Why do you think Sakurai brought back Dr. Mario? I thought he didn't really want clones, although Dark Pit has Sakurai's bias for getting in.

Clones in this game are glorified alts that give Sakurai an excuse to pad out the roster. Doc is a bit of an exception as he is a veteran fighter and has more differences than the other two.

I hate how I keep having to point this out, but I don't think it's possible for them to be "skins" or "costumes" given they are each functionally different. Yes even the pathetic amount of differences Dark Pit has. It only works with the Koopalings and Alph because they are identical gameplay wise. To think people were also suggesting for Koopalings to become skins in Mario Kart 8 when they're all in different weight categories.
