I just finished EarthBound and Mother 3 for the first time.
How am I supposed to go on? Why are these games so perfect?
My favourite part was whenever you would pick up an item it would say "You got *item*! Maybe."
These games were hilarious. Going to start Mother 1 right now.
I played through this for the first time last week, it was pretty great.
Still prefer EarthBound though.
Have you told your Mother you love her today /v/?
>How am I supposed to go on?
That's what I'm thinking, but for a different reason.
Play Mother 1 with the Easy Ring in Mother 1+2. Don't feel like a casual, it doesn't actually lower the difficulty but only makes it less tedious, you don't have to grind and the random encounter rate is tolerable. With it, I'd say it's better than Earthbound and second only to Mother 3.
I don't even know which I prefer. I don't think I could pick. They're both jawdropping.
Yeah I played through it the first time without even knowing the easy patch existed, and it's definitely not a game ruining amount of grinding. But for subsequent playthroughs, theres no shame in using the patch.
Reminds me of a joke I heard, once.
Artist's rendition of Ken (Ninten) according to his description from the official Mother novel. Assuming it's accurate to the letter, exactly what the hell did that novel say?
>Beat Earthbound earlier this week as well
>Never expected it to match up to Mother 3
>As a whole it was entirely equal an experience
There's only three games I think that have achieved anything close to the greatest/most highly regarded art works of film and literature
EB and M3 are two of them. That's overrating them but from an analytical perspective there is so much going on behind these games that is portrayed so sincerely and subtly that I couldn't help but be utterly immersed, surprised and delighted during my playthroughs.
Plan on playing through Mother 1 now when I get the time.
I saw on Starmen there's romhacks, are the halloween ones good? Was thinking of playing them next month.
>lucas pulls 3 of the needles and the magypsies can feel his goodness radiating from them
>claus claims three other needles for wickedness and they fight over the last needle
>after killing his own brother, lucas's will to see goodness return to the world vanished completely as he ceases to care about anything
>even though he beat claus to the needle, it was still a victory for wickedness and the dragon destroys everything
>game is too sad so developers shoehorn in a happy ending at the last second
It's comfy and it's creepy. That's all he asked for.
Even amongst the Team Silent SH games they all felt different from each other. SH 1's more pulpy horror, SH 2's much more psychological. The gameplay definitely takes a backseat to the storytelling and atmosphere though.
Either way the story in it's on an entirely different level from SH 1, 3 and 4, so I'd give it a shot. Controls might be clunky if you're not used to traditional survival horror though. The camera is MUCH more dynamic and better than early RE games.
You pique my interest. Because when something is this overhyped, I feel like I am going to encounter disappointment. I assume they are good but do they really make everything else pointless? Like seriously? Like I love the Legacy of Kain series and Devil May Cry 3 and think they are amazing, but never would I think they were the final thing I'd ever play that was good.
It's very easy to overhype the games, but honestly the biggest possibly only problem I really could find with them is that Earthbound's a little unbalanced early on so you should grind a few levels every now and then.
If you don't like "old" JRPGs, then you probably won't like them.
THe thing is if you don't mind old JRPG mechanics then both EB and Mother 3 benefit from being truly unique games. The Mother series is really different from almost everything else out there.
>you will never try to wake up your groggy friends for another day of adventuring
Although you never really did that in the actual Mother games. I still really liked the quirks like Ness' homesickness or Poo's inability to eat burgers.
I played and beat Mother 1 and loved it. I'm like 2/5 of the way through Earthbound right now and just lost interest. Is something wrong with me? Should I pick it up again? Mother 3 looks good but i'd rather finish Earthbound before I pick up the 3rd one.
the problem is I always feel like i have to find and get every little thing, so I look through a walkthrough before each new area and such. It adds a bit more of stress to the play through I guess. Should I just play blindly? I feel like I'll miss shit and I don't know if I can handle that
>tfw i love the zsnes interface
>everybody else hates it or just doesn't like it
>I have to find and get every little thing
Wait till you hit Stonehedge.
When the devs said they could remove all references to the Mother series while keeping the main game intact in case of legal trouble, I hope that means Mother 4 can stand on its own feet.
Don't use a guide the only thing you'll need help with is the final battle, everything else is directly told through the game, and the levels are never convoluted to the point it's hard to find stuff
Grinding also only helps, so if you feel aneed to backtrack that is far from a bad thing, it's very helpful to just suck it up and explore on your own, fighting whatever comes your way
I think it's neat too because one of your main characters is much more effective when you rely on items. At least of the "old" style JRPG's i've played I've never seen anything like that.
