I'm making a 2D Action RPG
My game was originally inspired by Castlevania SoTN but I applied my own ideas to it for cuhrayzee combat and some systems I think will be interested once I get around to working on them.
I have a lot of stuff prototyped out so far, such as starting combat moves, health system (it's hearts right now but i'm thinking about doing a different system), text windows for NPC chatting and the inventory, but the art is mostly placeholder at the moment.

Honestly I took a break for a long ass time (about 8 months) because I demotivated myself, but once I de-neeted my life I all of a sudden found the motivation to work on it again.
Managed to even fix a bug today. I'm a bit rusty though so i'm sure that bug isn't completely fixed.

I wish I still had some of my old .gifs from last year when I was fixing bugs.
Making games is a lot of fun.

I once tried making a sort of mechwarrior-style RPG using RPGMaker years and years ago. I was having trouble getting RPGM's retarded coding system to perform the functions I wanted (trying to get spells and abilities be specific to the parts your mech had equipped) and so I asked for help on one of the huge forums dedicated to RPGMaker.

TL;DR
Recently quit my job in the video game industry to work full time on my own game. Back to indie roots I quit 5 years ago.

Part godgame, part voxel. You play as a cube. You can create avatars and possess them Dungeon Keeper style. You add rockets to space islands to make them your own spaceship then fight other players. Everything can be auto building and auto repairing thanks to living cubes.
(game still WIP and I never talked about it).

It's a very long process. I spent 5 years in the amateur / demoscene / indie community (before people called it "indie") as a programmer / tool developer on RPG Maker. I've help lots of great RPGs (b.e. To the Moon), but it didn't help me to pay taxes.
So I spent 2 years in a private video game school, then 3 years as a professional business assistant / community manager / crowdfunder specialist.
So, yes, it's 10 years long. In various 9 square meters (30 x 30 feet) large rooms in order to spare money.

Now I have enough money to live work full time on my game. I already spent 1 year and half part time on it, and I think I still need at least 8 months fulltime before an alpha.

If you want to make your own game, I strongly suggest to start with one of the entry level game maker software such as RPG Maker, Game Maker or Multimedia Fusion. You have to learn a lot about the different kind of files and the different jobs (Game Designer, Level Designer, Writer, 2D Artist, etc).
These softwares are robust and allow you to make fastly a first game. Besides, there are a lot of tutorials and forums to help.
If you are already a software engineer, or have good scripting skills, Unity 3D can be for you.

Whatever you do, always make screenshots and video of your work. It will be the only thing left after you quit your project / lose your sources / grow old enough to have wymen and children.
By the way, it's very usefull to put them in your book / resume to show that you are able to create something.

It's a pro-wrestling-themed VN with gameplay segments being split between a traditional 2D plane fightan and a side-scrolling beat 'em up.

>A top down 3d shooter in the style of gta2.
>A browser game in style of civ 1.
>Offline mmorpg like 3D rpg in a homemade engine.

Filled to the brim with programmer art and bugs but some of them were playable.
Also:

Work a normal programmer job and indie dev on the side. Professional game dev is a toxic environment where you're forced to listen to idea guys who haven't gotten the slightest notion of what makes a game tick.

You know, I never really understood why people dislike seeing Internet memes in video games. For example, the stuff in Borderlands 2, or El Guacamelee, or Watch_Dogs. None of it bothered me at all. I even chuckled at some of it.

But I definitely acknowledge that a lot of people HATE that shit and don't want to see it in their games. I'd like to include a reference or two, but not if I'm aware that the majority of people want to vomit when they see that stuff.

I think I want to include a "Memes" checkbox in the options menu. It will be off by default. But if you tick it on, then internet memes show up in the game. This activates Vivian, and changes some of the game's dialogue. So, people who don't like that shit won't have to see it, but other people who would get a laugh out of it can enable it.

I'm actually all for video games including more options. Options to make female characters' costumes less revealing. Options to remove politically incorrect jokes. Options to remove homophobic slurs. The SJWs can toggle whatever they want so they don't have to feel offended while they play video games, and developers don't have to remove that shit in order to appease the tumblrwhales.

Anyone else think that's a good idea, or does it sound stupid?

Depends on what kind of programmer you want to be.
Graphic/engine related stuff is vastly different from gameplay related programming.

One is high performance and in a low level language like C++.
The other can be C++ but often is in a 'scripting' language like lua, python, C#.

If you're indie you'll have to know both, in large teams however, you have to specialize to survive.
Try both and see what your forte is.

If you want to work in games, build a portfolio.
That way you can walk up to a company and show them: This is what I made, this is why I'm good.
