I used to be a very good Leona player and stuck with her for about 3 years of play but I eventually (and painfully) realised she was complete garbage and has several huge flaws in how her character is designed

I don't think she's viable at a high level, even as a matchup character, most of her stuff is fundamentally flawed at worst or suicidal against common top tier picks (Basically doing any of her specials ever against Mr Karate except a reaction V slasher punish or an anti air moon slasher)

She is one of the characters that just doesn't really work in KOF13's system. She is my favourite character in the game, but I had to drop her because it was clear that she was a handicap to play.

I could go in a lot more detail about her issues but that would be a lot of effort and I doubt you care so whatever

Things Leona is bad at

>She cannot actually lock opponents down safely, so they don't need to deal with her mixups if they don't want to (protip: they don't want to and won't)
>She has to be closer than almost every other character to connect her st.b for combos
>All of her specials have too much startup to safely use, and some of them are punishable on a guard roll if used on pressure
>She has almost no hard knockdowns, and this means no safejumps, which is a massive handicap. Her one hard knockdown is from her raw overhead, from which she gets virtually nothing.

So her issues are basically this
>Her special moves cannot be safely used, especially against a Mr.Karate with a level 2 ranbu ready
>Her run slash, which is clearly designed as her 'lock down' move, is 0 on block. This leaves her at point blank range and forces HERSELF into a guessing game. This is made even worse by two facts.
First: Leona's fastest normal is 4 frames, and her heavies are very slow. Many good characters have 3 frame normals, which means Leona is GUARANTEED to lose in this situation unless she uses EX moon slasher, which is VERY risk
Second: Her other option here is to go for instant overhead, which is sadly not legit at all, because backdashing is a safe option that leaves her unsafe after the ioh, and also keeps you safe from a low.
So basically, Leona's lockdown move leaves her in the disadvantageous position.

And worst of all, what she is good at doesn't work in KoF13. Poking without combos nets no damage, and even V-slash reaction attacks are a lot of risk for not very much reward, and no okizeme afterward, so you can't continue pressure on hit.

Not really, it's probably the worst popular game in the series for that style of play.

You CAN definitely play lame, but you are going to have to eventually go in if you want to win, because anti airs/normals in that game generally do no real damage. In KoF13 damage = meter. If you didn't spend meter, you didn't do shit for damage, and you don't spend meter when you st.a someone out of the air.

Well, for team composition you've got a character that can be used in any spot and can act as a battery or closer (Kim) and a character that NEEDS lots of meter to be decent with, but isn't good enough to be a closer (Mai), so...?

My pick would be to go with a character that could play "Lame" and help you build meter, or sit back in the third character spot and blast people with EX Psycho Balls.

It doesn't help that she's also very very dense and either forgets that he likes her or just doesn't notice at all. It gets worse from there since Athena likes Kyo, but he doesn't really see her the same way, Kensou likes Athena but he's got the worst luck in wooing her, and Kula likes K but he couldn't give even the most miniscule fuck. The only characters that seem to have requited feelings for one another are Terry and Blue Mary, and Ryo and King.

Realistically if you want a viable team it should pretty much always be

1st: Not meter dependent but with a decent way to tack damage on if they get a lead
2nd: A character who doesn't rely on HD combos in order to do large amounts of damage so your 3rd character can ToD and end the game. You see a lot of characters with either retarded meter effeciency/damage in this position and can build it back quickly (Eg. Takuma or Chin style yes I did just 80-90% you for almost no meter, what about it?)
3rd: Someone who can kill with one touch because if you don't do it the other guy probably will

You can change it up a bit, and sometimes it works, but that's pretty much how team comp works most of the time, and the tier list reflects that somewhat

So I've only lightly played with some of the KOFs around the turn of the century (was more about Garou and Last Blade), I picked up '13 and I'm really liking it. I hardly experimented much with the older KOFs, just went with Fatal Fury. But now I don't seem to enjoy any of the Team Fatal Fury characters in 13, so I've been going with the Random Button for the past 30 hours.

The only character that I like so far is Mature (and to a lesser extent, Shen). There are still a bunch of characters who's style I don't really know yet, but I'm not sure who would compliment them or who else would be good for someone with only little experience in KOF.
