why do japanese devs like completely neglect the PC?
I mean when was the last time you saw a PC exclusive from Japan other than indie stuff or ugh those "Visual Novels"?
PC never took off there because japan made their own non-MS-based computers. when they died, developers mostly moved to consoles.
they don't really make any PC-exclusive high budget games... but who does anymore? there's lots of strategy games and shit that are PC-exclusive, but they never get translated
Why are they even considered as video games?
I know Im not to judge what a video game should be but
but it was almost no gameplay at all, the hint is in the name "Visual Novel" not a game its more like watching anime or reading a book
They view the PC as a business device, and if you're playing games on it, a porn machine. There's a very small market for PC games in Japan, the exception being visual novels. In Japan PCs are boring boxes that people use at work, and that a few weird nerds obsess over at home.
Because there is no money in making PC games for Japan. Japanese games just would not sell on PC, period, and even in the west PC players wouldn't buy them because most people don't play Japanese games that often have little to no marketing thrown at them, or that don't have a western appearance/style like Souls or MGS. Even Japanese developers like Falcom that were extremely dedicated to PC and developed exclusively for PC had to abandon it.
>Japan is mostly arcades and consoles
>from what I hear Korea however is mostly PC games, even though they are mostly F2P cash shop or MMORPG games and almost nobody owns a console
How can 2 counties that are pretty much neighbors be so different
played a lot of porn games when I was in my teens. but then I found Utawarerumono, its a VN however its also a turn based strategy game, simple in execution, not as deep as Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics but fun nonetheless.
holy shit the VN really made me feel for all the characters, to this day I still feel I grew a strong connection to all the characters in that VN, so even though it has little gameplay it convinced me that plenty VN's are games, most of us just dismissed them simply because we are unaware that alot of them also have gameplay.
Because visual novel doesn't really mean anything.
It can be anything from Umineko which is like a billion hours long and don't have any kind of interaction at all until the very end (which isn't very much and it doesn't really do anything), to Rance, or other gameplay heavy VNs.
They're warming up to it. A few big franchises coming to Steam:
Final Fantasy series
Resident Evil series
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Maybe it'll be a more viable platform them in a couple years, op. Then we won't have to bother with consoles at all barring Nintendo.
>tfw still no Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
>being xenophobic in video games
according to history and anthropology, if I remember correctly xenophobia is prevalent in island nations like Japan and such
but really, do they have to be like that when playing video games?
how xenophobic is Japan anyway,
They're now warming up to it because its growing in japan, they're warming up to it because consoles are shrinking in japan while its still slowly growing in the west. The PC market is pretty big in NA and EU and thats a lot of extra money for them to make to cover up for the lagging sales in japan.
If square had charged $25 for the FF13 port and did a proper job with actual resolutions and replacement of textures with hi res ones, i guarantee you it would sell a lot better than releasing a lazy ass port for $15.
because too many people steal shit on pcs and the japanese want to get paid and have it not stolen by neckbeards such as you op.
>hurr durr if they just made better games it wouldnt happen
or anything else I havent thought up of yet.
Well to be fair the japs fucked them over during one of the world wars and abducted hundreds of thousands of them as slaves and their refusal to leave Korea after the war cause the Korean War killing even more.
but they are one of the main export countries of smart phones and their internet is one of the fastest in the world and such
because they've spent the better part of humanity's history killing each other and never got over it
also japan got boosted by the US occupying it while South Korea got neglected by the US occupying it
same as europe. but the hate for each other has settled down for a bit because of all the 3rd world scum they let into their countries. so now the hate has been focused on them.
but with inhumane working hours
taking that back i'm not sure why japan turned out to be more relevant on the world scene, maybe korea would have if they weren't fucked over by the split
Yeah, that's what I meant by 90s japan.
In the 90s japan was the technological centre of the world, phones, robits, cars, whatever the best shit was in japan. Now South Korea has like all of the big phone companies, 2 of the 3 main display manufacturers and samsung is making a name for itself as a competent semiconductor firm as well.
Doesn't matter, both those countries will be gone soon. Some of the lowest birth rates in the world and the highest rate of sudoku among developed nations.
Many Japanese players don't care for PC games because the PC's in most houses are old as shit, huge as shit, cumbersome and weak, and used for work. Alternatively, trendier students and younger workers use laptops, which are still too weak for the thousands of hideously optimized PC titles from the west.
Consoles are the known game box. If you wanna play some games, you get a console. If you want temporary mindless entertainment on the go, grab that phone and download that casual game app.
Those hikki's who buy swathes of games are extremely varied also make high-tier rigs, but it's commonly seen as this "nerd" thing to do, considering you'll get nothing but VN's, Dating Sims (Also for fujoshi in many cases), doujin games, and horribly translated, horribly optimized Western games.
You couldn't take two seconds to simply think and come to the conclusion that the PC gaming market isn't very big in Japan? No, you had to make a thread and be passive aggressive about it like a true mustard race.
That's not the point, the point is every FPS to them is "shitty and casual" because of a few bad apples.
The genre that's immensily popular - easily the top three of videogame genres - in the west has completely no hold or ground in Japan. Was there even a single FPS made by a japanese company?
At 75% of replacement, Japan's population should drop by about 30 million over the next century.
They'll probably loosen immigration restrictions before anything like that happens, though.
