I think because it's main focus is fun and it's arts type doesn't try to be too realistic is why it has so much popularity. It isn't innovative or very hard, but can be somewhat challenging and going through and makes poker on battles seem less tedious as opposed to straight up grinding. Going through an adventure with animal like party members with little to no personality makes you use your imagination as to how they would respond, and given the manga/series they usually respond loyal towards their trainer, further increasing the sentiment and investment into your pokemon. It's a simple formula, one might argue that it's been repeated too many times but still remains fun.

It's designed to work for just about anyone.

Your team is what you want it to be. Your moves are what you want them to be.

You can catch them all or train a super team, or just go through the base game if that's your thing.

Pokémon was designed to welcome both the child who likes cute monsters and the 20-something that wants in on the competitive play.

I honestly don't understand it either, I think the games quality as an RPG is extremely questionable after all these years... and yet I cannot stop buying the games.

I would guess multiplayer, but there's hundreds of people that buy these games and the very idea of battling with another human person makes them quake in their boots.

I don't get what single player only people are getting out of a sub-par story mode like what we've had apart from B/W

I think it's a series that gets more fun if you start off from an earlier generation and start skipping some.
That way the games have a lot more differences that aren't drowned out by the same old routine.
They're all pretty solid though.

Because of the autistic fanbase that would buy any pokemon game no matter how shitty they are.

Seriously, the concept is great, the game is fun but it uses terribly outdated and sometimes downright terrible mechanics.

I dropped the series at Sapphire because it felt like a Silver rehash with some superfluous crap tacked on.

Also, the Pokemon designs were starting to go downhill.

im no scientist but:

-nostalgia
-in depth pet battling with large min-maxing potential
-lots of fucking stuff
-cool character designs
-multiplayer (most important part)

despite its flaws and nintendo's archaic online relations, its a good franchise

I played gen 1 and 2 back in the day and didn't bother afterwards; I guess I felt like I grew out of it. When X/Y rolled around last year my roommate convinced me to get one of the games along with him. It was certainly enjoyable in a nostalgic way, but it really is the same game underneath it all. I didn't realize just how much nostalgia carried the game for me until I played Heartgold a few months later; I enjoyed the fuck out of it, but that in itself kind of sealed the answer for me;
Pokemon is a nostalgia-based franchise. That may or not be okay for some people, but whatever, as long as you're enjoying it, it's all good.

You play Pokemon for three reasons: you're 12, you have a nostalgiaboner for Pogeymans, or you really really enjoy grinding.

I fondly remember how I got swept up in the Pokemania of the late 90s, but I just can't stomach the games these days. Random battles piss me off, and the games just feel like too much of a grind for me. Not to mention that they added a ton of new mechanics that I don't give two fucks about.

That's not true in the least bit. Even reviewers are quick to point out lackluster minigames, cases like X and Y with fuck-all for post-game content, and the feeling that Pokemon has been doing nearly the exact same thing for over a decade. It's still a very solid formula that has yet to really be fucked with so it still keeps it fun but just about everybody will point out it's a bit stale by now.
