For those of you who actually played Warcraft III on Battle.net in its prime, was this not the best game of all time?
I'm not talking about the campaign (which I did enjoy) or the regular matches, but the custom games that players created.
The custom games on Battle.net had everything! They even created entire genres of other games! The WorldEditor allowed for so much creativity and ingenuity to appear on Battle.net. I don't think I've ever played another game that had such a massive variety of options to choose from. I was able to play it off and on for years and it still kept itself interesting.
It's really a shame though that we will never see another game like it. It was so sad to see the community slowly dissolve into nothing but bot hosted DotA games.
>Starcraft II was a soul-crushing letdown and a shadow of what Battle.net could have been.
Kodo tag was rad! I liked golem tag too. The basic ones before they got too insane with custom buildings and cheaty maps were the best.
Waugrif's was sooo good. But it seemed like my saves only worked like 60% of the time.
My favorite MOBA will always be Battleships!
>Stand alone BATTLESHIPS WHEN?!
Also was anyone else a big fan of Island Defense? My friend and I used to play the shit out of it. Too bad it was one of those really high skill curve games so it usually turned into a steamroll one way or the other.
There was one custom game that came out relatively recently that had a variety of ways to make money, either by regional buying and selling, hunting, and farming. Players who died without a home base became bandits. Anyone remember the name? Because that game was good.
WC3: TFT Battle.net was THE game to play. I miss that shit so much. So many great custom games to be played.
Line Tower Wars
Life of a Peasant
Real Life For Morons
The hide and seek one where a bunch of you play as an ent and build a base while trying to hide from 3 other players
Best RPG: TKoK Eastern Kingdom I swear to god, the environment and quests in that one were so cash
Best Arena: pudge wars
Best TD: Wintermaul/WM Wars, fuck you if you say anything else
Best "Tag": Parasite/Island Tag
Best "MOBA": Battleships CS
Also best LOAP: Real Life (for morons)
Starcraft II has great custom games.
I played WC3 extensively, had over 2000 games played, 3 150 win icons, one 750 win icon, one 350 win icon, and every race's 25 win icon. also tourny icons to infernal.
Stop being a faggot.
Too bad they play nothing but trash maps all fucking day. I try to suggest something good like island defense/fortress survival/shopping maul/etc and they just want to play stupid fucking maps like ESCAPE FROM GAY HEAVEN and DARK DEEDS and COTDRP
>Best game of all time
>But only because of the custom games
I don't understand your logic, WC3 was a pretty slow RTS with inflated health pools so casuals wouldn't cry about their units dying 'too fast' and generally unwanted RPG mechanics that continue to plague Blizzards idea of an RTS (Kerrigan being a LoL hero in SC2 for example...)
I find it a fallacy to call it the best game when the only thing that excelled is the user created content, you're giving Blizzshit way too much credit when you word it that way.
I remember that. Fuck that shit. The maps list was completely flooded with DotA all the time. All of them would instantly kick you if you didn't have the map downloaded already.
Nobody makes custom games for map editors anymore. Tools for making games used to be scarce back in the day.
Nowdays you can just pickup unity and make your own game, and actually sell it to make money.
I swear to god, every faggot wants to play it just to build their own little base, once you start RPing they either close the gates and act like they aren't there or leave.
>tfw Dota 2 mapmaker will bring about another golden age of custom maps
>tfw WC4 will be created free of Blizzard's taint
Based Gaben, take me now.
Escape, Dark Deeds, and COTDRP are all good games though. I mean, I'm 100% behind you on it being bullshit that that's all they play, but it's nice to play them every once in a while though.
Sidebar, what was the game where you built windmills in wood fence squares for income and were continually raided by more powerful monsters and knights as time went on? Let's Build a Kingdom? I always enjoyed that but never managed to win.
Darwin's Island was always a blast, especially when multiple people reached Godhood and battled it out. I dug Enfo's as well, it's too bad nobody has taken an approach at that kind of Hero Wave Defense game where two teams generally dick with one-another.
>Starcraft II has great custom games.
It really doesn't and it was doomed either way as Blizzard planned to charge players money to 'buy' custom maps if they were popular enough. Fortunately real gamers stayed the fuck away from that shitsequel and the custom map scene never got a shred of talent.
Plus I always liked Nintendo TD because you could build something before a short cinematic and then get all your gold back when the cinematic ended.
While I agree SC2's customs weren't nearly as fun as WC3 overall they definitely had some gems. That Space Battleship game was fun as fuck until everyone started treating it as the next DOTA and the community started to twist into a mirror of DOTA's as a result.
