Is it just me, or is the gunlance gameplay actually clunky and a little too tanky?

Switch Axe, Hammer, and Sword and Shield are what I enjoy most, but I've been wanting to try gunlance for a while and just have. I feel like I could just tank shit with the shield rather than dodge, but I don't want to do that. The lack of any maneuverability makes me feel like I'm pigeonholed into that kind of gameplay

When I first fought Peco in MH3U, I had absolutely nothing for dealing ice damage. By chance, a friend was helping me with tanzia quests and pointed out that I should harvest in Tundra. I went to Tanzia and did the * Tundra Harvest Tour. Got enough mats to make a frozen core. Came back to Peco and kicked his ass. Felt good, too.

Gunlance shield-tanking faggot here, solo'd all of G rank in MH3U. Guardlancing and tanking is super viable and you can get good kill times.

I use a mixed Agnaktor Z set with Guard+2, Guard up, Mind's Eye
and either bombardier (lol dios weps) or artillery master as a catch-all for everything. Don't just turtle, you get right up in the monster's face and attack constantly and quickly blocking when you need to, the gunlance can actually combo into a block with the up-pokes. With guard skills you can almost anything (literally everything with dash juice) and unlike dodging you can position yourself to attack the monster and never leave that area.

I actually forgot how challenging was the low rank Qurupeco, you have access to shitty weapons so I had to settle with the hammer which is the best choice for that fight (either that or the horn) so that my weapon didn't bounce at every attack.
And then the smartass has the great idea to fly away at the exact moment when the paint bomb loses its effect. I also forgot the quick path to the resting area so the fucker got extra time eating and sleeping, at the end got the asshole and the giant Jaggi (desert)

Uragaan is easy shit since you can just trap him and barrel bomb his chin to kingdom come. Once his chin is gone he's pie.
Agnaktor isn't too bad. If he dries out then just wait for him to go back underground and then wail on him.
For Diablos, do the same thing for his horns as you did with Uragaan's chin and then he's also easy.
But blowing shit to kingdom come is easier for me since I main Gunlance I guess. I'm not sure how hard it is for hammerfags.

That's quite strange. I did farm the normal rathalos to get my first rathalos armor, so I understood quickly how to handle these guys, but man... There's a huge gap between the normal rathian and the pink one. I play essentially with hammers, and when they do the circular move with their tails, i'm always in a near-death state.

Just keep using the forward dash, it's your best attack. Use it to the front, use it to the side, use it all the time.

I dunno what to tell you. You probably already figured out that the best combo is forward dash, stab, stab, upswing, overhead, hop. Shelling is overrated situational sharpness ruining garbage but you can always throw it in to reset your smaller combos or to flourish your main combo after the upswing and full burst before you hop and quickreload. You can also interrupt the forward dash before the diagonal thrust with a forward shell. I'm being hard on shelling because everybody depends on it too much and never learns how to combo properly with the gunlance because of it. It has its uses.

Well, while OP actually was joking about MH being shit, I'm not and let me tell you why.

It's boring. There. That alone is enough of a good reason to call a video game shit, because if it's not entertaining me, then it's failing at its job.
So why is it boring then? Well I'll tell you that too. It's boring because from a core perspective. The idea of fighting a monster for 40 fucking minutes while it uses the same 3 attacks on you, as you're using the same 3 attacks on it is just atrocious.

MH isn't the only game guilty of this. Toukiden, Freedom Wars, GE and SSD are all the same.

The game being clunky for being clunkys sake is also a huge cop out.

I've only ever played 3U as far as MH goes, and I ended up playing through normal and half way through HR before getting bored and making a new character.
This happened 3 times before I stopped playing completely.
I limited myself to 1 weapon type for each character for added fun and it was still shit.

The big dragon faggot that you fight in the water is also the worst boss I've ever had the displeasure of fighting in a video game. If you can even call it a fight.

Leno is fun, super pounds for days.

Diablos is the same way, but you gotta have a pair and understand how to dodge the charges.

Agna is kinda annoying until you learn the joy of lvl 2 charge thrusts, then the ko's just keep coming.

Diablos is great fun because of the hopeless jumps to avoid charges and because attacking the horns with a fucking oversized hammer is ridiculously rewarding.

The glacial Agnaktor is a major pain in the ass though, always charging not where you are but where you're directing yourself. This fucker mess around with you a lot.

It's probably how you're playing it.
The longsword is a crotch fighting weapon. You stand in the monster's groin and chop away at the ball sack. The greatsword is a hit and run weapon that you shouldn't really combo with. You wait for an opening, unsheathe into a charge attack, sheathe again, keep running and waiting, rinse and repeat.
You could also abuse the fuck out of traps to get some smash+charge attacks off.
