Some games are incredible shit, perform like shit, look like shit...etc. Some games have good graphics but struggle to run past 5fps with or without 3D turned on. Then some games just blow your mind away, great textures, silky smooth...etc.

Still some launch games like oot, starfox 64 and doa dimensions look amazing while newer third party games are ugly.
Sometimes I think that the low resolution actually helps masking some of the issues, especially with 3d on.

I know, but the 3DS has been the biggest performance discrepancy of any console, handheld or not, in recent years (PCs not included, obviously). You have Pokemon X and Y which has absolutely horrendous framerate issues during battles, despite Pokemon models and attack animations being relatively simple. Then you have shit like MH3U, Kingdom Hearts DDD, and MK7 all of which look AND run like a dream. It's just jarring.

Perhaps it's because Pokemon is considered a first party game, but can't even run well on its native system that's getting me.
