It's a series where you will fail if you don't learn and adapt, developing your own skillset, and you will prevail if you use your brain and learn what is required from you.
This is also why there's people that don't get MH gameplay and will NEVER get into it.

I felt the same way. The key is to figure out how weapons ar similar and use them like that until you steadily branch out and develop skill with them individually.

It's a pretty easy switch between GS and Switch axe if you use the sword bit of the switch axe a lot.

It's also pretty easy to switch between Hammer and Hunting horn.

Have you tried the Hunting Horn? I main Swaxe, and decided to try it out and I transferred between the two pretty easily.
When I want to try out a new weapon, I use it against G.Jaggi and Peco until I feel like I know the moveset well, then take it against Lagi/Ludroth to learn how it fights underwater, then start taking it against tougher monsters like Rathalos and Jay Leno. It eases you into the weapon, but still helps you learn it pretty well.

MHFU is pretty damn hard throughout, more rigid making you learn proper timing of everything. P3rd is the easiest of the bunch and has armor skills so good early it breaks shit. 3U is underwhelming at first but balances out.

They are untill you're balls deep into G rank basically. Like the 8* shit, and even then Bowguns are still pretty good. Fights either go incredibly quickly or are slightly longer on average.

I wouldn't really reccommend bows for soloing though. HBG is probably the best of the three.

They're good, just don't expect the best kill times with them. They can apply status, so you can do fun shit like Sleep Bombing, para, poison & shit. Just get repetitive after awhile though. The effect is magnified since they don't do alot of damage, so you may occasionally think "Fuck this shit, I could've killed this nigga quicker with X weapon". Great support weapon as well.

Just go with what you're most comfortable using.

Love MH but not Souls, they aren't really comparable either beyond both being difficult. MH is difficult but fair, there is a way of going about everything that can be solved and none of it is made to be particularly cryptic, everything is reliant on your skill as a player. DS is difficult but in a dickish, cheap way and is purposely obtuse to frustrate the player, very different philosophies at play.

If you've never played a hunting game before, I'd say go with GE over Monhun. It's easier to handle and the fights are pretty fun. Story is generic at best and fanfiction-tier at worst though.

If you enjoyed the hunting giant monsters and making equipment out of them aspect of it but want something more grounded and less anime, then consider MonHun.

You grind when you want the rare, cool looking shit with a bunch of special skills. Technically, you can do just fine with a generic Jaggi armor set, upgraded to max defense and a mid-tier weapon, neither of which would require particularly rare parts.
Of course that only works if you know what you are doing, but this is not an MMO in which a certain monster is literally impossible to beat unless you are at a certain level or have specific equipment.

Different anon here, I did that for village Alatreon but I've found a better Kelbi Bow set that I used to solo the G rank Alatreon, that's Focus, Awaken, Bombardier, and Challenger +2.

This is better because it doesn't have huge Dragon and Thunder weaknesses and instead is only really weak to Fire which are some of his most telegraphed attacks.
When bowing, especially solo, spamming lv 1 shots willy nilly won't get you anywhere, that's best if you have 3 or 4 people all together doing that to cheese em out.
ALWAYS charge to at least a lv 2 and aim for his head and his tail as those are his weakest spots.

Good things to bring are combines for more Power Coatings [20 Nitroshrooms and 20 empty phials], Farcasters and things to make them [10 Exciteshrooms and 10 Bomb Casings], Tanzia Chips [to instantly heal off red health], and Nulberries.