I loved the hero arena's and I remember people made like Final Fantasy hero arena's and other such gaming themed ones
the rpgs were kinda fun too, the world of warcraft one was great, I remember that DBZ one too
If you counted all the battle.net custom games then yes, it would probably be my favorite game of all time
>Escape, Dark Deeds, and COTDRP are all good games though
Oh man I wish Enfos had its own standalone game like what Dota/LoL got. I would play the shit out of it
>No matter how hard I try to get into it's arcade games, they just aren't the same as WC3's custom games.
It's very rare for online games to have a good community anymore unless the game is either very new or has a very limited demographic.
Online communities have generally gone to shit, it's no longer mind blowing to be able to play vidya with people thousands of kilometers away from you, everyone takes it for granted and gets high off the anonymity. Too many suburbanites that are entitled to their 'right to the internet'. The original Battle.net existed during the wild west days when an internet connection that was both fast and stable was not the norm.
most of the people on /v/ are too scrub to actually play, they just talk about it.
last time i hosted some maps, literally everyone but me was terrible. some one leak only survival td's? everyone but me is wiped out by round 2. arena maps? i always win. survival/one guy vs the rest maps? i win.
sure it probably sounds like i'm bragging, but i'm not even fucking good at wc3 customs, i usually lose most games that aren't team based like wintermaul, but /v/ manages to make me look like a fucking pubstar.
Don't you have a $60 'content patch' to be buying? Gotta save up for those skins and mounts ;)
>mfw I ran games on the Europe servers for SotDRP and organized everyone, making sure to kick and banlist anyone disruptive or of low quality
>my games had people in fucking queues to join, had to select the ones whose turn it was
>I personally made sure that there was always some world event that everyone could join in, if people weren't mingling by themselves
>fun for hours upon hours
And that's how I knew I was going to become the leader of the Fourth Reich
When do the Dota 2 custom games get released?
Appearently there is a hero line wars and team survival game
This and Dawn of War 1/2 were my only serious attempts at competitive RTS.
I like small numbers of units. The sheer swarm-spam of Starcraft 2 turns me off. I am just not idiot savant enough to manage that much shit.
I really hope Warcraft comes back to the RTS game. This game was truly enchanting. I got to play some of the first tower defense games that ever existed on battle.net! How cool is that?
Footmen Frenzy, Hero Line Wars (version 1.72 or something like that?), and Hell vs Heaven/Angel Arena were the fucking bomb.
I probably have a couple thousand hours in TFT in custom games alone.
Not soon enough, it's going to be so much better than the WC3 map scene.
>running and organizing WC3 RP games
Son, I hate to tell you....
Like fuck they will when blizzard can shit out more WoW updates
Especially now with HotS. Maybe, MAYBE we'll see a warcraft rts themed dota custom
The problem with warcraft 3 is that there were too many good customs to remember
I still cant believe this doesnt have an official release
I-I'm sure Heroes will treat the IP with the proper respect and dignity...
>Starcraft II was a soul-crushing letdown
Why everyone on /v/ keeps repeating this?
I played a bit of customs on SC2 and damn, some of them are pretty amazing.
Is there something I don't know about?
Did anyone else here play the movie maker game? Did anyone ever actually have a full game of that?
What about the DnD game where everyone picked heroes and went through a tutorial area while the DM littered different zones with monsters and treasure? Anyone ever actually have a fucking full session of that shit either?
Can one of you who know some stuff about the emerging dota 2 customs scene explain like, how the editor is and stuff? I'm really excited but was afraid that the tools they released would be too complicated for beginners. I love complex custom maps, but sometimes it's really nice to jump into just a really shit, half assed tower defence
What do you expect from a Riot/Blizzard shiteater?
Parody+Milk it to death
>Skin variation - $20
>Mount - $20
>Unlock hero -$20
The saddest part is that they think they're being subtle when they pull shit like this.
>I'm not talking about the campaign (which I did enjoy) or the regular matches
no OP, even THAT was perfect. the game was fucking perfect, and the custom maps took it beyond the scope of a simple 9/10 game. i payed 40$ for this fucking game and got at least a 6k hours into it, it ruined ever other game for me because it was to little for to much when compared to wc3
wc3tft was the best game ever made, and maybe one day i can be a villager in a land full of strife again. maybe one day
>I'm not talking about the campaign (which I did enjoy) or the regular matches, but the custom games that players created.
Opinion fucking discarded
>muh garry's mod
How much money do they pay you, and do you have to extract it from gabes obese asscrack?
>he doesn't own all their base
Played a brilliant TD map back in the day when your goal was to protect a single defenceless unit from getting killed by the oncoming waves by weaving back and forth between your twoers. Think it was called "Runner!", damn I miss it.