It's like Dragon Quest but with some unique quirks. Poo not being able to use normal food or protective gear comes to mind as well.
My recent replay of Earthbound has made me value Ness a whole lot more as a vidya main character. He's amazing.
It's hard to explain, it's almost treat the game like it's their religion.
They act like the game is a messenger of love and peace, and the deepest thing in the world.
There's fanfiction, RPing, and fan comics where they try their hardest to be 100% true to the story, and create their own interpretations of various events. It kinda makes me afraid Mother 4 will be any good.
Also they have a large hatred of Reggie because they assume he's too blame for Mother 3 not being released here.
But one of the most annoying things is their love of playing victim, they act like Mother/Earthbound is the most underrated series on the planet, and almost come off as thinking we'd achieve world peace if everyone played it.
I have immense faith in Mother 4, at least in terms of it being a quirky and somewhat memorable RPG adventure. I doubt they could make it emotionally engaging, however the people invovled have seemed wholly open to criticism, objective review. When I heard they changed the name of the main protag and the guy based on it wished them well while stepping back that impressed me.
>the desert with the
salt and pepper grains
>mfw you only get an extra album picture for this
I learned about him during N64 Smash, and he was my fav to play as in Melee, but I always just took him as "kid that saves the world."
When homesickness kicked in on my recent first-time palythrough of Earthbound I thought it was incredible. It's such a simple idea, it's just a status effect, but the dialogue that accompanies it in battle is great.
Then by the time you get to
Lumine Hall, I was blown away. From there forward the game re-established that he's far away from home and like any kid would be scared of what's around the corner, even with the courage/strength to fight it. It's such a simple thing that adds much more depth to the character and story.
>The Magicant stage in Smash 3DS
>I'm gonna beat you.
>I'm gonna beat you, boy.
>Daddy's gonna beat you.
>Aged like milk
>Had same gameplay except combos and running
The guy in charge now is a longtime /v/irgin who's worked on games before. His humor in threads was always kind of subtle and fun, I can't remember the link but his devblog had some pretty good writing. I think it'll be ok.
>tfw making earthbound look as shit as possible
>implying that's not how it was originally supposed to be played
YOU JUST DON'T GET IT
>You will never be a blonde american kid w/ a baseball bat going on massive adventures to save the world
Why don't parents let their kids do this these days?
This generation will most likely miss out on that, but the bounce-back reaction in the next generation will generate parental neglect out the ass. A new wave of kids going on disproportionately dangerous adventures will begin.
Itoi was made super uncomfortable when he read his own writing to the point that he got sick. He then had the team tone down Tane Tane Island for him because he was imagining his own family experiencing it.
We have no idea what it was, but it was bad.
>You can do chapter 7 out of the order it requests you to
>You can go to Tanetane Island with just Lucas and Boney
>If you go without Duster you get a new Alec hallucination
>He asks Lucas if he's seen Hinawa >He turns you YOU and says "I know you've seen her!"
I don't even know what to do in earthbound, I haven't touched the rom in a while. Right now there's some guy telling me to go rescue Paula and I have the Giant Step sound on the sound stone, but I don't know where Paula is or what the giant step osund is for.
I don't think so.
I felt that Mother 3 played everything up better. The change in Tazmilly, Thunder Tower, and New Pork City were all great.
Plus if you wanted to look at the bigger picture, I think that an island that is inhabited by war survivors that blanked their memory being invaded by an dimension-travelling "kid" and his army is better than Giygas' second invasion and even the first Giygas invasion and his backstory in Mother 1.
every time someone makes one of these threads with no idea there's 10+ more games just as good as the 3 mother games I die a little more
I haven't played it in a while, I don't know what to do. Genius kid is telling me he can help me in peaceful rest valley if I cough up 200$ but I don't know how to get that much. Paula's supposedly been kidnapped so I can't find her at her house in Twoson.
The reason you think the games are perfect is because they touch on resonant themes, OP. And because its a game that primarily made with passion and emotion rather than profit in mind. The characters and world are incredibly charming and relatable, and you'd be hard pressed to find anything as resonant as the mother trilogy. The Mother trilogy is probably the game that relies most on its director- without Itoi, the game loses so much of what makes it good. This is why Mother 4 has such a gigantic fucking hill to climb, as they have to match Itoi the god.
Best of luck, Mother 4 team. I know you're reading this thread. I know your game comes out in 3 months, supposedly. I know you can do it, too. You just need to tap into your human and quirky side.
