just downloaded FFT. I'm decent at most strategy vidya and I've played the shit gba version but anything i should know before getting into it /v/ ?
>>
>>261607976
It is very hard at the start of the game.

Mostly because your units are very weak and have no skills of any sort. You will die a lot.

After the first chapter though, things get easier.
>>
battles take fucking forever. it's pretty much the only thing that hinders me from enjoying srpg
>>
Check the guides for unlocking jobs, you might have a hard time unlocking them without knowing which jobs to level up
>>
>>261607976
>shit gba version

That's a sequel that has nothing to do with this FFT.

Also what the guy above me said, it starts off hard. I recall not getting through Dorter Trade City the first time I played it, but I was retarded and 12.
>>
>>261607976

That was a spiritual successor, not a port. It's also fucking great.

my apologies. I misspoke.

Rotate your saves between 3 files. There are certian parts in the game where if you only have 1 or duped files you get completely fucked if you cant beat the whole sequence.

If you can get past Dorter Slums, you will be able to beat the game

Random battles match your character level average, so grinding is useless for that

Story battles are hard-coded levels, so you can potentially grind them if you have too many problems.

This, of course, only matters if you're bad at TRPGs. Godspeed
>>
Watch the first few episodes of HCBailly's playthrough, he explains the mechanics really well.
>>
>>261609956
Also, there are solo battles, and if your MC doesn't have some of the jobs, thou art fucked.
>>
Play 1.3, if you get the time.
>>
It's feminist bullshit.

Perfumes are way OP.
>>
>>261607976
Multiple saves. Could be a lifesaver.
>>
If you grind too much the game becomes a complete joke.
Don't make the main character a caster or support class.
>>261609956
Don't do this. Unless you're so dumb you would try to unlock new wizard classes by leveling Knight.
>>
>Get characters with compatible zodiac signs

Be sure to train up a Thief and get Steal Accessory to steal dem perfumes. Most of them are unique and you're only given one chance to steal them.

Get ready for the framerate to chug during certain skills. It doesn't matter what you are running it on, the game engine just cant handle some of the skills used in the game very well.

>More classes in the PS1 ver

Nah nigga, the PSP version has the same classes + a couple new ones (Dark Knight and Onion Knight). The only thing it does about the classes is that it ups the requirements to unlock them (say, in PS1 version you needed lv. 2 archer to become a thief; in the PSP version you need a lv. 3 archer to become a thief and so on) as well as ramping up the prices for some skills, which is really fucking annoying, but still not that huge.
PSP version is not all that bad, but I do prefer the PS1 version myself. Maybe because of nostalgia + the soundtrack sounds kinda botched in the PSP version imo.

The Playstation version has a flawed and weak Engrish translation that actually cuts some dialog out of the game. Read this translation as you play, and try to find a middle ground through the dialog.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197339-final-fantasy-tactics/faqs/48627

I'm being quite serious when I say that this translation will help make for a better experience. Just ignore the bullshit the author inserted for FF12 like Humes.

Oh, and remember to take all the equipment off Gafgarion before the second battle of Act 2 - Ramza needs his shit more than he does, and Agrias eventually leaves the party when you get to that city with the Cardinal so remember to rob her too before she's gone. Towards the end of Act 3 there's a major difficulty spike where you have some super tough battles consecutively, with a battle where Ramza has a solo duel while separated from your team, and a few missions later when you enter the castle Ramza has to have a pure 1v1 duel that can be challenging before then turning into a team fight which is an absolute nightmare if you're not prepared. Oh, and immediately after that fucking tough mess you have another special battle where you lose if a character dies, while having to fight special enemies that can 1-hit ko you. Bring characters with high movement speed (ninja) and unlimited jump (from Dragoons)

Look, it's not ideal, but it helps make the story a lot better, I promise. I mean, what the fuck is a Nanten or Hokuten anyway? This translation gets points on that stuff alone.

> I've always really hated "Hokuten" and "Nanten". These are Japanese words for "North Sky" and "South Sky", and sound misplaced in a quasi-medieval setting. The Hokuten and Nanten, are, directly translated from Japanese "The Northern Sky Knight Troop" (Hokuten Kishidan) and "The Southern Sky Knight Troop" (Nanten Kishidan). Instead of this, I use "Knights of the Northern Skies" or "Knights Aquilor" (based on the northern wind, Aquilo), and "Knights of Southern Skies" or "Knights Austeron" (based on the southern
wind, Auster).

Protip for grinding at any level:

Get into random battle.
Beat down monsters and goons until there is only one left.
Bring it down to minimal health.
Monster/goon will run and hide in corner of the map and just wait every turn (unless it can heal itself, fucking yellow chocobos)
Have your own party smack each other around and heal eachother until you can't stand it anymore.

