I have a feeling RTS games thrived not only because of the MP. Go to any C&C thread here on /v/ and you'll see posts praising its music, atmosphere, units, etc, but not much about the multiplayer. Tiberian Sun and Yuri's Revenge were pretty unbalanced as well.

LoL/Dota merely took away the people who enjoyed playing those games competitively. There should still be a market of those who want good campaigns and stuff, we just don't have any games delivering that. We all know that SC2 story fucking sucks compared to BW, and C&C died with C&C4.

You know what wrong with mentioning /v/? Barely anyone on this page is competitive. Thats why they play Dan in SF and say that they dont care about winning.

The only reason an RTS could ever be successful again is by it being a competitive dream. Something /v/ wouldnt even be interested in because they hate competition because it forces them to not suck.

But the reason why WC3 got so big was the multiplayer with custom maps.

And custom maps aren't a thing anymore. I remember browsing SC2 custom maps and every map was poorly imported WC3 maps where a treant unit is actually a firebat or an orc is a zergling.

not even going to happen, now that Blizzard is partly owned by Activision, they wouldn't allow them to make a Warcraft 4 unless they can prove it would sell better than their cash cows like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone which already make so much money at this point if you haven't already known.

Open source community RTS based on Total Annihilation. Best RTS out there right now IMO, but there's a huge learning curve since the game has been out for over a decade and has no tutorial.

graphics have aged well though.

Fourth installment which is a sequal to probably the most lucrative RTS game is not a new and risky project.

And they keep on making money. Blizzard is big enough that it can still pour resources to finish the Starcraft 2 trilogy, which is nowhere near as profitable as some of their other projects, and still make a profit from it. They just had a bunch of devs freed from Titan and soon theyir RTS specialists are down with their current strategy game.

Good players control their units in chunks anyway so I don't see the problem with this. Limited unit selection is an archaic concept that adds no depth to the game.

nah, do you even watch or play RTS? When was the last time you've played an old RTS? I can tell you that it was no fun to play WC1 and WC2 when I replayed them a few months ago.
