I think Alph particularly stayed a costume just to show that it really doesn't make a difference wether the clones get their seperate slots or stay alt costumes (remember, Lucina, Doc and Pittoo were all alts originally, but were moved to seperate slots because why not)

And honestly, what difference does it make? If Alph got his seperate slot, he's have one moved altered a little bit and gotten more palette swaps, but that would be it

All three could have been scrapped to make room for more alts rather than playable characters with the same weight, ground speed, and air speed as their counterparts with minimal differences in attack attributes. Did you play Uprising on a regular 3DS? I'm playing through it right now on a 3DS XL and I've yet to experience any hand cramping in the couple hour long sessions I put into it at a time.

It wasn't quite as obvious in Brawl, even though Meta Knight got his own victory theme and was overpowered as fuck, because he was a different character with his own moveset

Pittoo on the other hand is just Pit, with slightly different specials, a reused final smash, and he got his own victory theme too which just makes Sakurai look that much more like a douchebag
