On this day, ten years ago, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was released in North America.

Even if you're not a fan of TTYD, just join in on the fun, and talk about the first two Paper Mario titles - the games that made the series notable in the first place.

Miyamoto made a little comment, but the sticker system was already in place at that time, at which point IS decided to go full retard. I think it was something like "We had the stickers for puzzles, but then we thought, why not use them for combat as well?"

That would still be a rip off I guess.

The sticker system is a breath of fresh air, but not even having a basic attack without having to use stickers is retarded. That and the only reason you have to fight is to get more coins to get more powerful stickers...
>>
I replayed TTYD game a month ago and really enjoyed it.

It's a great game with some excellent high-points but it's not perfect.

The large amount of backtracking kinda kills the momentum at times. I guess the developers had to artificially extend the gameplay to make it feel bigger then it actually is.

If you can stand the unnecessary padding though, the game will probably win you over with it's lighthearted story and charming cast.

That was easily the most retarded aspect of Sticker Star.

When I'm forced to fight common enemies due to a scripted event, I want to save my good stickers for Boss Fights, and not waste them.

>>267373959
No game is perfect imo, but I'd round my score to a 10/10, mostly due to how much of a cohesive package it is. It's really fun, lighthearted and charming as you said, with a touch of some dark tones, to not make all sunshine and rainbows.

On an unrelated note, Favorite Chapter? Party Members and such? In older Paper Mario threads I've posted my list here before. Rate, hate, etc.
>>
>>267374375

I really enjoyed Sticker Star for what it was, but if it was a Wii U game as opposed to a handheld game, I'd have been really pissed. It's really lacking the scope of the other 3.

Same here. Heck I found it more enjoyable than SPM, although some of the design choices were just really, really weird in PMSS.

It's hard to say what chapters are my favorites, since they all usually have great finales.

Anything with Magnus von Grapple is always great. I also enjoyed Keelhaul Island because it actually had a fleshed out dungeon that kept backtracking to a minimum.

As for my favorite partners? It's a tossup between Goombella and Bobbery. Goombella is extremely helpful whereas Bobbery is just a plain badass.

I only rented the original Paper Mario as a kid and got to some tropical zone before I had to return it. I never actually beat it so I can't comment on it.

Please Emulate the first Paper Mario game anon! You're missing out on a great duology! Heck. I can get you started with a ROM too, if you'd like.

But anyways, Magnus 2.0 was really funny for me. At the time, I was using Koops on it, and with just a single Defense Plus Badge, he literally tanks the entire Audience Canon Barrage with 0 Damage.

Keelhaul Key was also really nice. A lot of the dungeon is pretty atmospheric, and Cortez was great.

I liked Super Paper Mario for what it was.

Mimi's Mansion was probably the best part, up there with that gauntlet that gets nuked and the Under/Overwhere.

This pretty much. It's a Paper Mario Spinoff, but it's really good for a platformer.

>>
>>267380160
>going through mario's version of afterlife
It's the one thing from SPM that I disagree with in regards to a world building concept.

PM and TTYD already established that Mushroom Spirits exist. And that they can choose to ascend or not. SPM just throws it out the window and states that whenever you die, you turn into some Pixelated blob, and beg for a Queen to grant you access into above.

Ah, oh well. That's just my two cents

>>
>>267380685

If it's not perfect, it can fuck off.
>>
>>267380436
Actually, they did say through the game that the places you visited were different dimensions, in other words, there was nothing that directly connected underwhere/overthere to other areas.

Mario probably got sent there instead of turning into a spirit because he didn't die in the Mushroom Kingdom dimension, but rather, he was in Flipside.
>>
>>267381060

/v/, if it's not perfect it can fuck off and you'd better believe it's not going to be perfect
>>
>>267380727
Ah. Alright.

I personally want to save up for a factory sealed copy of all the Paper Mario games.

The first two games alone make it my favorite RPG series of all time.

>>267380786
SPM in general just has a lot of bleeding. Concepts clash as you progress through each level in the various worlds.

Flipside and Flopside as a whole are pretty tedious. It's jarring.

>>267381075
But don't the residents of the Underwhere/Overthere state that in no matter what Universe you died in, you'd always end up in one of those two locations?

Correct me if I'm wrong though, your insight might give me relief to this, in which I thought SPM just thrashed on established lore.

>>267381147
>>267381060
Ay. Dolphin is a good emulator, but it sadly isn't perfect.

>because I've yet to find General White and have taken a long hiatus from the game
General White is a massive douchebag. I personally doubt he even left Fahr Outpost.