I leave this thread with my all time favorite Mother remix.
Mother gives me a feel so complicated
Also, I like the one when Ness goes to the past, but I forgot the track name.
You don't have to talk to him to actually earn the money, but he'll tell you how much you have, anyway.
Orange Kid is a showoff, Apple Kid will be your bro for the whole game.
I'm not sure I've been as immersed in a game as I was in Earthbound. It took me like 5 tries to get into it, but once I broke through the first hour or so I couldn't stop. Real melancholy feelings as I walked through the world after beating Giygas. I really took my time.
I still love the game to bits, primarily for the humor.
For a group of kids that were only brought together due to psychic premonition, the fanart makes me think they've hit it off really well.
I was 15 or 16 when I first beat Earthbound and I listened to the soundtracks and fan albums almost exclusively for a long-ass time. I had them all organized and uploaded to megaupload along with my autistically organized folder of Mother fanart from pixiv and I'd spam them in every single Mother 3 thread when that came out. Played through Mother 3 in Japanese with a guide then again after the patch came out. Only RPG I've beaten twice.
Even when I sperged over the Mother series THAT much I only visited starmen for guides
>want to replay Earthbound
>remember the zombie area
Easily the worst part of the game.
>get to Threed
Except for the middle part it's over pretty quick.
...you aren't hating on Winters are you, friend?
Engaging enough mechanic that didn't really catch on. I wonder why, I liked it.
Also I love this lil' nigga. What a qt.
This isn't funny
I want to play mother 1, but it's just for the NES right? I can't help but think it'll play unbearably slow.
Several Mario RPGs have flavor at least aiming the same direction. Mostly Superstar Saga and TTYD.
Contact was Akira Ueda's attempt at a tribute but the battle system feels shoehorned in like they couldn't bother programming a proper one.
I just don't know why nobody has tried making a modern big-budget game like this yet.
>tfw I realize it's been 6 fucking years since I beat Earthbound and was shitposting even back then
G-guys, why do I have so much shota in my Earthbound fanart folder?
It's similar in gameplay style to Mother, except more grinding (which is optional, if you play the GBA port).
Speaking of which, I heavily recommend the GBA port as well. You just need the fan translation patch. It's better in most ways and makes it a lot easier to get into from Earthbound/Mother 3.
Yeah I hate Toriyama's art too, it makes me feel physically nauseous for some reason.
The music is cozy and the ending is worth it even if the game feels half-finished. It feels like a weird PS1 RPG.
I'm not into that though. I accidentally some really graphic stuff.
no I won't share
Its cause Ness is one of those kids who makes friends with everyone just by being really nice and happy all the time. Just look at that smile, how could anyone not wanna hang with this dude.
just started. what can i expect?
>play through mother 3
>Get to the part where you get the walking table
>Go back to town
>Save States are kill
>Ingame save is kill too
>mfw i gotta start from the very beginning again
>tony clearly all over jeff's dick
>distressingly little art
Nothing wrong with wanting to see cute boys in distress.
I don't feel anything. I must have siphoned these out of another shitposter's collection.
To be fair, Tony was confirmed gay.
>implying Tony wasn't gonna hold dat hand the second Jeff got back
I could have sworn he wore shorts in an earlier version.
Apparently they found shorts harder to animate, or something.
Though that's just hearsay.
I don't understand Giegue porn. I saved it because it's funny.
I don't even know what's happening in this one just looking at the thumbnail. I'm coming home, ma.
That is disappointing, but there are three cute boys there, so we'll be alright.
>New Pork City in Mother 3 is one of the most surreal environments in a video game ever, everything is fake and 2D with it's clearly was just the creation of a child without much imagination and with a gigantic ego.
>New Pork City in Smash Brothers Brawl is just a generic urban city with a Mother 3 monster who occasionally pops out and hurts you.
Even the music that was so distinct and bizarre is just reduced to generic bullshit. I'll never forgive them for that:
Not worth it relies on psp game kernal patches same as running pro b4 on the vita its whack as fuck. That one dude who gave away the files because he had a pissing contest with the other hacker dude is a faggot for setting everything back.
Vita would see crazy sales if that crack would have gone through nicely.
For now, he lives on as Ness' custom moveset.
You know, the actual ending of M3 isn't what got to me. I felt sad, sure, but that wasn't what got the waterworks running.
It was the message after the end of the game. You know what I'm talking about.