A lot of the Warcraft properties look retarded to try and make them more like their dota 2 counterparts
Except Drow Ranger was based on the Dark Ranger model, not the Priestess of Elune. Do a little research next time before shilling so hard.
Well I somewhat remember that, but he sure wasn't defenseless if it's what I'm thinking of. 4 square spawn boxes in the 4 cardinal directions, one person for each spawn and then two extra tower builders plus one guy playing the hero peasant with lots of abilities like War Stomp, Shockwave, Storm Bolt, Avatar, Reincarnation, Stat Boost, Thunderclap, and Chain Lightning.
>For those of you who actually played Warcraft III on Battle.net in its prime
Alright, a Warcraft III thread!
>I'm not talking about the campaign
Alright, the multiplayer was definitely the meat of the game.
>or the regular matches
>but the custom games that players created
Every fucking time. Did any of you faggots every actually play the game instead of your shitty RP games and DotA clones?
I was talking about the models in general, even though I didn't notice that it was supposed to be Tyrande, which is kinda retarded, why did they dismount her?
Also you ought to stop calling everybody who says anything that doesn't reflect your opinion a shill.
>play la2 all days
>friend invites to play some WC3 custom map
>it's la2 map
>mfw it was more fun than actual game
WC3 custom maps were seriously based
Also remember MarvelTD, some RPG map were you could save your char and play him later, some racing map and dota ofc.
at least night elves and especially orc are fun to play, undead is the most boring race ever.
FIENDS TO FROSTIES AND DESTROYERS EVERY GAME
you can get other stuff sure but why would you
Kodo tag/Sheep tag/That one 'tag' with the bugs
Real life for morons (LoaP can suck it)
Island troll tribes
That Goblin survival map
Pimp my Peon
Heros and Empires
WC3 in it's prime is WC3 before DotA/Autorefresh/Hosting bots ruined it.
Right now it requires basic programming knowledge. It takes time to become familiar with the functions and commands necessary to do the more complex stuff.
It's a bit too complex for the average user at the moment, but it is still in beta and they are adding and patching things all the time. Spending a bit of time learning it is rewarding, but I don't think you'll see a whole lot of those half baked maps at this stage.
I played the game. It was fun on the lower ends when I could do more varied builds and didn't have to do one specific starting build. Where I could actually use different heroes. It was nice to be able to play low ladder matches and start Paladin instead of Archmage 100% of the time, or have a Shaman + Tauren only build.
Higher ladder was just too cookie cutter for my liking and I wasn't a God Tier player so I couldn't stomp higher tiers using only what I liked.
I just hope they dumb it down a bit, not because I'm retarded and need someone to baby me, but a lot of the charm of wc3 customs to me was the amount of diversity because anyone could make a map if they spent a little of time working on it.
Custom games were great, too bad dota ruined b.net.
Best of all time though? Nah.
But I'd pay 60 dollars for a standalone castle fight game.
>not being Necros and Siege Wagons + Lich only
Raising dat army all day err day.
>mfw spamming possession on workers and building an army of Shammies, Frosties and Knights
>mfw no face
expected map editor to get
more awsome in SC2
CasualZaard failed horribly..
and then Diablo 3
god bring BLZ-North back ffs
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, this is seriously what volvo drones believe.
>volvo will suddenly do a 180 and change everything about the editor
You speak the truth anon.
It doesn't matter if this kind of experience will come again.
What matters is that we all had the best of times. And that is enough.
I was lvl 51 and top 20 in solo northend.
The only topplayer i could never beat though was grubby, but i beat him in sc2 though.
I was also responsible for the discovery of the discbug that lead to the dischack a few weeks later.
Nothing like having 7-1 in the preliminary round and ending up in 17th place below 16 players with the exact same stats.
But when you finally reach the ro16 for once, the hype is off the charts.
>Blizzard sues Valve to try and steal basic concepts for Dota, fails horribly
>Bitterly releases a shitty LoLclone game
>NAH TYRANDE HAVING WHITE HAIR AND DARK SKIN IS JUST A COINCIDENCE
oh fuck me dont tell me
/v/ is full of blizzfags
look i loved D2 and Wc3
but face it they became casual
like a mother fuckers
>For those of you who actually played Warcraft III on Battle.net in its prime, was this not the best game of all time?
But it is almost cheating.
It's like saying the SNES was the best video game of all time.
The library of Warcraft 3 custom games are so diverse and vast that I don't think most people even realize.
Yesterday I showed a map to a friend who even played Warcraft 3 and he didn't realize it was possible.
>Starcraft II was a soul-crushing letdown and a shadow of what Battle.net could have been.
