Hey Anon, got any recommendations for innocent fantasy literature?
I love The Wheel of Time, and A Song of Ice And Fire is okay, but it's been ages since I read something which feels "pure" like LoTR and Shannara and the like.

I second this shit, even though I think it was kind of slow in the combat, at later points of the game I just wanted to finish because there was no point in doing all the sidequests because you were already strong as fuck when u reached the final dungeon, not to mention, the battles were sorta slow and animations couldn't be skipped, would play again if I could fast forward some stuff like in Chrono Cross, but other than that it's a great fucking game, the only one to give me that "BIG ADVENTURE FEEL" you really felt far away from home.

Oh and the final boss was sort of underwhelming IMO.

both of the new Fallout games were decent for setting up the Grand adventure

Fallout 3 by juxtapositioning the cramped dark Vault with the blinding and open outdoor world, and Vegas on the trek to Vegas itself (a bit of a slower burn but still a nice setup as an open ended 'tutorial segment' like the vault was)

i would say this game is a solid 8/10 but well, if you tried and didnt liked it maybe your demanding taste will only get settled once the new zelda/witcher/elders scrolls gets released

>>
>>270250706
It's not randomly generated, they generated it based on whatever numbers they had that digitized the planet. It's quite accurate.

Of course there are levels of detail, not shit. But you can zip around the planet in it's actual scale and it almost always looks great.

Correction

> There aren't enough games that feel like a grand adventure

Some have done it for me though:

> Level 5 is the best for this. Dragon Quest 8, Dark Cloud 1 and 2, Ni No Kuni.

> Zeldas. Especially OoT, MM, and WW

> Morrowind, and Oblivion in some parts

> Fable 1, while not perfect, did a pretty good job feeling like a grand adventure.

> Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. It may not be fantasy, but it sure as hell is a huge adventure.

> Pokemon. Crystal especially.

> Okami

That is all I can think of. My top 5 adventures would be
1) Dragon Quest 8, 2) Dark Cloud 2, 3) Zelda: Wind Waker, 4) Okami, 5) Zelda: Majoras Mask

RV Engine is straight trash, even Bohemia don't know what the fuck they're doing with that engine. Besides RV engine doesn't have the scale of Outerra in the slightest.

Outerra generates a whole planet. RV Engine generates a 250-450 m2 map, on which you can't max the viewdistance properly ( objects, shadows, the whole deal ) without having to deal with 7 FPS flat.

And i find that funny that you talk about the water in Outerra engine in such a bad way, when the one in ArmA 3 looks like an undistilled pool of shit.

Neither will a game that takes place in Gensokyo, where you play as a villager and will MAYBE get to see a youkai if they attack your village. There are more mods than that that make the world larger. You can get lost without the compass activated with just UL like that anon said though. Not many other large RPGs though, I think I've only ever been lost in modded Oblivion now that I think about it, as far as open world games go.

I can agree with that, I guess

The entire time he spent learning with the Adem ended up being pointless because as soon as he got back to the University he went back to being a huge cunt except now he knew swordfighting. Like, why make such a huge deal about how "we'll kill you if you don't learn this properly and instead come here for the wrong reasons" if they are just going to let him leave without changing his personality at all?

The 'mission' to go kill the thieves in the forest was actually kind of interesting but the whole side note about him fucking the incarnation of the moon was pure shit.

Might be just me, but I've been playing through Nostalgia recently and have been getting those sort of vibes. Main character wants to be an adventurer and find his dad, see new places, that sort of stuff. Also has you traveling around the world in an airship, exploring ruins, documenting various finds, etc. To be fair I'm not far enough in to personally say whether it's great or not (and the game does have you do some backtracking if you want to do jobs and build your adventurer rank), but it's doing a good job at having that sense of exploration so far to me.

Doesn't have to be developped by Bethesda, and it should of course never be a part of the main series.

They delved into other genres with Redguard and battlespire, and TESO as well, and who wouldn't want to charge the Imperial City as a commander with your army of thousands of Daedra ?

Wind Waker probably counts for a lot of people.

Morrownd gave me that feeling.

Dark Souls was honestly the closest thing to that for me.
>>
I know it's just a poorly disguised recommendation thread, but anyways ...

Games that actually felt adventurous to me:

Shadow of the Colossus
The Longest Journey
Genso Suikonden II
Final Fantasy I - IX
Ocarina of Time
Pokemon Red
Mystic Quest
Goof Troop

For some reason I don't get a real adventure feel from games like Morrowind or Gothic
even though I really like them.
Maybe they are too straight-forward or lack a certain ambiguity.