You won't get much gil, but you won'thave to click the overmap hoping for battles. It works well cuz merely causing damage or healing, even 1 HP, will get you XP and JP. You only get bonuses for killing.

Also note that when a class gains JP, everyone else on your side gains 1/4 of the gained JP as well. That's why if you had a lancer who gained 1000 JP over the course of the fight, everyone else would get 250 JP to lancer as well, even if they don't have the class unlocked yet.

So if you only want to train one guy's class, make everyone that class and just gain JP with all of them. Remember to equip JP Up as well. Likewise, if you need someone to learn two jobs at once, just make sure they participate with characters of another job so they gain JP in that one too.

Squire ends up being Ramza's default class. His custom version of Squire ends up being ridiculously overpowered, especially with all the class-buffs and extra powers.

Just tack on a few class abilities and let him loose.

I actually liked the weird dialogue they used for their attack and spells, it felt like an ancient prayer or incantation that of course wouldn't come off as normal in whatever era FFT takes place in.

I hated attack lines at one part -- the opening battle where all you control is Ramza. You still have to hang around and manually skip them because even if you put it on auto battle, it doesn't skip the dialog automatically.

Other than that, I'm pretty neutral about it all.

There's 2 versions of 1.3, the good version and the shitty version. The shitty version which is found at insanedifficulty or the good version which used to be hosted at ffhacktics. Shitty version changes black mages and archers to be bullshit OP classes, removes a lot of the difficulty but punishes grinding too much and in general is a shitty patch. The good version is, however, harder to find, but if you do find it go for easy type (which doesn't make the game easier, it just doesn't make it impossible to beat if you gain more than 1 level per battle).

Wiegraf can be beaten by Monk Ramza with his squire secondary.

Chakra + move HP up to heal, Yell for when you aren't dead, and keep moving.

On the other hand, it makes the boss battle right after piss easy because A: Monk Ramza OP, and B: You keep all of your buffs/debuffs when it transitions, including the insane speed upping you'll be doing.

Max speed is 50

I didn't realize it as a kid either, then again I sorta ignored the whole plot. Played it years later and I see it all for what it is. Wiegraf even went out of his way to tell the rest of his people not to kidnap and ransom or pull stupid shit but they did anyway. Then people like Ramza who are raised with strict expectations and in an ill informed society end up fucking up people he probably would have sided with.
>sister is kidnapped and with the worst people possible for a long time
>one brother turns into a monster he has to kill
>another brother becomes an undead monstrosity that begs for death
>friends die, people who could have been friends die, his own family disowns him
>his best friends has gone a completely separate path
>the world declares Ramza an enemy
>his entire country is falling apart at every seam
>history writes him off as a lying piece of shit and kills anyone who says otherwise
>fights the devil and her council
>never breaks down and never stops fighting for what he believes is right even if he's never rewarded

Ramza had a hard life. Everyone had a hard life.

You didn't fuck up Wiegraf, the nobles in power, his own thugs, and then even he somewhat fucked it up.

The nobles for starting this whole mess by turning their backs on them, and the thugs for turning to attacking innocents and giving ruining the image of the entire movement.

Ramza gets involved when they start asking for ransoms and kidnapping small children. Wiegraf is 100% against it and makes it known so very clearly, but he doesn't take strong enough control of his operation and they just keep doing shitty things that makes them all look bad.

This is why I still consider Ramza as one of the greatest FF protagonist in any game. He began the game when he was at around 16 and finished it at around his early 20's, and he never complained, whined or had emo moments. Instead, he got shit done despite everything basically screaming "FUCK YOU RAMZA" at every turn. He just took everything and kept fighting for what he believed in despite his own brothers and everyone else believing that he was a heretical piece of shit that was literally Hitler and the scum of the Earth.
I only wish we could have another protag as based as Ramza in another FF

>>261636509
I've played 2 on the Ps1, and the Wii one. The PS1 game has partner characters which are pretty useful (although if a monster kills anything, from one of your AI buddies to another monster, they level up instantly), and you can summon more with feathers (which are randomly granted for breaking your equipment, so expect to never get any). Also, if you have a second controller in you can have a friend play the partner character. They can move anywhere on screen before you make your move and attack once/turn (but they can't use the AI's special abilites, like Mog's steal or Shiroma's much needed healing)

The Wii version has extra challenge levels (most of which you have to do to advance the story) and plenty of extra stuff to explore before postgame. Also an entire minigame corner. The only thing I have with it is that you have to go back to re-beat dungeons to get summon stones. The story is also a bit more coherent. ALSO, there's a class system, but don't be fooled the only class you need is white mage for heal, holy, auto-raise, and my personal favorite the ability to charge up extra ability points.

Gameplay-wise, both are pretty good.

One thing I wanna add is that it's a must to save empty bottles in the PS1 game.