The change in the user agreement to protect the maps rather than the assets, the shitty bnet 2.0 without channels, and the popularity system when it came to browsing, the harder to use editor turned many away both new and experienced mappers.
yes, it was easily the best
i enjoyed everything about this game. the campaigns, the normal ladder game, and the funmaps
It was great, but it was not without it's flaws. It was hard to navigate and a lot of shitty games were popular, and it was a hard to find a good game at higher levels unless you organized your own friends.
That said there was nothing quite like it, except for Starcraft.
I won several of those in 2005, and one time with the help of a discbug i accidentially found. These tourneys was the reason hackers noticed that and build a dischack based on the information i gave on a german forum to explain the situation.
once again you prove yourself to be one of the worst tripfags, mostly because you've been here for what seems like a decade, and you used to be cool.
Castle fight, seriously? one of the worst fucking maps? Jesus, your taste is garbage. You probably like that unbalanced as fuck 13attleships too.
Sometimes Blizz sends a wave of virals over here, you gotta be on your guard. These 'nostalgia' threads are typically just thinly veiled ways to turn people towards SC2
>H-hey I thought the Arcade™ was pretty fun
Best Tag: Tree Tag
Best AoS: Dota, Battletanks
Best Mystery(Dark Deeds etc): Metastasis
Best Strategy Map: Solar Conquest
Best TD: SOS TD
Best Arena: Spellcraft
Best RPG: Sols Open RPG
Dark Deeds, FMVH(Force Majeure Vampire Hunters), 11th Vampire, Cube TD, Warlock, Battlecruiser Command,
>>The change in the user agreement to protect the maps rather than the assets, the shitty bnet 2.0 without channels, and the popularity system when it came to browsing, the harder to use editor turned many away both new and experienced mappers.
That and Blizzard is a soulless greedy hive of shills, nobody with any dignity would use or promote their products.
This. WC1/2 were amazing and I still don't understand how Blizzard was retarded enough to dumb it down for WC3 and introduce the clusterfuck hero system. The fact Blizzard thought they could balance four races just shows how arrogant and inept they were, even back then.
I mean, removing ships and naval combat? What the actual FUCK?
>implying my entire army is comprised of nothing but aboms and gargoyles
get out you fucking trench shitter, you're a retard if you don't make use of every single unit in the army
the primary assault force and the brunt of the damage comes from 12 aboms 12 gargs SUPPORTED by things, you scrub.
It had its flaws.
>weekly balance patched that made some race OP and another UP
>balance drama on the forums which got flooded into oblivion with shit like
>chat channel drama
>trolls in random team so stick to 1v1
but yeah it was fuck
Oh yeah, I remember that. I think one of them was made by a guy named stabguy or something.
Still, I'm digging the BNet tournaments. It's a shame they didn't include those in sc2. They're way more fun to play in since you don't have to wait forever for your opponents to finish or show up at all.
all of those are garbage though
do you even play any maps that are actually very difficult like YouTD, which has 360 levels and then a neverending bonus mode, beating the map on extreme takes hours to complete
but i bet you'll continue playing your casual HLW and other garbage maps
Metastasis was better and last I heard the guy was disappointed with sc2 and worked on his standalone game.
Metastasis was a little more cutthroat and less noob friendly.
Died the first time before I could grab a weapon because I started with augmented legs that another guy wanted.
But once you git gud it is really amazing and Parasite 2 looks plain in comparison.
Infecting the bio section was sweet in Parasite though.
Metastasis is just so polished in so many ways though. Mutant, Alien and Android are handled pretty great, and the humans are more distinct.
Not to talk about all of the ships and the moving planet and moon.
ohhh fuck, i remember
>that fight over who can be green (Legolas)
>that hard as fuck start
>THE FUCKING CLICKING I CAN'T STOP PLS PLS SEND HELP
>CLICK CLICK CLICK
RIP my fingers
>its in a early stage thats the reason why its hard
Go try UE4 you faggot, it's in beta too and it's the second easiest tool to use.
You really think Blizzard made changes to the world editor, no they never bothered to. They only time they ever changed it was with TFT and a patch to remove a bug that allowed the editor to run exe files.
yes i'm mad, i don't like having over half the fucking game locked away behind a code, to the point where i need to grind for several hundred hours just to regain back the functionality EVERY PLAYER HAD in the old version.
Dota 2 custom will most likely die because the map format and hosting system will be horrible.
>You subscribe to a map
>So you can download it(it can several hundred megabytes in size)
>Lacks several metric tons of unit models
>No promise of a working host system
I know what youre talking about anon, the map alone totally blew it out of the water but the thing is parasite was run daily and i saw metastasis maybe once a week, even then it didnt always succeed in getting players before the host got bored
I had dial-up when I played this game.
Downloading a 20MB map or campaign at 2.5KB/s took 2 hours on a good day. I still played the hell out of the maps I could get though. Waiting for them was worth it because you knew they were almost always going to be fun.