>>
>>270261413
Well, you only posted story focussed games with almost no exploration outside the mainquest, so I'd say to you an adventure is something with a clear and important task to you, like LOTR where Frodo gets the task to destroy the ring.

That's probably why you didn't think that TES 3 or Gothic were adventurous, because there was no such task, no purpose to explore the world around you other than your curiosity.
>>
>>270261782
Same.

The problem I find is what I want seems to change every month and I can't come up with a consistent and coherent game idea.
>>
>>270261465
I remember the first time I went through Darkroot Basin/Forest.

I was walking across that bridge by the waterfall and I just imagined what it would actually have been like to be there, in armor, lugging around your sword, just trying to make it through that world.

No one around but you, the waterfall rushing, no shitty game music, nothing. Just you, the scenery, and the knowledge that something was going to try and kill you soon.

What a lonely experience that game was. Even when you connected with other people, there still felt like there was a huge distance.

A real interactive story with game choices you hae to make yourself.

A complex, political setting a la GoT, where good and evil are hard to distinguish.

Responsive combat, which means that the movement of your mouse decides the direction your hits will go, and you will cut the enemy at the spot where you hit him, complete with the ability to dismember, parry sword slashes with your own sword etc.

Environmental magic, so you use the environment for your spells (like bending in Avatar)

Games try too hard to be grand by giving you larger than life goals and save the world type shit.

You know what the best adventure stories are? The ones where you have a fairly simple goal, and getting from where you are to your goal is half the challenge.

Shit like The Hobbit. It's one of my favorite adventure stories of all time. It's just, "We want to kill this dragon for personal reasons. Now let's get travelling!" And there's so much attention put into the simple act of travelling and the landscapes and all the creatures and shit that you stumble across, in addition to lots of incidental roadblocks. The goblins and trolls weren't sent out by Smaug to stop the dwarves, those were just some things they bumped into along the way.

Games just need to stop relying on "You are the chosen one, you must save the entire world from the brink of destruction while the evils are trying to stop you," and instead just let you explore and soak in a grand world on the way to something that's not necessarily world-saving or anything.

Start as a band of hedge knights trying to make a name for themselves by fighting bandits at night in the city docks.
Kill your first robber baron and gain fame.
Slaughter witches, heretics and demon worshippers while you roam medieval germany.

The only game where dragon fights are truly epic because the hardest part is tracking them down in their cave and where getting caught in the open field is practically a death sentence.

The only rpg where your party can get so old they have to retire and you can keep playing with a new generation of heroes-to-be.

Time passing as you played really did it for me. I felt like I was really living this guy's life, improving my abilities and learning more about everything as I did. Changing cities was also a pretty good idea.

On a sidenote, I love games where all the action takes place in a small amount of time, the character going from well dressed to ragged and tired. For example, Max Payne 3, Spec Ops The Line, Arkham Asylum, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, etc.

This and the original secret of mana are the only reasons I haven't completely given up hope on the Mana series.

If they got rid of that stupid world building thing and had a better designed battle system like you said, it would really shine.

I actually think nintendo should throw some money at se to get them to make a Mana like that but you spend time trying to grow the mana tree and small town around it, along with the typical adventure story.

Even make it a multiplayer thing where they fight monsters together.

That's what I find absurd.
No player can reasonably expect an open world to be full of things in every single place. Just like you can't go into a forest in real life and expect to find a treasure, hidden city or any other special stuff there. You can expect some animal or plant, but that's it.
Complaining about it is like complaining why something is as it is meant to be.
An open world needs to be empty in certain aspects. The fun about it is exploring and finding where is the special stuff, after all.

As someone else sort of said, It's one of the few games you can actually feel like you go out and have an adventure. You spend a whole day/night cycle traveling to a place you can see in the distance, be genuinely worried as night starts approaching, and carry a lantern and wade through the darkness to your destination.

Once you get a fuck ton of those waypoints though, and the small overworld starts being more apparent, it loses it's charm. Still the game did what it tried to do right in the short time it still worked.

Honestly the main thing i love about ME2 is that it tried to make planet exploration more varied. Removing MAKO was a stupid as fuck idea, but we got some pretty atmospheric sidequests (trying to get to the comm center of a ship that can fall at any moment, fixing solar batteries, factory with crazed robots, etc.). If only they've tried to fix mako instead of removing it.