You can collect monster essence by killing them with an empty bottle, and that can work wonders when it comes to equipment crafting.

That and teleport tags are the best kicking items. If you have more than one teleport tag you can teleport troublesome enemies away by kicking a spare at them. The item kicking applies for both games.

>And how am I supposed to get better
Where are you stuck? Chapter 1 is actually the hardest chapter in the game. Specifically, the Dorter Slums with the black mages on the roof and the knight on the ground. That battle is meant to teach the player to not dive balls deep. Sometimes letting the enemies inch toward you (to disadvantageous terrain) is preferable to getting assfucked from the rooftops.
>>

It's not overly long, unless you're looking to fully upgrade your equipment, but maybe 20 hours if you don't rush it. I myself have almost 90 hours logged in, but I've beaten it three times already, and the last one, I was writing down the entire script, which was particularly time consuming because there's small choices in the game, and there's also a New Game+ feature where the game gets harder and every enemy drops new weapons, the chests get refilled, there's more areas to visit, and an alternate ending to unlock. It's more of a traditional RPG though, very different from Matsuno's usual SRPGs or VS/FFT, but it FEELS like an Ivalice game, because he got his old team mostly back together, except Yoshida didn't draw the characters and monsters. And it's like a VN outside of combat, but I'm sure that won't be a negative for you if you're a fan of Matsuno's writing.
>>
>>261651487
>It's more of a traditional RPG though, very different from Matsuno's usual SRPGs or VS/FFT

I like dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, The Dark Spire, or Grimrock. Is it close to those?
>>
>>261652978
Its something like that.

You're given a drawing of a map and you select which room you'd like to move to from the current room. The top screen shows a static camera of that room, and theres lots of split path ways.

In combat, you select actions and roll dice in a tray on the bottom screen, think Table Top RPG style. It works pretty well and its pretty fun.

Really, the writing and combat is where the game shines the most, the combat is fun and rewarding, you might have to try some battles more than once because they can be difficult. The dialog is the quality you'd expect from a Matsuno game, spot on.

Well, outside of combat, you choose a part of the map to go to, and your party walks there and then a narrator describes the room and then if there's a chest, then you can open it, or have your rogue/ranger character unlock it, which prompts a dice roll where you manually roll the dice with the stylus, which is a mechanic used quite a bit in the game, being a big homage to tabletop RPGs and all.

In combat, it's a mostly typical turn-based RPG, where you can do a physical attack, use magic or skills, and can use the multisided dice to enhance either your accuracy or your attack power. Each skill is tied to an element, and chaining elements, by using ones that don't cancel others, you can get more multisided dice, starting with a d4, then d6, and so on.

All in all, I think you'll enjoy it greatly, from the look.

Yup. He's phoning it in quite literally. He's not on-site or anything to write the story.

>His name is the only reason they got money, right?
Most of it, probably. There are a lot of people around who are trying to fight to be the "next Final Fantasy Tactics."

To be honest, out of all of them, Massive Chalice is probably the most promising. Unfortunately it's got the whole humans vs. demons shit that FFT and TO devolved into halfway, but it's right at the beginning. Anyway, judge for yourself:

>Yup. He's phoning it in quite literally. He's not on-site or anything to write the story.
Thats a shame, and kind of misleading. On their website they talk about how Matsuno is excited to be able to make another rich, new world. Like he'd be part of creating the story, world and lore. Glad I didn't back the project.

Matsuno said he's developing the combat and the job system along with the handlebar mustache dude, and he's writing the entire scenario of the game, all the lore and backstory of the game's world, Rasfalia, Akihiko Yoshida's drawing the characters and monsters, and Hitoshi Sakimoto is composing the soundtrack. That I wish it was Hiroyuki Ito working with Matsuno on the combat/jobs, you fucking bet, but he's still working in Square, and Matsuno's not leaving that on that guy's hands.

>>261658140
Vagrant Story really was a perfect game. The gameplay, the story, the plot.

A game played over the course of a couple of days, with a story unfolding and becoming more complex, making you second guess everything you were told. And all the political undertones that show a world in a cold war, nation against nation. Leaders using men as tools for murder and control.

Combat that rewards good decisions, and punishes the bad with crafting that means one weapon isn't going to be able to stomp on everything.

The cinematography was amazing for that kind of game, I still get chills watching the intro cutscene. And I'll be damned if Alexander O. Smith ever makes a bad translation. Thank christ Matsumoto work is always being translated by him.
>>
>>261658597
Maybe after this development he'll join Mistwalker and we'll see another surge in the golden age of RPGs. I wonder if anyone's asked him if he's considered it.
>>
>>261657724
If this >>261649693 is any indication, I'd say it's the very opposite. Despite the incredible limitations imposed on him and the other devs who worked for the Guild01 project to cram four games into one 3DS cartridge, he really put a lot of effort and love into the game, even if it could be better. But it shows how creative he is when he's working under restrictions.