>The fact Blizzard thought they could balance four races just shows how arrogant and inept they were, even back then.
Blizzard couldn't even balance the 2 races in WC2 even though they were 99% the same, Orcs were OP
>weekly balance patched that made some race OP and another UP
It's funny how Blizzard has never learned how retarded this is, in general it's strange how so many companies don't get it except for Valve.
>late in the game
>implying ghouls are for damage and not a meat wall with life leech and combat cannibalism
if they arent attacking your ghouls, then send them to eat up all their workers
though it is cute to see you guys who think you're better than me try to lecture me on how to play, as if you're an accredited WC3 professional.
it's too late to redeem yourself, just keep those things bottled up inside like an angry genie, and never release them. keep them trapped inside you, like a wretched fart that yearns to cross the nostrils of all in the room.
but hey, you aren't as bad as ruggarell who posted his tiny dick on /v/, and you aren't onsokumaru/soulja boy who are both niggers.
>on fucking balance of all things
Valve is fucking shit at balance.
>lets nerf stickies
>since demo is nerfed and both pyro and heavy are countered or counter him, lets nerf them too
>oh woops, people didnt like it, remove the nerf on stickies in less than a week
>i dont care about heavy and pyro
If you're talking about dota, that is Icefrog, not Valve.
>blizzard will make WC4 sooner or later,(probably when wow stops being profitable and goes F2P) specially now that most people accept this time traveling bullshit they are pulling on WoD
>it will be utterly shit because Blizzard is now a shell of it former self
all i want is WC3 to get a proper sequel that live up to how great the game was, and it's never gonna happend
not very effective against good players, but holy shit its an instant win against baddies, because even if you take some losses, you will ruin their economy before you run out of resources to poop ghouls in their base.
Not sure when you got into Metastasis but we had a ton of games.
There was an official bot, another guy had his bot but he took it down I think to avoid two half filled games.
The bot hosted cross realm, but also on some other russian servers to bring in other people.
Traffic was great for a longer time.
I even came back after half a year and still had games.
Today there's nothing though, but I haven't seen parasite either.
I can't remember perfectly, but I had a lot of full good games of metastasis.
>TF2 is so perfectly balanced that the slightest change has the disastrous effects on the games ecosystem
>So this means Valve is bad as balancing
I can't wrap my head around how stupid you Blizzshitters are.
Honestly, if i hadnt lost the code to my warcraft 3 id be playing custom games with /v/ right now.
Image you had to be able to perform at 80 cs/deny at 10 minutes in Dota, minimum, to not lose all games.
As a RTS, Warcraft succeded, but it also failed because custom was a lot more fun than actually learning how to play.
I honestly think Starcraft is easier to learn, just for the sake starcraft units are expandable compared to warcraft units.
>We have a 100% working scripting language, but we better not make a working container format and redistribution system
>Let it be a 5GB download just for a script & material editor
I was just in a LAN playing TFT. It was fun and now I'm slightly sad because I'm sitting alone in my home. I wish it was 2002-2004, easily the best years of my life playing TFT custom games non stop and I made few really good friends too.
Did you even read what we talked about? No one is saying that the editor is shit, people are saying that its hard to use. Most of the maps people played with Warcraft 3 was maps made using the GUI code system and not JASS. At the moment DotA 2 does not have anything like that. It was the creative people that made Warcraft 3's custom game what it was, not the programming people.
>Sold separately with 3 full prices 'Expansion packs' announced at launch
>$20 to unlock Panda and Pony races
>Everything is a pop culture reference
>Custom Map scene fully automated, you can't even host and have to submit maps to Blizzard after paying a 'Submission Fee'
>Using the Map editor requires a $4.99 monthly subscription
I never thought it would end. Like, I thougt WC3 was going to ruin my fucking life with how much I loved it. I sank thousands of hours into that game. It's almost surreal to think back to what a staple that was of my gaming routine.
And then it slowly filled with DotA, and bots, and map hackers, and all of the shit that ruined every Blizzard game (looking at you Diablo 2).
Blizzard was such a glorious company back then. The amount of games on WC3 made it its own fucking medium. WC3 wasn't a game, it was a platform.
Best online game? WC3 certainly could've been it, though I think TFC probably is also up there. Diablo 2 is great as well, but I don't actually remember playing much with random people on the internet, just a lot of co-op.
This isn't counting MMOs though, since those are on a different level entirely. They're not something you can just hop in and have fun with buddies on.
It's been hemorrhaging subscriptions, MoP was the worst expansion to date and WoD has taken 6 months longer than any other expansion to come out.
