Because the turn-based combat was always meant to be a stand-in for real-time action, since the old hardware couldn't cope. Now that we can, they've tried to marry turn-based and action a lot of different ways, and none of them have worked particularly well. In the end, what needs to happen is JRPGs need to take the same route as Kingdom Hearts and Resonance of Fate, blending player skill with stat building.

combat is a huge problem in jrpg evolution, if more of them took influence from more recent games like the souls series, and dragons dogma as how to approach evolving their genre, we'd see a lot more praise and probably more success.

Jrpgs usually followed what popular anime was doing.

So in the 90's you had shonen tropes. Now? Moeshit. Just look at stuff like Neptunia, the blatant waifu pandering in FFXIII and its spawn. What few games that may be good are dragged down with design decisions so poor it boggles the mine(NNK, BD).

Not at all, and you're right. But when it comes down to it, the original reasoning behind turn-based combat was that they could not, with the tech they had to hand, show exciting 4-player party combat. As we've seen with XIII and probably with XV as well, that's still looking pretty tricky. I think Resonance of Fate was a rare game to get individual control of your party members right.

I'll be buggered if I can recall the interview it stemmed from, but one of the original programmers for FF said that they would have done action combat if they could have, but used a turn-based system since there was no way for them to effectively implement a party-based combat system with the effects and all on screen. I might actually be talking out of my ass(thanks a lot, alcohol), but I swear I remember reading about this shit. I'm not saying we should dismiss turn-based systems entirely, as FF8 and Lunar SSSC are among my favorite games of all time,.but the system does feel dated, and I'm not sure if clinging to it because it works is the best way to proceed.

There's only one thing that I don't like about Ni no Kuni that makes me horribly depressed.

I love the whole wizard book aspect of the game where you have to reference the book for clues and solving puzzles, but I hate how bright and static it is. Whenever I read it, I can see all of the floaters in my eyes and the eyes cloud the text and make it hard for me to read.

I use a background theme on 4chan and every other game I play is dark enough that I never notice my floaters. It's just really obvious when I play Ni no Kuni.
