In Twilight Princess, the ice dungeon is a cabin in the woods belonging to two Yeti, a man and a woman who love each other. The entire cabin has frozen over due to her becoming possessed, and shunning her husband, leaving the relationship meaningless. In the dungeon, no hearts can be found, and the weapon you receive is the Ball and Chain.

In the Pokemon world, the region of Orre is peculiar. There are a number of settlements established throughout the region with a sizable population, but without natural resources for food or water, it does not make much sense that people would make the settlements where they are. Additionally, the areas where people are living are broken down, disheveled, and effectively breaking down, as evident in the amount of rust and damage. Not only that, but the entire region is abnormally arid and dry, without a starkly low number of wild Pokemon to be found, even though other desert area throughout the world have booming populations of Pokemon adapted for the environments. It would seem, then, that something happened rather recently to cause this change in living conditions for humans and Pokemon.

Now, consider that in Red and Blue, which happens at the same time as Colosseum, Lt Surge references a war that happened, and considering that he is not an old man we can surmise that his war happened recently. What if the war had been between Orre and Kanto? Perhaps Kanto unleashed some sort of weapon of mass destruction on Orre, winning the war. This would explain the suddenly arid climate, and as a result native species would not have the time to adapt to the new situation. It would also explain why the settlements still exist in otherwise uninhabitable locations, they were simply there before the devastation. This also explains why crime is much more rampant in the region, as the loss of the war crippled the region's economy, and as a result more citizens turned to a life of crime to get by.

One interesting tidbit is that most reflections in the game use a distorted picture of Mother 64's Oshoe Castle for the effect.

It's a damn shame HAL didn't just go finish the game with Itoi right after Smash. We could have gotten a GameCube Mother 3.