Only the most diehard shiteaters are left to chug down this time travel outland rehash.
your first 2 points are retarded. Are you actually bitching about having to subscribe to a mod so you can get updates? How is searching for [custom game] in the workshop different than searching for it on some other site?
Also, who gives as hit about the size.
>Did any of you faggots every actually play the game
Yes, but even before in starcraft the custom games were better.
>of your shitty RP games and DotA clones?
You're being dishonest or retarded if you think that was just what custom games were.
>Custom Map scene fully automated, you can't even host and have to submit maps to Blizzard after paying a 'Submission Fee'
I will never comprehend what they were thinking when they developed the new map system.
You can't even give your games a name so players know which modes/difficuly you're gonna pick, and sometimes they instantly leave after the game starts because they don't like the options you chose
there's a bot for it, it has a bit of a learning curve but it's one of the hardest tower defense maps out there
if you want hard maps for other genres, the latest enfos on hosting bots is pretty fucking tough, fortress survival on the hardest difficulty is extremely tough, the OLD hero line wars lition was good (back when the scorpions or whatever the first mob you spawn can easily kill you) keys of sealing is IMO the most difficult dota style game that isn't just dota itself (but i don't know if any hostbots run that one, all the aforementioned ones are currently being hosted by a bot in some form)
I don't think you even understand what the Warcraft III unit library did for the custom map scene.
Dota is currently 30-40 units short of being on the same page, and thats with allowing cosmetics to be put on the wrong heroes for diversity.
If it turns into everything packed with 100-200 megabytes of very shitty custom models, music and whatever, its going to be even worse.
Warcraft III had to stand on the fact that the graphics and music provided by default was good.
Seriously, come and say any of the Dota 2 music is good, because its bland shit at the moment.
Isn't arcade free though? SC2 is more massively disappointing than it is just bad (especially customs), but I thought you could play sc2's arcade for free so it's like who cares
Dude, I'm a fucking dota player.
>TF2 is so perfectly balanced
Yeah, that's why people barely changed from 2 scouts, 2 sold, 1 demo and 1 medic setup in i52 and several items are banned.
I think the heroes ruin the melee-games. In the end they get too strong and ruin all the fun. Custom games were at lot more fun even though I did enjoy watching some pro player replays.
>can't argue blizz been fucked since WC3
>picks some stupid shit
lol blizzfag u mad?
I actually streamed the wc3:roc campaign on hard for some friends, after a friend kept failing on stream on like the 4th human map on hard.
Final undead map was the first one I lost on.
Only lost once though and I was seconds I think away from succeeding.
It was less than a minute at most, but I think it was even less than 10 seconds left.
God damn siege tanks managed to ruin my infrastructure by destroying my Halls of the Dead and some other buildings so I couldn't build anything useful for too long.
Dota 2 has a lot of heros and a fair bit of summons, Warcraft 3 has four entire races, with lots of campaign only buildings and units.
Many more summons than in Dota 2
And a very substantial number of neutral creeps that added diversity, from demons to dragons to bandits to wizards.
>It's FREE too guys! Why aren't you playing Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm™ right now? They fixed EVERYTHING!
What does the quality of the music and the amount of units have to do with what I said? I never disputed your third point of the amount of available unit models that aren't heroes.
They've been fucked since day one.
All Blizz does is take a popular concept (Warhammer), polish up the UI to be super casual friendly and then load it with pop culture references. People just never noticed because they were too young to understand the references and weren't aware of the games Blizz was ripping off.
What is so bad about SC2?
/v/ had constant rank threads when it came out, and there used to be threads about matches and tourneys. I just fell off because I'm not big into RTS, but I assume it is still the king?
>Diablo 3 announced
>Nearly everything in the demo trailer is a lie (Good music, boss fatalities, cool shit like WD being able to infest his pets)
>Old Guard points out how bad the cartoony graphics look
>Instead of conceding the point Blizzard bitterly puts in a MLP level
>Game still sells 10 million copies
A piece of me died that day. A piece I'll never have back.
This. Both games were huge letdowns.
I really hope it's not just me being a nostalgiafag, but w3 just seemed so much fresher and more interesting. Sc2 was pretty much just another addon for sc1, d3 was completely uninteresting once you had beaten Inferno.
By the way, have they ever delivered the PvP arenas that they had promised years ago?
Do you know how undead in wc3 go Fiends to Frosties nearly every game despite the matchup? I found that the amount of strategy in sc2 was pretty minimal, and it was mostly twitch and muscle memory.
I dunno how it's been since heart of the storm came out, but in WoL you had like, just a few compositions that would actually work at high end play. Terran would either go mech if they felt like it, but would usually make a bioball and that was that. Protoss had their deathballs, and zerg had the least strategic choice at all since their gimmick is being able to counter an army quickly
>I was pretty annoyed that I was so close.
