There's a certain style that every Mario character follows, even the villains and NPCs of the normal games. A cartoony element that stays simple enough so that anyone can look at them and find them appealing to a degree. Mallow and Geno don't follow this at all. They're made solely for SMRPG's shitty art style, and making Mario/Peach/Bowser as ugly as they are there is the only way for it to work. That's fine for itself, but it wouldn't work in the modern time.

Even back then though, something like Yoshi is a good example of a design that both fits what you'd expect to see in Mario while being pretty unique in its own right. A character having their design follow off of someone else isn't a new concept for the series like you want to pretend it is. Luigi, Daisy, and Wario were characters back then too.

That's a really shitty argument right there.

She's plot relevant. She's the reason why Mario gets a Luma, why he's able to access other galaxies, and I think at some points why he doesn't just straight up die. The idea of adding her was to help give Mario a grander feel, in part with a new, powerful character helping him and having the storybook there to incorporate some level of plot because the main Mario games typically never bothered with them. Even if you don't like any of that it doesn't really detract from the point that it all served a purpose.

And I went back and read what exactly the context of this post was. Someone responded and basically said you could say the same exact thing for Peach, and I think you could add Luigi and Toad to that too.

Shadow was actually done pretty well, had a fair backstory, which made his return as a competent and confident sagely version of Sonic.
And Rosalina could potentially be a new addition to the cast, has proven to be quite popular, and SM3DW hammered out how she would be a potential character by taking away her wand and Lumas, leveling the playing field.

If you were going to criticize Rosalina for being an NPC, you could bitch about Peach being the NPC who just sits back until the end of the game for you to rescue her, or Luigi being just another character to play as in a single player game with very little variation from Mario's own playstyle and no real significance on your first playthrough of the game (or how he wasn't even in SM64 and Sunshine, which is a great way to show how much he isn't needed), or Toad being an NPC who doesn't even do anything.

Did you not even read my post? I listed the shit she did. You get a Luma from her, you're pulled onto her Observatory that actually lets you get access to other Galaxies through her, and she's the one who helps save Mario once or twice herself. She's the one who pilots the Observatory straight to Bowser, getting you through a ton of his forces and ultimately right to him.

About as plot relevant as any enemy except she's an ally who isn't waiting around for you to save her like Peach and Luigi needed for you to do.

She's part of some gameplay shit in Galaxy 2. Optional shit, but all the same it's still there.

One thing that made SMRPG memorable was that it took elements from Mario and made them into something unique while adding its own distinct flair. It did what Paper Mario did before Paper Mario was a thing. To make a sequel with the sterilization and streamlined rules of modern Mario would be uninspired and bland. Leave it alone.

Geno and Mallow are Mario characters that reflect a particular time of Nintendo.

I can't get down with that. SMRPG did so much with so little that to make a sequel would sully the original. It took elements from Yoshi, Wario and even Donkey Kong and molded them into original, unique characters. It's like what some people say about Chrono Trigger: You had the right people at the right time. SMRPG was done at the right time with the right people. It was literally catching lightning in a bottle.

Nintendo would never let them do anything like that today. Seriously, the characters from that game were awesome, enemies, bosses, you name it. Again, they built a world with only bricks and glue.

But seriously, a lot people fail to realize that most of SMRPG's cast were expies of earlier Mario enemies, design-wise with some added features. Mallow, Axem Rangers, Chained Kong, Booster, Boshi, the list goes on and on. I've really started to appreciate the game's characters seeing this thread and I adored the in-game graphics back when I first played it. But you're right, today's audiences couldn't handle Bowyer or Yaridovich. Nintendo either for that matter.