But anyways, try this:

General White is a bit more difficult to track down. You may remember seeing him in Petalburg. Head there from the blue warp pipe beneath Rogueport and talk to the Koopa near the west entrace. He'll point you to Keelhaul Key, so head to the shantytown and ask Pa-Patch for another clue.

Return to Rogueport and take the blimp to Glitzville. If you inquire with the juice-shop owner as to General White's whereabouts, he'll receall something about a big tree. That means the next stop on your whirlwind tour is Boggly Woods. The first Puni inside the Great Tree will tell you that White went somewhere dark.

Make your way back to Twilight Town and talk to the villager standing in front of the inn. It seems General White isn't there anymore (surprise!), so drag your dejected self back to Fahr Outpost. While you're reporting to the mayor that you haven't been able to find White, you'll see the general step out of the house in the background! Follow the elusive Bob-omb back inside and wake him up (you'll have to give it several tries).

It was kind of weird, since they didn't say it specifically. Most characters would simply explain it through the 4th wall, saying how they got their 'game overs', even Luigi said something along the lines of people running out of extra lives.

In other words, it's a place for those whose games ended, instead of those who died. (You can comfirm this because there's mention of death directly during other parts of the game, without saying they'll go there.)

Still up to interpretation, because you can use game over as an euphemism for death or not.

Anon pls. Give me your reasons for Bobbery as being the most developed character.

I really liked the old Bob-omb too, but his entire deal with Scarlet and getting over his fear of sailing and such took only 1/3 of the chapter. After which, he just became a salty seadog.

Definitely not bad, but I feel other characters had more development, considering some even span across multiple chapters.

Exactly.

I don't understand as to why people complain about TTYD's backtracking when it's on the bare minimum of it.

Not to mention, at least IS tried to use backtracking as a benefit with the General White hunt for fun.

It gives the player incentive to go back to previous areas and see what they missed too.

Well, for starters, I can't tell if the list is based on usefulness, actual character development, or just personal taste.

If we're talking character development, People like Parakarry, Goombario, and Bombette belong is low tier (or even shit tier). Bobbery, Vivian, Ms Mowz and Goombella would qualify as God or Top tier.

It's a combination of all three, really.

Although, I don't see why Goombario would be low tier in terms of character development? His tattles throughout the game show off his little character quirks that never appear in the main game, as well as describe how he matured from a Mario fanboy, into someone who can pretty much stand beside Mario.

Some of his quirks include him wanting to crush, and potentially date all of the Mushroom Kingdom's "prettiest girls". Which is pretty gutsy for an 8 year old.

He also shows a ton of snark, that rivals Goombella in Dry Dry Desert, which is a stark contrast from his chipper persona back when you first started in Goomba Village.

Not to mention Goombario's Charge Ability along with Multibonk enables him to One-Shot bosses with ease, something I'm pretty sure Goombella can't do.

The same logic applies with Koops > Kooper as well, in terms of utility and character development.

If you gave those two most of your attention, they would reveal different sides to their persona. Something that I thought was a pretty nice touch by Intelligent Systems.

5th partner of Paper Mario: Fortune of Fear, Bloom.

She's met at Chapter 4 at her own home/dad's place of work, Juniper Junkyard.

Ever since the shroobs began their invasion, the chomps living in the junkyard that were once rather tame have now been going wild and causing all sorts of chaos! So when Mario and Co. arrives she requests for their help in exchange for allowing the group to look for the Prophet's Moon shard that ended up in the area.

If it wasn't given away by her appearance, Bloom here is a Boo-chanic. She works under her father Brooster helping to build and repair all sorts of new contraptions. The reason they're living in the junkyard though is that her dad always believed one man's trash is another's treasure, meaning that it'd be a goldmine for all kinds of neat parts. Formerly her dad had lived in Gusty Gulch, though he moved out when he caught wind of the "ghost gobblin' monster" Tubba Blubba being in the area.

Bloom's always had more of a fascination for martial arts than machinery (mostly from her mother Cherray's side, as she came from a region nearby Sammerland), so with the mechanical skills learned from her dad she's worked at building several prototype suits that she can use to battle like real martial artists, her most recent one being used for her final move Secret Weapon.

