This is genuinely a good thing. It kind of lowers the bar, but, then again, it kind of set its own genre (Fuck infiniminer. It never catched as much as Minecraft anyways). So it's not really hard to do better. It's just that nobody attempting to do a Minecraft-like is able to do without either ending up NOT making a Minecraft-like or completely plagiarising the game.

What I liked about Mine Craft was the survival and shelter building aspect, but it's been so long now that I am positive that someone could make a much better game around those themes that isn't so ugly. Minecraft will always be interesting just for the novelty of everything being made of cubes and being able to stack them together like legos, but it's pretty much hit the plateau by now. All they can really do is keep adding new gimmicks to get people to check it out again.

I feel the same way about The Sims, really-- I like the idea of being able to design characters and focus on the life simulation stuff, but the controls in The Sims drive me insane and I hate it how I have to spend half my time having to empty the pee meter and make sure no-one starves themselves instead of making my fort cooler and finding ways to amuse myself. It feels more like work than play half the time.

You would control your character directly and be able to socialize with other characters, but the main draw of the game is that you are looking for money so that you can build a cooler house and put more entertaining stuff in it. I gave the guy 12 bucks years ago when he added crafting benches and have gotten countless hours out of it, lots of fun with friends, and they're STILL updating it. No micro transactions or any of that shit, and the modding community has created some great stuff. I'm glad he took the infiniminer concept and actually did something with it. I think he deserves his success and my positive experience with the whole thing has lead me to do more crowdsourcing since.

My only real problem is that the game never reached anywhere near its potential, I don't like Notch because with all the money he made he didn't do anything with it, he could have, he could have easily hired a medium sized team and greatly improved on the title, but he didn't. Modding still isn't in the game after what like 5 years. I bought that game when it was still Indev too.

He is a terrible programmer. I've written some mods myself and before the team he hire refactored it, it was a fucking mess of terrible coding practices.

Because of that, he had to reevaluate his aspirations for it. By the time he hired the rest of the people, the game had changed to something else. Whether or not it reached its "potential" really is a moot point. It's what it is, which is actually a pretty fun game.