It's not that bad to be honest. I still go there every now and then, and heck they're a lot better than other forums from what I've seen. Really though I think the game just means a whole lot to people and a lot of people interpret it as having lots of uplifting morals. They aren't mean people by any means kind of like how bronies will snap at you for the silliest things and sort of expect you to treat them with extreme respect, heck they seem really really nice. I know it's just a simple, happy game and I love it so much for that, but I can't help but look at it and find so many things that are really neat to ponder about. Every fandom has it's problems though, I suppose. I guess I just haven't noticed the problems of the Mother fandom as they don't seem to intentionally do anything that's really wrong.
Heck now that I really think about it, there really isn't anything too crazy deep about it, the "deep" stuff seems to be really simple stuff about friendship and courage, which are reoccuring themes throughout the series in general. I dunno, I'm just a huge, huge sucker for really happy lighthearted things and the Mother series takes the cake for being so happy.
>Talking shit about Reggie
You don't deserve Mother 3.
Uhh i think you mean the sesame seeds.
also citation needed all the fuzzy pickle photos are set from specific locations but are there flags for photos that don't involve the camera man? now that i think about it don't you get an additional photo after buying the house in onett?
Leave before you get spoiled to death. If you've made it this far it's probably too late.
Mother 3 had some pacing problems and I think New Pork City only having an hour or so's worth of content is one of the worst. The setting is really clever but it feels like they could have done more with it.
>Magicant stage in Smash 3DS
I needed this
Does someone have Magical Game Time's comics? My copies seem to have dissapeared.
Mother 3 has better combat system, and engaging story.
Earthbound has way better music tracks.
I was gonna say Earthbound had better environments but its like modern settings Mother 3 has post modern settings and its pretty great too. Cmon man the skyscraper dungeon. The toilet dungeon.
I like how Claus is included in some of the group shots with the other Mother protagonists.
>Played Mother first
>Try to play Earthbound but can't get into it as much
I might play a little tonight before I sleep. I know it'll be a good game if I give it more time. Also, I've been humming this song for the past couple of weeks all the time, please help:
I didn't feel Mother was all happy. It was kind of sad and depressing on some parts to me.
lmao nigga the menus movement between EB and M3 are comparable to each other aside from minor additional animations on overworld sprites. You probably mean the sprites have more detail and variation between one another in M3.
>Hey world, treat Anon okay!
I think Mother 3 beats it music-wise too. It has some great remixes, plus the Love theme, and the awesome Magypsy tracks.
EB's menus are laggy as fuck, god help you if you want heals or a jeff item in combat that's in the middle of the list
having to shuffle around jeff's inventory every time he gets something good is a pain in the ass
Morphine is actually two crazy bitches who work together.
Ah, yeah. The game still seems to be about a kid growing up into a hero or whatever and there's still happy things going on in the background, but yeah it's.. not really the best experience I had with the Mother series to be honest. I prefer the first two a little more as they feel like they're more what the series is about.
Ah, yeah. I feel really bad for Giygas. I mean god he might've had it worse than Lucas. He just seemed really misunderstood, really.
Dang, didn't know the fandom was that bad for you. I've had a great experience with it so far.
I thought that Mother was the most consistently dour of the 3.
EB was basically lighthearted with spurts of serious/sadness. Mother 3 balanced it a bit better.
But in Mother, I think it's more like the reverse of EB. There are happier moments (the dancing bit), but they're the exception.
Fuck, that's what got me too.
After so many threads of nothing but weak bait and angry people getting pissed at every little thing, I finally find threads like this that are mostly comfy. It would suck to have it removed due to people dumping shota.
>You will never be so cool you can tag with a Paintbrush
Of course they did, because they're an idealized group of destined friends.
Of course, most people don't anything like that, so there aren't many people like that in the world, mostly Porkies sitting around thinking everyone else's lives are better than theirs.
>Get sick after working outside for three days in a row.
>Have crazy sunburn and sprained spine.
>Get to spend a few days at home.
>Strongly considering replaying Mother 3.
>tfw I have a Mother 3 cartridge for my GBA with english patch
It doesn't mean anything. It's a technique used by Itoi to close off the game in a satisfying way. Its exhalation after holding your breath during the big tense climax and coda. Its Itoi snapping the book shut and winking at you the player using something guaranteed to stir up feelings of nostalgia from a simpler point in the game.
Its brilliant in its simplicity.
>find naked Magypsie in a hot spring
>it sees a lot of magic in me
>cuts to black
>"Yeesh! Just a little longer."
jesus christ shiggy
I don't think the greaser is a shota.
Unless you mean Travis' brother, in which case incest when
