>tfw back hurts from all this pc gaming
I'll stick to consoles from now on, thanks. You can't beat comfy couch gaming with a controller like it was intended.

are those intel HD graphics good for anything? what games can you run with it?
>>
>>271073467
I can run most games on medium-high at stable 30. They're actually very impressive with updated drivers, plenty to hold me over. I haven't encountered any games in my library that I couldn't run decently. I'm playing New Vegas right now and I get 30+ at max settings, though I guess that's not saying a ton.

Anyone that has bought a 970 have really bad coil whine? I want to get the Gigabyte one because I have never had an issue with their cards but I just keep reading about coil whine being pretty bad. And I would like to get one from Newegg with their whole, get a free game with the card deal.

Cleaning your PC is a fucking death trap.

>Do summer maintenance since PC is starting to slow down
>Reapply thermal paste, remove all removables and clean them with rubbing alcohol, blow out all fans with compressed air
>GPU dies, either because it's shit or because the motherboard socket is fucked, now I can play even less games than before
>no money for new GPU, no motivation to dismantle PC and install new motherboard, no way to find out which of the two I even need to do.

>>271072415
Yes, stop fucking asking.

>>271074456
that 500$ rig will let you play everything until now I guess, but invest in the gpu more
>>
>>271074456
not even worth it then, may as well get a console. Until you can max all games at 1080p at 60fps which should be the bare minimum for PC gaming then you should drop some cash

I understand that, I have a 4670k @ 4.2 GHz. I just want people to have a good idea of what AMD can do as well. Not to mention the PS4 and Xbone have 8 core CPUs, so newer games are actually going to use more cores.
>>
>>271082643
You don't need it.

You realize that your CPU fan blows air ONTO the heat sink and your exhaust is sucking said air out, right?

Too much effort. Had a 360 since 2008 and hasn't failed me once. And I'm a smoker. Yep. Blew nearly a thousand bucks on the thing just to realize I'm not really into gaming anymore.

I've actually gotten back into it a little since Rebirth came out, but still I feel bored/tired usually after just one run and have to take a break.

So if you're going to commit to a PC at least make sure you're going to enjoy it.

Guys, question here:

How cheap could I build a new PC that can run emulators and play my old vanilla WoW/BC servers? I don't need much, but my baby is dying.
>>
>>271082940
It's really a clusterfuck right now.

AMD has given up on improving Bulldozer because they got (heh) Bulldozed by Intel.

Intel's Skylake is really just a slightly faster version of what they have now with DDR4 support and lower power consumption for laptops.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it won't matter which CPU you run this generation's console ports on once games. With that said, Intel blows AMD the fuck out in terms of emulation and any sort of normal stuff a gamer will do. I wouldn't be surprised if you can run anything on Dolphin at 100% speed with Intel in a year.

Games prefer architecture and clock rate over core count.

If Intel finds itself getting outperformed at 8 cores or whatever, it'll release an 8 core CPU just to spite AMD.
>>
>>271076973

The Asus Strix also has this super silent feature.
>>
>>271084267
Consoles are the main deciding factor when it comes to video game design, for better or worse. Consoles games also have better optimization than PC games, even with DX12 PC games will still be less optimized. The PS4 and Xbone have 8 core CPUs, to opimize for that developers will learn to take advantage of all the cores they can to keep console games looking as good as they can, because graphics actually do sell games. This will carry over into porting console games to PC.

Consoles never have and never will be more optimized than pc games. Coding for a 100% documented API all developers go to school learning about is easier than coding to the shit console makers crap out.
If ports are unoptimized it's because they didn't even try but if they did crap PCs will run it better than consoles, most of the time.

So currently I've got a fairly old build. The motherboard (K9A2 Platinum), processor (Amd Phenom 9950), and RAM (8 GB, no idea what brand), are all from 2008. The video card is a bit newer (Radeon HD 6870, upgraded from a 4870 that I had when I first built it). The hard drives (320 GB primary, TB I added on when the first one got full) are pretty slow as well.

