I recommend the DS games, they have simpler mechanics due to being remake of the Marth games (FE1 and FE3) and a really solid level design based around that.

If you leave then to later, you can fall prey to the usual comments of "this lacks rescue and skills" or "I hate these graphics that aren't the GBA sprites".

This game would have been nice if enemy units did something other than wait for you, or charge wildly in (usually this). It's annoying if you are trying to raise weaker units, and laughable if you've deployed your best

At least one thing I can say for it is that it didn't have any of these stupid recruits where you basically have to blow the mission the first time to see what they want before replaying normally

Awakening doesn't have satisfying strategy. There's hardly any cool midbattle tactics, just stat wars. I like shit like FE10 where you have to burn supplies, split up, heal, free horses, steal shit, all in one level.