Her overworld ability is typical to that of most ghost partners, turning Mario transparent. Though it works a bit different, in that it only lasts for a few seconds, but it allows Mario to pass through walls and other objects, since he's not restricted to hiding in one spot. (Kinda like Boo Mario from SMGalaxy) She also has a secondary ability to repair certain objects or upgrade weapons with the right tools.
>>
>>267408093
CONTINUED
Moves:

Tool Box:
Digs through her box of supplies, tossing objects of varying damage backwards at an enemy. The chances for more damaging objects to be thrown increases as she levels up.

Hide Out:
Turns the party transparent for one turn, allowing Mermor or Mario to attack if she uses this move first. Costs FP to use.

Weld-o-Wisp:
Pulls down her goggles and grabs out a welder to damage all enemies and cause a burn with a successful action command. Costs FP to use.

Secret Weapon:
Brings out her samurai mech suit, knocking the front-most enemy no matter their position into any enemies behind it for massive damage. Costs a lot of FP to use

A Star Spirit on Ice is my favorite level in PM64 due to how atmospheric it is, and how nice the puzzles are.

I could go on and on about how I consider the ice palace and that entire chapter as the pinnacle of what makes Paper Mario such a fantastic game to soak one's self into, let alone play.

>>267412967
>Snow level was so cozy

The villages and trail leading to the palace definitely were cosey, but fuck after that it was anything but...but for brilliant reasons:
>dat theme
>dat moment you realize the glass wall at the back isn't a mirrorr and it hasn't been your reflection
>dat suprising low amount of enemies that results in you fully taking in the scope, size and overall discomfot of the place

It's been a long time since I've found a 10/10 snow/ice section. The ice palace in A Link Between Worlds finally ended that draught though.

I remember being so hyped to play this, one of the few games that I have ever bought brand new. I've replayed it so many times. I liked Super Paper Mario, not as much as the previous two though, the dialogue kinda redeemed the gameplay for me I think.

Same.

They were a "Break" in the formula of a Mario RPG game. But it was done in such a unique way that it is the most memorable for all of us.

Plus, the pipes in the "Mario Brothers" that came after "Donkey Kong" resembled the underground sewers of New York City. So he became a plumber.

I don't recall any wacky glitches in TTYD, ones that had little to no purpose, and to only cause frustration onto the player.

Backtracking is more in line with level design. Perhaps they were pressed with time when making TTYD? I mean, looking back, the Gamecube was struggling in markets not named Japan, so.

Honestly, right now Nintendo's at this bad point where their console has a gap of ability for backwards compatibility. The Wii U doesn't have GCN support, and can only get by with the N64 due to the Wii Mode.

They have the potential for the best library of the consoles, so I don't get why they haven't focused on making a system that has access to everything again. Even selling GCN games on the eShop to work with the new Smash controller would do wonders. People are easy to sway. They would buy them in a heartbeat if they were fairly priced.

I just want them to continue this series in a respectful fashion. No B-teams, no pressures from higher ups, and no worries about a game being "too TTYD".

IS only did codemonkey work on Sticker Star. Vanpool was the developer.

To be frank, they're more talented as a while than IS when you consider what they made as Vanpool, at Love de Lic, and at Square.

So I hated Paper Mario 64. Will I hate any of the other ones any less?
>>
>>267440660
Unless you explain why, I'm not sure how to answer that. The Thousand Year Door is similar in gameplay and story, Super Paper Mario is a platformer, and Sticker Star is a simplified version of PM64.

Well... I didn't like the design. The new characters introduced. I felt like everything was babied down and very amateur when it came to design. I'm not talking about the whole "paper" gimmick. I'm talking directly about the characters and monsters.

TTYD is a little more "grown up" from a design aspect. Rogueport and the Glitz Pit are both pretty gritty, and the story's a bit darker, while not being too edgy. The gameplay's a bit more involved, too.

fuck yeah i played the SHIT out of this game. i swear i must've finished it like 10 times by now. it was so fun playing through it with my sister when we were kids we would take turns in overworld vs battling. so many great memories from this game. the greatest feels were evoked within me when i heard the rogueport them in the paper mario medly in smash bros 3ds. still remember unlocking literally everything and finishing off bonetail.

I'm not really one to argue against points, since your opinion is fine and all, but in Chapter 3 it's revealed that Bowser has a minion so loyal that he was okay with his own heart being separated from his body in order to become invincible.

I'd say the design aspects are very deceptive in its cartoonish world. Even moreso with TTYD.

And like >>267441545 said, Rogueport is definitely an oddity when it comes to the Mario world since it's essentially a gritty port of sailors and treasure hunters, all who went there in order to find the treasures of the city underneath. It attracts the seedy, the adventurous, and the people out for a quick buck. The team worked pretty well in giving them life, too.
>>
>>267381075
Mario didn't even die. Dimentio's just a teleporting illusionist. That's why he and Luigi were fine in the final chapter despite Dimentio pulling the same thing again.