The gameplay's one of the highlights of the game though. The only people who say otherwise are people who play RPGs for the story and don't want to bother with the gameplay mechanics or the intricacies of the game. There's also more exploring, and item crafting, and boss fights and learning and exploiting enemy weaknesses and such than there are story cutscenes, which are never very long either. If you've played Demon's Souls, then you might have a slight idea what it is to play it, though it's more tactical and the game has a rhythm-based pausable real time combat system. But really, just get it on PSN and dive in. You won't regret playing it.

This is basically my favorite game.

At times it is complete bullshit though.

Before the 3rd battle you NEED an archer or black mage or it's gonna be really painful

Try to kill those fucking archers at the top of the tower without aggroing anything else before doing anything because they seem to have unlimited range.

Monk, Ninja, Squire, some Dragoon passives abilities, and black/white/time/summoner mages are the best classes.

Don't make too many characters because the story characters you get can easily carry you through the game unless you neglect them.

ALWAYS USE AGRIAS AND ORLANDU.

MUSTADIO IS USEFUL BUT NOT SO MUCH ENDGAME.

AGRIAS IS BEST GIRL.

What's so hard for you to understand about "You've been less than we from the moment your baseborn father fell upon your mother in whatever gutter saw you sired! You've been chattel since you came into the world drenched in common blood!"? Middle and Old English is way more confusing, and the game doesn't even use thous, thys, thines, etc. either so I don't get it when people say this.
>>
>>261679134
Nothings hard to understand about it. Alexander O. Smith is really good at using modern English in a way that makes us feel we're in a medieval fantasy setting without using cryptic language. The guy you're replying to is just an idiot.

PSP with the slowdown patch. Having 24 character slots lets you have all the story characters without dismissing/killing some of your starting generics. Also: vastly improved translation.

Too bad there's no patch to fix the lack of reverb

Yes, random battles are easily far harder than any storyline battle.
>>
>no random lines for certain sword arts or spells in the PSP version
For as long as I've been playing it, I KNEW something was off about this version. I thought it might have been a feature I turned off and not something that permanently disabled. Darn, I would have liked to see how they did the translations for those.

"Iconic lines" can go to hell if it means a better translation overall.

This is like the people complaining about Castlevania Symphony of the Night retranslations not having "What is a man?"

Yes, using the livepatch CFW plugin

yes, the "patch" isn't actually applied to the game file, it's loaded in CFW and changed how it reads the game data since the slowdown was coded into a part of the game that was hard to modify

He probably would have joined if Adramelech didn't kill him/teleported him away/whatever.

His Arc Knight class had some rather unique abilities too, like having non-Squire reaction and support abilities unlike every other special class in the game.

Zalbag did see the error of his ways, he just killed by Dycedarg when he used the Zodiac Stone. And was forced to become a zombie to stop you from killing Ultima later.

That's the "weak" version of Ultima. Ultima herself casts a much larger version in her first form and casts the even larger "Divine Ultima/All-Ultima" in her final form.

Does the date on the world map mean anything?

I've played for like 16 hours and I'm only nearing the end of the prologue/flashback. I'm going after thieves. Just fought that chick that I already beat who then ran away.

I rarely win a battle the first time playing it. Not knowing the stage, or choosing a team that unknowingly will get destroyed, or my attacks all just fucking missing is keeping me to repeat fights over and over.

I also don't understand why sometimes my mages need to charge a spell and then sometimes while casting that same spell they don't need to.

I don't understand this game.
>>
>>261691673
If you want to increase the speed of your spells have Ramza use Yell to increase their speed stat for the fight. And why it takes longer depends on your opponent's speed stats. A thief or Chocobo will most likely be faster than a Black/White Mage in most cases.
>>
>>261692118

Spells have a set speed. Only the Time Mage support ability Swiftness makes them faster.
>>
>>261691673
>Does the date on the world map mean anything?
You can send people on errands to earn jp and gold and sometimes get things that are for flavor text in the Brave Report
>or my attacks all just fucking missing
Stop attacking from the front and always attack from behind if your can
>I also don't understand why sometimes my mages need to charge a spell and then sometimes while casting that same spell they don't need to.
Don't listen to this guy>>261692118 spells have a charge time measured in clock ticks, every clock tick each unit's CT gauge increases by the amount of speed they have, increasing speed has no effect on how long an ability that needs to charge takes to charge, only the ability short charge affects it.
>>
>>261692498
>>261692706

>>
>>261692989
no, it didn't
the CT system had no change with the PSP retranslation
>>
>>261693156
Well fuck. Then forgive my ignorance, I don't know why, but my spells would take less turns even though I rarely ever touched the Time Mage and mostly just used Yell.
>>