I had a small audience so I just thought it was funny and cursed.
It was exciting and fun to me and it is one of the more fun maps.
I always feel shitty for destroying Quel'Thalas and Dalaran though.
WoW was revealed before the release of wc3 and I imagined that I was gonna play a High Elf and then go to Dalaran and train magic.
i dont know if someone already said this, but dota2 modding tools came out several weeks ago, and people have started porting the w3 games that people who played dota also played.
the tools are getting a lot of praise, i dont remember the name of the subreddit discussing it but try to find it on r/dota2 first
I was ok with SC2 for the most part (Other than the campaign going full retard at a certain point and the always on/connected nature of the game with no LAN), and at that point in time I was somewhat disenfranchised with the new WoW expansions, but I don't think anything compares with the sheer betrayal I felt when Diablo 3 released (Well, maybe the butchering of Warcraft lore). I got a beta invite and there was just so many things wrong with the game compared to the predecessor. The classes made the game feel like an action game instead of an RPG with roguelike influences, the classes themselves were dull and boring and took no thought, the itemization stats weren't as detailed as the previous game, the art style was no longer a dark, gothic look, and the story was terrible. This was probably the only time I ever contemplated sending a letterbomb to someone for a fuck up of this magnitude.
not OP and I think he just stopped, but you used to could get in games pretty easy with Wtii if you know who he is. They do a lot of melee too but they do customs too, uther party ect
Does anyone remember the 'Dirty Tank Defenders' and 'Strip Sakura' etc maps from Brood War? Those games were GOAT during adolescence, the more objectives you completed, the more that the minimap would get revealed, which was arranged using an external program to look like porn.
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS CUSTOM RPG MAP IN WARCRAFT 3 where you pick from several heroes in the center of the map, level up around the world, then have to choose to ascend to godhood or build a town? The biggest thing I remember is that there was a bunch of old ones with tentacles and stuff in the northeast part of the map.
Pyramid Escape is actually a great way to start playing with a group of people, because it shows you how competent or willing to listen they are.
>your group does fairly well, listens if they haven't played before on certain minigames you nearly have to cheese, like the tower defence one
Then you can play pretty much any map and be fine.
>Your group can't even do the skeleton one or the one where you have to step on a colored rune button when a colored enemy appears
Then you should ditch that group and never play games with them again.
>hating tedious nerdy circlejerking bullshit
I will never understand how people managed to constantly fail at Quiz of Death.
Also, I always voted for Skeleton Curse as one of the first challenges since it already showed whether your team is competent or not.
>Run Kitty Run
>Awesome tower defense games
I always played the ones that started in SC BW. Holy fuck that transition from those lame ass "train for 15 mins then die in 15 seconds" DBZ maps to Tribute blew my fucking mind. Though, I almost liked the old Bound maps more than Run Kitty Run
Custom maps as they were in WC3 and SC are dead forever. Tools like Unity and UE3 are out for the public to use risk free and allow for even more flexibility in creation of games compared to what Blizzard's map editor allowed. What's more is that as those map creators got older, a good chunk of them actually developed skill in programming and have the capability to release their own games for profit.
So yeah, what we used to get as free custom maps for games we now get as cheap indie games.
It was made in a time before Open started to mean Save/Load mechanics which was the dumbest shit ever.
Sols ORPG vein of map existed in Starcraft as well, and there were others than Sol in wc3.
No idea which is the best version anymore.
It is a bit of a clusterfuck to find iirc.
It's gone, but that's okay. People moved on to making indie games where there's actual $, predictably. But, I don't think custom maps will die out forever. There's a lot of fresh blood trying to learn Lua so they can script their own modes into Dota 2's Workshop.
>Want to replay WC3:TFT
>Remember night elf campaign
Seriously why is the night elf campaign in tft such shit
>Seriously why is the night elf campaign in tft such shit
Because it jumps around a fuck ton with a character we didn't know and it didn't do well on building on a larger story.
I liked the silverpine forest part though, where you meet Kael as Tyrande and Malfurion.
Seeing wrecked Lordaeron, like yay we beat the burning legion, and here the zombie apocalypse is still ongoing.
>Arthas continually gets crappier and loses levels until the last mission
>lose kelthuzard very early
>LOTS of dungeon crawling missions, few full fledged missions
The very last mission is fun, but ugh.
>found memories of the orc campaign
>try to replay it
>it feels like a really crappy world of warcraft in an rts
I play warcraft 3 FT online daily. It's very much alive and active. I agree the bots kinda destroys the community but it's easy to get a list of active servers on the various bots and hosting a server with a bot is free and takes 1 minute.
no, that's the /v/ group. if they aren't playing CAPN JACK XDDDDDDDD SO GAY XDDDDDDDDDD they're being "ironic". only a few people from that group are decent, and i don't even think they play anymore.