Then funny thing is I had hype for Sticker Star, ignored every review I read, bought it instantly, and my hype immediately went away when I first opened the game. All I did was hear the music, and I knew just from the drastic change from God-tier to god-awful music that the game was going to blow. I played it for 30 minutes and realized I should've believed /v/. Anyone else get a boner kill from the music? Or is it just me? It feels like most 3ds games are lacking musically.
>>
>>267454459
Exact opposite, actually. We've agreed the music is Sticker Star's most redeeming element.

I want a return to cool secrets.
Here's my idea for a world in the next paper mario.
>completely optional world/chapter that's seperate from the main areas where you find one of the seven story items.
>To reach it, you have to get to the bottom of the pit of 100 trials and beat the pit's boss.
>Make the pit accessible from the minute you start the game, its just cleverly hidden so you won't get into it without hearing a hint from an NPC who's further on.
>Even when you beat the pit, the entrence to the secret world is also really well hidden. If the player leaves before discovering it, they'll have to do the pit over again, even the pit boss.
>Make one NPC in the game do a joke about a secret world, but do it in a way so the player doesn't even think about the possibilty of an entirely secret chapter.
>the secret chapter would also technically be acessible at level 1
>Upon doing the trick to unlock the hidden chapter in the pit boss room, have an odd looking pipe appear.
>When you go through the pipe, you arrive in what appears to be a small jungle clearing.
>The partner you have out will wonder where you are.
>upon walking down the sole path, you'll find a small shack.
>Once you step inside, the camera stays outside, giving you a shot of the shack.
>Text appears on screen
"Is that you Mario my old rival? It's been a while since we've last seen each other."
The camera suddenly changes to an inside shot of the shack, and you're greeted by the sight of Cranky Kong rocking in his rocking chair.
"So what brings you out here to DK Island?"
conversation with cranky ensues where he asks if you're on a newfangled adventure with some whippersnappers, does his usual boasting, and remarks how he could do it better than you.
while he's talking, kremling pirates invade DK Island and begin causing a ruckus.
Secret chapter officialy begins
Would you play?
>>
>>267462821
Couldn't mention because of character limits.
Chapter climaxes in a fight against K.Rool on Gangplank Galleon
Once you beat him, Cranky thanks you for your help, and you see mario say something to him.
"Whuzzat? You say you were expecting some great treasure at the end of this? HA! Back in my day a secret world was reward enough, and I would have done it at level one too!"
He gives you nothing except for a shortcut that you can use to get between DK Island and the main hub area.
>>
>>267463928
mite b cool
>>
>>267463928
And for the truly skilled
If you manage to get to DK Island at level 1, Cranky Kong's boasting dialogue is replaced with respectful dialogue.
"Yep, its you alright. I imagine you're teaching those whippersnappers how we used do things in the older days huh?"
If you beat K. Rool at level 1 Cranky's ending dialogue is also changed.
"Whuzzat? You say you were expecting some great treasure at the end of all this?"
rather than telling you off, he begins to think.
"Hmmm...well my grandson IS on vacation... that's it!
"I've decided I'll come along with you, seeing you in action poured some new youth into me!
Cranky Kong joins your party.

Honestly, I think Ninty is just spread too thin at the moment with what ideas and concepts they need to do.

The Wii U probably doesn't have these features yet, because other staff members are working on maintaining and enhancing the Nintendo Network and whatnot.

Also,I think porting N64 and GCN games to the Wii U require a decent amount of manpower to make them suitable for consumer use.

I mean, if I'm not mistaken, Virtual Console games specifically for the Wii U have had some of their controls changed to accommodate for the gamepad?

The N64 and GCN Paper Mario games would also need to be reworked in terms of buttons as well. Unless they do a straight port, like they did on the Wii Virtual Console.

I'm on a semi toaster, can I play Paper Mario, and what 64 emulator is best? I want as much accuracy as possible, and if there's any audio popping or graphical issues I'll just look at getting a copy.

I was able to emulate Paper Mario on my semi-toaster from 2003.
(Windwos XP, P4 2.3Ghz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 4- something)
I downloaded the ROM and PJ64 from KaZaA and didn't change any settings, ran fine as a window in 640x480 or whatever it defaulted to, had some weird flickering in Toad Town and when pausing but otherwise it ran fine.