What's the first thing I need to upgrade? I get the impression that any CPU newer than this one isn't going to be compatible with my motherboard.

When it boots, does it read all 16gb whatever amount of ram? If not, then either faulty motherboard, faulty mem controller, or a setting in bios.

If it does read all the memory, then it is a setting in bios.

No it's not you fucking idiot. It typically takes 2-3 hours your first time because you're afraid you'll fuck up hundreds of dollars worth of parts because you have no experience with that kind of stuff at all and think it's complicated. Frying your shit isn't common and you really only have yourself to blame for failing to follow simple instructions.

After your first build you realize that putting together a computer really isn't all that hard or complicated and any future builds will probably take like 30 minutes, if that.

But I also believe there's nothing wrong with taking your parts to someone else to get them assembled. If you really don't feel comfortable making it yourself it's fine to get someone to do it for you. The only problem with that is they might do a poor job and you won't realize it because you still don't know what's even going on. Just be sure to use someone reputable and it shouldn't be a problem.

what would be a good cheap z97 board to get? i only went with that one because its cheaper and cant OC a 4590 anyway, so it saved me about 80 bucks in total savings from the mobo and cpu. also this is my first build, ill prob just get 8gb ram for now, and a smaller ssd for OS, Ive already got moniter/peripherals and HDD

It's not scary guys, what heppened to him isn't common in the slightest. If you feel like your mobo is going to crack, you're doing wrong. If you fried your mobo, you're a literal retard. Installing the cooler takes seconds, and cable management isn't even required, just a luxury.

I don't recommend people build PCs at all. If you're not 100% confident in your ability to handle very sensitive, very delicate, very expensive components that can have several thousand different points of failure, just fork over $50 and get it made by someone who won't fuck up.

It's that simple. It's how the world goes round. /v/ will be none the wiser, and you can just claim you built your PC (like everyone else here)
>>
>>271110301
It's a long shot, since I'm the only one who has this issue out of my friends. Manually update your driver. My GeForce experience was not detecting the new version at all, and once I installed the new driver it worked a lot better. Single player is still not perfect, but much better. Multiplayer is pretty good.

No, it isn't. 26 graphics options with a vast amount of customization in comparison to even other games that are considered to be PC centric, and a 260x can max it out 1080p at above 60 fps.

Inexperienced people have no business touching machine innards. Period.

Like someone said earlier, if you REALLY want to do this, familiarize yourself with a PC by fucking around with an old, unwanted machine.

Spending hundreds on PC components only to find out you bent the mobo, installed the standoffs incorrectly, shorted something out, bent a pin, misapplied thermal paste, etc... is something to avoid.

Step 1. Fuck around with an old PC
Step 2. Help out someone who knows what they're doing build a PC
Step 3. Repeat step 1 and 2 until you're comfortable
Step 4. Build your own shit

If you aren't absolutely dying for a new PC, you should wait.

If you have the best hardware on the market today, you'll only be able of running Crisis 3 on max setting at 1080p and barely hit 60fps. This isn't acceptable anymore. With affordable 144hz displays on the market today, you want to have at least 144fps to have a smooth experience.

Just wait for the next revolutionary step in CPU's and jump on that bandwagon immediately.

yeah they do, but it works half the time

Stuttering is the biggest problem, I get a solid 60fps, but the mouse lag and random stutters make it very annoying to play.

If you want a console killer, then bite the bullet and get something for $450 that'll perform better and do more, but be shitty in comparison to what it COULD be.

If you really want to get into PC gaming, scrounge around for $700 or more, and even then you're skimping. You'll make the money back with not having to pay for internet access for internet you already have, as well as with cheaper games.

It's not something that's going to happen every time you crack a PC open but I do 5-6 a week and it eventually gets to the point where you just sand the fuckers down because you know it'll save you some trouble in the long run.

Also make sure you get sandpaper suitable for sanding metal, and vacuum the shit out of the interior after you sand. You don't want that debris in there when you start building.
