Criticism of Brawl is pretty well-founded and well-documented. It did very little to advance the series, and in most cases took steps back.

Rosalina was hardly ever at risk and she rarely had to play offensively always being one to bait out her opponents. It's not about offense or defense.
Competitive characters in Smash are all about rush down, the past smash games (even P:M) don't have multiple playing styles at high level play. It's all about different ways to pressure your opponent, however, Smash 4 has aggressive and defensive characters, just like any fighter.

It's alright. The thing is, Melee and Project M exist and those will always be seen as better competitive games. Plus, Brawl probably made people go back to Melee and squeeze a bit more development out of the mta.
