So... how's that game coming up /v/?

I hope you're using unity or game maker.
>>
>not coding the engine by hand

Carmack would be disappointed.
>>

but carmack is a hack.
he can't do art or music and he can't into game design that isn't a FPS.

Its going nowhere, just like your thread! OH SHIT GET FUCKED NERD

I completely agree with you.

sorry m8, I just need to change the art and is 99% done.

I kinda put all my unity projects on pause and started fucking around with RPGM. Wrote a couple of scripts and all.
Wish I could draw for shit though. ;_;
>>
>>266134708
depends.

you can go the easy route which is Game maker + SNES sprites + Midi music/sounds.

In the easy route you follow a tutorial on youtube.
Generally you could make your game in one day that way and have fun.

The hard way is to learn proper coding, music, art and do it on unity.
>>
>>266134959
the scale is really fucked up for this map.
are those supposed to be trees or bushes?
>>
>>266134959
>can't into art
why not edit the RTP on photoshop?
>>
>>266135067
Tress. That's how standard sprites in RPGM work.

>>266135131
I do edit some of the stuff from time to time, but sooner or later I will need my own art, which I most probably won't be able to do.
>>
>>266135019

Well, time is no issue, I'm about to be fired. I guess learning cod would be a good idea but I want to catch up. I might be downloading Game Maker and give it a try
>>
>>266135369
why not steal from SNES games?
terraria did it.

>>266135475
problem is, learning one skill takes years, let alone several of them.
>>
>>266135369
Then don't use standard sprites. they're awful.
RPG Maker has billions of free resources starting from RPG2k.

Because now it's hard to tell if your map is supposed to be an overworld or an actual exterior map for a forest. characters would be bigger than the fucking trees and that just looks awful.
>>
>>266134959
RPGM is a great tool for making RPGs but for some reason rarely anybody makes something worthwhile.

Maybe because of how easy it is to fuck up.
>>
>>266135658
>why not steal from SNES games?
Because it's a mark of low quality and usually ends up looking terrible.
>>
>>266135658

Because I want to have a bit of originality. I'm sure most my vidyas will be shit but i wan them to be original shit
>>
>>266136014
RPG maker in itself is a mark for low quality, don't kid yourself.

some people shit on game maker, but since the studio version, it has become a very viable engine, specially for 2D.

and even before that, it was being used to make great games such as hotline miami and barkley's shut up and jam.

I guess people like shitting on things just because they're easier to use and more practical.

anyway, its coming along fine, barely recognizable from what I had a few months back. I think I'm making real progress, with polishing, bug fixing and overall making the game better. and I only have to alter some of the NPCs dialogue before I can call it an "early alpha" and start distributing it for people to review.
>>
>>266135658
>why not steal from SNES games?
If it's just sprites, I might steal some. But I need some specific sprites that I doubt I will be able to find and some specific face art and some CGs.

>>266135678
Yeah, I know. It's technically a place holder for me to test out scripts. I'm planning on replacing all or most of the sprites with time. Right now my goal is to make proper scripts that I can freely use throughout my whole game and build around everything else around them.

>>266135992
It is quite easy to fuck up, but it mostly depends on how you build your core. If the core of your game/idea is flawed or half assed, then everything else will be the same.
>>
>>266135992
there are some great rpg maker games, from my memory are yume nikki, that horror game about an art museum, ahrimans prophecy.

I think this is the best rpg maker game:

Because I have no clue on how to make a game. Complete turd on coding, programing, art design, music.. you name it.

I'm probably worse than the kickstarter "idea guy".
>>
>>266135992
>some reason rarely anybody makes something worthwhile

Because RPGM is quite clearly made for JRPG fans with no good ideas or sense of how to actually make a fun game, and that is exactly the audience it attracts.

You certainly can do great stuff with it, but the number of creative people who are capable of producing nice things AND who also like JRPGs is very tiny.

I just submitted a form for Nintendo dev license so hopefully I can migrate my stuff soon because fuck Google and their anti privacy policies.
>>
>>266136615
You know as well as me that this is an exception.
And yes, it clearly is the engines and editors fault because the barrier to enter is so low, that even your pet could make a game with it. which is why 99.9% of the released games are absolute garbage.

there are some great games for it, though.

Being a programmer is suffering
>>
>>266136615
While it's true that you can make great games with RPG Maker, that doesn't stop it from being the mark of a bad game.

If the bad games made with it vastly outnumber the good games, then what the engine CAN do doesn't matter, because the fact of the matter is that almost any time you encounter a game made with you, you can pretty reliably expect it to be a bad game.
And that is why it is not unreasonable to expect a bad game if it's made with RPG Maker.

The same thing goes for Unity, I'm so tired of seeing people arguing about this. Unity isn't inherently bad, but it gets used to make a lot more mediocre games than good games, so it is reasonable when encountering a Unity game to assume that it is a mediocre game before playing it. It's not about what people can or can't do with it, it's about what people DO do with it.
>>
>>266137438
If I'm going for shitty art, I'm going to draw it myself. At least then I'll have some dignity left within me. But that's a last resort.

I'd like to add on to this:
If you hear "RPG maker game", what is the first thing that comes to mind?
Yume Nikki or Alex Quest?
For me it's Alex Quest because that's the majority of rpg maker games.
>>

>>
>>266138195
>you always seek the most efficient way to get the most work done
No, I've heard this many times before and it's a load of shit.

Lazy programmers don't always seek to most efficient way to get the most work done, they seek the way that requires the least effort, which usually means avoiding actually researching the problem properly to see if anyone has already found an optimal solution to it, avoiding learning new things as much as possible because it takes time and effort, and more often than not doing things the shortsighted and wrong way instead of the proper way, because doing it that way is easier in the short term.
