VNs are not mutually exclusive to games

It honestly depends on the VN. From least to most gamey:

1) There are ones that require nothing but to sit through a story. These basically aren't games honestly but they probably won't hide it's just a VN anyway.

2) There are ones that are the same as above, but with branching paths and basically become 'chose your own adventure' books. A lot of Dating Sim VNs fall into this one.

3) Then there's ones that start to add random puzzles that must be solved before you can continue. Zero Escape is the best example of this kind.

4) Then it goes to games where the puzzles are actually part of the narrative, so you need to pay attention to the story to solve the puzzles. Phoenix Wright goes here.

5) Same as 3 or 4, but with extra mini games or other modes outside the main story. Layton and DanganRonpa.

6) VNs where people forget they are VNs due to the amount of actual interactivity with it. Ghost Trick.

Every chapter you're brought to that screen.
You then "listen" to the inner voices of several characters (usually the protagonist and the major characters of that chapter) where you learn about their feelings, motivation, and history. You also learn little bits about the pervading mystery of the game and the lore of the world from the hanging hand/mask.

When you listen to one voice, it will black out some other highlighted voices and highlight some of the blacked out ones. You have to figure out the order by looking at what's highlighted at the top and not get stuck in a dead end. In most chapters you don't have to hear every voice before you end it, but if you continue before the pictures on the left and right are clear you won't unlock the option you need to choose at the end of the chapter to continue.
