Snake never belonged to begin with, Nobody liked Pichu, Young Link is still in under the name Toon Link, and nobody truly liked Roy, they just liked the idea of Roy.

Wolf hurts the most.

It had all the reason to come back if you factor in relevance (starring role in a movie, first Mega revealed, has two Megas, available in Kalos for some reason, essentially the final opponent in Pokemon Origins), and one of its Megas is even geared to be a physical fighter. It had all the reasons to come back, and didn't. Thanks, Sakurai. Thanks for putting in Dark Pit as his own character, while still giving Pit his stupid dark palette colour scheme that Dark Pit's very existence was based off of.

Pichu and Dr. Mario were two clone characters I wasn't shocked to see get kicked from Brawl. I always forgot about Pichu.

Although Roy WAS just a shittier Marth clone, he was from FE6, my favorite FE game to date. He's completely irrelevant now as well, but I don't mind him being gone. It would suck to have 3 Different Marths running around in SSB4.

Snake was cool, and I'm sad to see him go, but he's also irrelevant now. Hopefully that bullshit about DLC will be true.

I'm most sad about Lucas and Wolf. I've never played earthbound and I'm no huge fan of starfox, and I know Earthbound is comepletely irrelevant and oit of the picture, but shit, Sakurai fucking boned the Starfox and Earthbound fans.

I don't know about you fags, but when I play a fighting game, I'm far more interested in how a character plays than who a character is. Take Tatsunoko vs Capcom, I really only cared about the Megaman characters, but I ended up playing it more because I enjoyed how Polimar and Tekkaman played.

Smash 4 has many new unique play types, more than any other Smash, yet people are so hung up because Ridley or K-"I haven't been in a DK game since the 64"-Rool weren't in. And I say this as a colossal Ridleyfag who still holds false hope that he'll be DLC.

An interesting thing to note is that most of the weird ones are generally dated as being last modified over a year ago or so, whereas those pertaining to used characters (and for some reason Ice Climbers) were only modified recently

As for the rest of the files, there's nothing that interesting, other than the Ice Climber textures aren't present in the trophy folders but in the player folders. Same with the Lucas trophy textures.

There are empty texture and model folders for Mewtwo, "kinopio" and "pra_mai", as well as a folder called "virtual_boy" which just has files called vbcolor that are like 3 kb in size each.

Looking at this my guess is they were planning on having the Ice Climbers in, and they were just cut really late in development.

At this point everyone playin smash knows who the ice climbers are so there's no need for the 2-characters gimmick to implement them, their moveset is already pretty unique.

Ice Climbers. Not even like I played them, but they seem so closely associated with the series. They were the first "wait, what?" addition for almost everyone. Captain Falcon and Ness were relatively obscure but had their fans, but Ice Climbers? Plus, they had a really unique gimmick.

Hopefully they'll make a return in Smash 5.

These cuts hurt more than Brawl's, the only series that went down in reps was Mario. In this game Mother, Star Fox and Ice Climber went down in reps (and Metal Gear but understandable). Moreover Brawl only cut one non-clone. Say what you want about Brawl's mechanics, but I think it did a better job at keeping its roster a bit more balanced in terms of reps.

Dr. Mario is a great character, but really should have been nothing more than an advanced costume. Sakurai gave himself too many rules with alts in Smash 4, but seemed to have contradicted them when he made Bowser Jr.'s alts.

As for the other Melee vets, people only really needed Mewtwo back, he stood out very well and was originally going to be in Brawl, another unexpected cut.

Snake, which was expected. Toon Link IS young link, and I don't care about the rest that much, especially Lucas and Wolf since they'll probably be available using customs.

The others are completely ridiculous.

Not only has Sakurai proven that he's okay with alternate costumes changing the characters identity (Alph, Koopalings), but he's added a bunch of other clones that play nearly identically to their source character.

There is ZERO reason that Wolf, and Lucas couldn't have been at least costumes for Fox and Ness, and there's absolutely no reason that Mewtwo shouldn't have come back.

Well I honestly I don't care about these guys too. ROB and Mr. Game and Watch were just novelties for me so I wouldn't mind if ?ce Climbers replaced any of these guys.

Duck Hunt Dog on the other hand is an immediately recognizable character compared to other retro reps and especially compared to Ice climbers. Also in the case of Ness, he was relevant because first of all he was a veteran from Smash 64 and second, even tho Mother is dead, the series has a cult following unlike ice climbers.

The only thing going for ice climbers were their mechanic. They being bland is mostly my opininon and I don't claim it has something to do with the reason they are cut. I'm just stating that I'm not sad because I thought they were bland.

One of my favorite things about Melee as a sequel was that the original 10 all felt completely fresh and new, they played SO different to how they did in 64, lots of new moves, new smashes, new tilts, new specials, new throws, etc
Brawl... Just made everyone a quick port job except made them all shittier in the process. Smash 4 is split though. Some got a slight revamp like Mario, Samus, ZSS, Link, and Bowser, but others just seem way too Brawl-esque, like Ganon, Wario, Luigi, Toon Link, and Peach. These are just a few examples but you can really tell which veterans actually had actual effort put into them and which ones were quick port jobs.
