nigger.
Tidus is a Celeb sports star who is a selfish whiner with dad issues who slowly overcomes his own faults and problems and becomes more than the shallow copy of the person he was dreamed from.
the entire, ENTIRE point of the game was his journey to true maturity and adulthood, him becoming more than just a dream of some other person.
FFX has the best character Arc, or at least one of the best character arc's in all of gaming, and its so gradual and realistic that it blows the mind.
people who point out how whiny Tidus is intially (and carry that mentality about him through the game) completely miss the fucking point, no shit he's whiny.
the game was Narrated in the first person past tence for a HUGE fucking reason, you dumbass.

I had a similar experience when I was reading letters my grandfather wrote to my mother.
For a minute it felt like he wasn't gone, and that I had actually known him.
I know it's a fact of life, but it's such a bizarre and honestly overwhelming feeling when you realize how many people have walked were you have walked, lived were you live, and have been through everything you have been through.

This almost sounds like Tales of the Abyss.

"When I was a young man, I had liberty, but I did not see it. I had time, but I did not know it. And I had love, but I did not feel it. Many decades would pass before I understood the meaning of all three. And now, the twilight of my life, this understanding has passed into contentment.
Love, liberty, and time: once so disposable, are the fuels that drive me forward. And love, most especially, mio caro. For you, our children, our brothers and sisters. And for the vast and wonderful world that gave us life, and keeps us guessing. Endless affection, mia Sofia.
Forever yours,
Ezio Auditore."

Didn't make me cry, but I did feel a bit sad. I mean, the story of Gears is fucking ridiculous and unoriginal. That being said, the bromance between Marcus and Dom was pretty well done. And this scene? This scene was fucking amazing.

For a macho series, Gears had its share of genuinely tender moments.

Colossal Cave Adventure. The very first text adventure game.
My dad was very supportive of me when I was growing up, and didn't care I would have rather played video games than talk to people. But even though my dad was a programmer, he never played any games, cause he saw that "they were addictive and I didn't want to get drawn into that with my addictive personality". But he did play ONE game. The text-based adventure game, Colossal Cave Adventure.
"I got stuck because a dwarf would always come out and then kill me, and I could never defeat him. But I found a secret passageway from the house into the cave, and then I found a dragon, but I couldn't figure out how to get past him"
For some reason, it always bugged me that he never found out the solution to the ONE game he played. But I also didn't know it was CCA or anything about text based adventure games. Eventually, I started doing research and asking around, and finally I figured out which game it was, and I decided "This is it. The one thing I'm going to do before I die is tell him how to beat the dragon in that old game!"
I start playing, and about 2 hours later, with 4 sheets of mapping of this stupid cave done, I finally found the dragon, and I figured out how to kill him. It's actually really stupid. You just type "kill dragon", and then the game asks you a sarcastic question. "With your bare hands?" If you say yes right there, you actually kill the dragon. When I finally found that out, I was ecstatic. I immediately picked up the phone and dialed my dad.
He never answered. He had died in his sleep. Apparently, the time of death wasn't even 10 minutes before I found the damn dragon.
He'll never get to know that all it was in the end was just a stupid joke.

> Weep, you girls. My penis has given you up. Now it penetrates men’s behinds. Goodbye, wondrous femininity!
I've read this before but I can't stop laughing
For years I've been rushing around, taking whatever I fancied, not giving a tinker's curse for those I hurt. Yet here I am... with riches and reputation, feeling no wiser than when I left home. Yet when I turn around, and look at the course I've run... here's not a man or woman that I love left standing beside me.
>>272975502Now you have a reason to meet him after death.

Fuck 'The Answer'. The whole game is about death and how we all must eventually accept it. To nail this point home, the game has protag almost die defeating Nyx, and then hold on just enough to graduate with his friends. Of course, fans of the game wanted 'closure' and couldn't accept that protag died (or his soul is in the seal or something, same thing).
>>272968261
5th anniversary is next year
>>272976771
The theme of the game may have been death, but it was unclear which aspects it would affect of the game. Each of the characters in the game dealt with death in some form or another without actually dying themselves. Claiming that because the theme is related that you should jump to conclusions is a bit much.
>>272941461
