Will RTS ever come back? I feel like if Blizzard make Warcraft 4 then a resurgence of the genre would happen
>there will never be a well made reboot of Total Annihilation
I've been fantasising about Valve expanding their Dota 2 universe to make some WC3 esque story driven RTS game.
Get me right though, the "IP" and its lore is horrible but it would be better than nothing. Maybe.
>implying Blizzard is capable of making another good game
>implying all the talent has not left Blizzard
>implying anyone at Blizzard understands what seperates WC3 and Broowar's success from the failure that is SC2
>implying metzen wouldn't ruin the storyline with his self-inserts
>RTS will only come back if the genre starts to center on group play. Casuals took over which means that 1v1 titles cant be successful anymore
I have a feeling RTS games thrived not only because of the MP. Go to any C&C thread here on /v/ and you'll see posts praising its music, atmosphere, units, etc, but not much about the multiplayer. Tiberian Sun and Yuri's Revenge were pretty unbalanced as well.
LoL/Dota merely took away the people who enjoyed playing those games competitively. There should still be a market of those who want good campaigns and stuff, we just don't have any games delivering that. We all know that SC2 story fucking sucks compared to BW, and C&C died with C&C4.
>Buy the HD editions of Rise Of Nations and Age Of Empires on steam, my two favorite RTSs ever and maybe my favorite games ever
>I suck ass at them
Did I just get worse at vidya as the years went by
>Go to any C&C thread here on /v/
>here on /v/
You know what wrong with mentioning /v/? Barely anyone on this page is competitive. Thats why they play Dan in SF and say that they dont care about winning.
The only reason an RTS could ever be successful again is by it being a competitive dream. Something /v/ wouldnt even be interested in because they hate competition because it forces them to not suck.
RTS is dead, but the ARTS genre is just growing.
Can't wait for custom games to come to Dota 2, combined with the Steam Workshop it will be like the golden years of WC3 custom games.
First of all the multiplayer domination in design has to stop.
Then we can start talking about the genre being revived.
And I love multi in those games, I just understand that all it brings to genre is turning it into clickfest. Which is sad.
But the reason why WC3 got so big was the multiplayer with custom maps.
And custom maps aren't a thing anymore. I remember browsing SC2 custom maps and every map was poorly imported WC3 maps where a treant unit is actually a firebat or an orc is a zergling.
>if Blizzard make Warcraft 4
not even going to happen, now that Blizzard is partly owned by Activision, they wouldn't allow them to make a Warcraft 4 unless they can prove it would sell better than their cash cows like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone which already make so much money at this point if you haven't already known.
Open source community RTS based on Total Annihilation. Best RTS out there right now IMO, but there's a huge learning curve since the game has been out for over a decade and has no tutorial.
graphics have aged well though.
>blizzard make warcraft 4
>after diablo 3, starcraft 2, world of warcraft, hearthstone, and heroes of the storm you actually want blizzard to ruin ANOTHER franchise
Why the fuck... Do you even realize how shit blizzard is at this point?
The best you can hope for is a good strategy game dota 2 mod.
We already have a Warcraft 4,
it's called Dota 2
>there will never be an rts with in depth city sim/godsim construction, interior dungeon keeper/dorf fort decoration, sheer unit variety like command and conquer, stables, civ/HOMM esque politics with other factions, the ability to control a hero unit and command your units from the battlefield sacrifice/brutal legend/dungeon keeper style, naval battles like warcraft 2, factions that are actually interesting and diverse and not just blue good guys and red bad guys, and an artstyle on par with dota 2
How will the majority even be able to control more than 3 units at once after playing fucking Dota style games for a century?
There will be RTS, but they'll never again be as popular as WC3. There is a reason why Starcraft is rather watched, than played.
the alternative is turn based stuff that I've played a billion times already, I just want an rts that focuses on construction and exploration and not gookclick competition. Have some strategy like unit placement, sure, but christ, there's no flavor anymore.
>new, risky projects
Fourth installment which is a sequal to probably the most lucrative RTS game is not a new and risky project.
>previous cash cows can still milk
And they keep on making money. Blizzard is big enough that it can still pour resources to finish the Starcraft 2 trilogy, which is nowhere near as profitable as some of their other projects, and still make a profit from it. They just had a bunch of devs freed from Titan and soon theyir RTS specialists are down with their current strategy game.
You idea sounds like you want something where you build up for 3 hours before even being able to engage into bigger combat scenarios. That is not something an RTS does. Go play the Anno series.
>implying a simple. exact remake of WC3 and the frozen throne expansion would not be wildly successful
Of course, they'd have to not make the game even easier like they did with SC2, i.e. no unlimited unit select and other shit.
>he likes being limited to 4 units per selection in a game where you can have 80 units total
Good players control their units in chunks anyway so I don't see the problem with this. Limited unit selection is an archaic concept that adds no depth to the game.
>occupying the players attention by having him select units 5-6 times instead of once and leaving him free to actually follow the flow of battle and apply strategy and tactics is a good concept
nah, do you even watch or play RTS? When was the last time you've played an old RTS? I can tell you that it was no fun to play WC1 and WC2 when I replayed them a few months ago.