Korean guy here
yes, Koreans hate the japanese a lot
I mean fuck, they royally screwed us up in every sense of the world
and big issue lately is the top japanese politicians going to Yasukuni shinto shrine where all those japanese war criminals are buried, think of it if Germans going to graves of nazi war criminals and paying respects to them and such
but Wii and 3DS and such are selling better here
you guys would be interested that we in korea have these "PC arcade centers" which how I would translate it in English
"PC rooms" are pretty much where most people go and play games in korea
think of it as arcade places but all the machines are desktops like in the picture here
people here mostly play LoL or as you guessed, Starcraft
lately like me, people have discovered Steam and all those PC games other than your typical F2P MMO cash shop games so often I can find people using steam time to time
FPS are generally mindless and flavorless, and in the West, it's rare you'll pick up an FPS that had a memorable, or even likable aesthetic. Most Japanese fans like recognition of characters, settings, and visuals. It's hard to tell CoD, Battlefield, CS, etc apart from one another.
Splatoon might change this, but it'd be a console Japanese FPS.
>when was the last time you saw a PC exclusive from Japan
Sometime in the 80s when NEC, Sharp, and MSX were a thing, some of their stuff was put on Commodore. Koei, Square, Konami, Falcom and others did plenty of work for computers then the mid 90s happened. Sharp dropped from the PC market, NEC started fucking about with new PCs that had jack shit for GPU, MSX fell off the map, and Compaq invaded with their cheap business computers and Windows 95 that had standardized formatting for the japanese language.
Ever since then computers have been viewed as a salary man/secretary tool instead of a hobbyist thing. It's been getting a turn around in recent years and Koei and Falcom never really left PC but Falcom did make a statement that sales weren't the strongest for them and been were in a big decline at one point while Koei just got lazier with each release of Romance or Musou on top of keeping them in the Asia territory. It also didn't help that they were still sticking to pure physical and mail orders instead of looking at other distribution methods till recently. Another issue was that either a company wouldn't in the case of Koei or no one would approach Falcom for localizations of some games. There could also be some ignorance, arrogance, or hatred for the west that's just unspoken but who can say.
I...wasn't disagreeing? Japan isn't the only country with xenophobic blankey mindsets towards foreign games. America is especially retarded with how literally every Japanese game is considered bad until it has heavy advertisement behind it.
yeah, pretty much this
still SC2 is where most have transferred to now
yeah, well I dont play LoL
I wanted to try but a buddy of mine here said it will fuck up your life, so I didnt touch it
I think Japs see FPS games as more of an arcade thing. Half life and Counter Strike both of arcade adaptions and a lot of their light gun games play as faux VR FPS games . See
>All those fucking desktops
how fucking huge would the electric bills be for those places
How much is it to spend a day there? Or do they charge by the hour?
We had one of those in my town but it wasn't popular enough and so it had to close down. The people who ran it were way too generous. They had a snack bar and stuff but would give out free food and drinks to their workers and their friends if they showed up, and the prices to play on what was about fifty top tier rigs or any 7th gen console with a very large selection of games to choose from was just cheap as fuck.
Really sad they went out of business, but they weren't being Jewish enough to stay in business simple as that.
>That gundam game
>Literally NEVER coming outside of Jap'n
Yes, they charge it by the hour
it really depends on which area on how much they charge you for an hour
like where I live now is about 1 US dollars per hour that is kind of the average price
but in cheaper places its about half of that per hour
man, that is a real shame to hear that place shutting down
free snack bar was indeed really generous, even here they dont do that
But they're not. The PC doujin scene is huge. The only problem is most of the games don't get translated or get released outside of Japan. Other than VNs, 2hu, and other anime stuff most people outside of Japan don't know they exist, so demand for them is limited, and since demand is limited most devs don't even consider releasing in other regions. Which is a shame because of a lot of those games look really fun
Talking about Korea
well north korea
all them birds man, all them birds and snow
no, I get steamrolled in Starcraft whenever I play it friends, I suck shit at RTS in general
yes, shamefur dispray, all that
as for the japanese, should I still hate them? I mean its history and it happened 60 years before my time, and some japanese dudes i met before were pretty chill guys who liked to play video games with
Multiple reasons. For one you're foreign, and girls always dig foreigners.
Second you have a big dick. To them. Seriously, if one stereotype is true it's that Japanese men end up on the small side on average, so even if you aren't loaded you're probably above average.
Third girls doing things to piss off their parents is the second oldest tradition in history. Lots of older people in Japan are still quite xenophobic and pretty much all of them even if they don't hate foreigners don't want their daughters dating or marrying anyone who's not Japanese.
Fourthly, a lot of Japanese men are either uninterested in real women whether it's because they're married to their work or married to their body pillow.
So yeah, lots of reasons for that being the case.
I guess I have to agree about Nexon and NCsoft on being cancerous
shit, you thought EA was bad for all the shills and jewing?
those fuckers try to lure you in and make you buy overpowered items in real money and break balance all the time
for example, nexon made a deal with capcom somehow and made a Street fighter 4 game on android
but they dont give a rats ass about balancing, making people buy badges for characters to make them stronger and upgrade those badges to break balance even further
so more money you spend on it you win
Pay 2 win in every sense of the word
in fucking Street fighter 4, jesus christ
Its a culture thing; Japan was and still is all about social connections; it's why games like monster hunter rely almost entirely on local party play.
PCs don't have the same kind of social connection for them and so they never really made the jump from handheld/consoles to the PC market.
japs aren't too big on pc gaming, since pcs take up alot of space in their 1 room hovels
plus most jap associate PCs with western gaming and shooters
they also have awful taste in vidya hence why sony is dominating in hardware sales
Speaking of jap games and PC, regardless of what I think about the game as a whole Dark Souls 2 is one of the few actually good jap PC ports I've played. Anyone have any non VN jap ports they've played that were good?
Most PC games are English, and most Japanese gamers have bad Engrish as well, which is why they stick to VNs and eroge, since most of them are in Japanese.
Japs could play games like STALKER, Deus Ex, VtmB and whatnot, if they had a Japanese translation.