Battleships. All those weapons/ships, traders, combining weapons, secrets.
A moba had no right to be that good.
And personally i loved the political messages hidden in the game, and the fact you could end the game if everyone wrote -peace.
Melee is still played, I have like 300 games played. Also >>260754007 download fogclick if you do, it's not worth playing games against maphackers and there's a lot of them. Additionally, for being out so long you'd think the only people still playing would be super hardcore, but there are still so many bad people it's unreal, although they probably mostly play 4v4 RT
Magic Defense would've been an even better test then, Anon.
I have never seen a random team that consisted of more than 4 players win at that game.
I have never played WC3 back in the days and I really feel I missed out on so much, now it's too late to start because I'll never be able to develop that nostalgic feeling you get from games you played and enjoyed over a decade ago
This makes me so fucking sad
Since no one else wants to actually link it. We have ~15 active people atm I would say. Usually 6-10 at any given time.
Come stay in the steam group chatroom to actually play.
I warn you that there is tons of shitposting and autism though.
It's also too late because the players aren't there and too many games are empty and hosted by bots these days.
You can go back and play any singleplayer game, but the wc3 custom scene was very different each year.
We just have a few shitposters, as with every /v/ group out there, but unfortunately we're stuck with them due to lack of players. We have plenty of quality players and play good games regularly.
If we can get some more players the shitposters can be removed.
active waiting lobbies on ent bot servers right now
there's 4 times more servers currently running.
and dota 2 has exponentaly more complicated engine than warcraft 3 so it's harder to do stuff
they barely made a damn terrain editor, your precious gui coding can wait until everything else works.
Anyone wanna host something?
I suggest 11th vampire unless someone has a better idea.
There are quests and shit you can do solo so you earn stuff you can use to beat the opposite vampire clan.
I'm from Northrend, but I assume we'd meet on Azeroth, Channel: /v/
if we do this.
That's the group indeed, the shitposter was told to stop or b& though.
We're playing Attack of the BRs at the moment, a map made by two users in the group.
>For those of you who actually played Warcraft III on Battle.net in its prime, was this not the best game of all time? I'm not talking about the campaign (which I did enjoy) or the regular matches, but the custom games that players created.
I dunno if I'd say the best game of all time, I never played the actual game. The custom games were pretty fun though.
A lot of games on bnet are empty when you join them.
Just a host that is refreshing endlessly.
I played a map two weeks ago.
There were better quality maps a few weeks out of RoC launch.
The good maps are out there, but it's harder to get a game going with what you like, so for many the scene is dead.
ENT is conneceted to all realms and garena + eurobattle so it doesn't matter which real you use.
Hosting ENT server yourself is free.
>inb4 ent shill
Just trying to prove that warcraft 3 custom games is NOT dead as many people think it is.
That, is true. However, using one of the popular bots to host a match can make it possible.
I waited 1 hour in a lobby for a full server from WARHAMMER OWC one time. It's hard to get full lobby for not popular maps but it's certainly possible.
>Golden years of WC3 and TFT
>Play almost solely custom maps with good friends for 3-4 years
>First few years of WoW
>Everything felt so good
And now it's all gone
God damn I got good memories from that game. It could get intense as fuck
>tfw someone destroys the blood tester and everybody suspects you just because you were closest to it at the time
>Just trying to prove that warcraft 3 custom games is NOT dead as many people think it is.
Those bots make the scene dead.
Entering games that are shown in the list only to see that they're empty is one of the reasons sc2 custom games were shit.
Jesus fuck why are tft screenshots saved as TGA files?
>plenty of open games 24/7
>playing dbz and TD custom maps all night long
I miss it so much...
>being a total pasty white kid with an asian freind
>learning DOTA all-stars at a lan center
>that asian freind invites me to play with all his asian friends
>never lose a dota match for 2 years
those where good times
Yes, it was a fantastic
toolkit. If only there was a bigger map size limit and the tools weren't shit (fucking jass).
I was a developer working on island troll tribes, and I've got a team working on porting it to dota 2. Expect it.
>tfw you probably played some cool maps with people in this thread back in the day
see you in dota 2 custom maps bros
Reminder that this was the only good AoS/MOBA/ASSFAGGOT ever made.
>tfw I can remember what my first custom game was but I can't remember the map name
>I can see the map and gameplay
>It was a TD and I sucked and got called a noob
This demo is about the old demoscene but it describes perfectly my feelings about wc3
>Reminder that this was the only good AoS/MOBA/ASSFAGGOT ever made.
But it was good.
It put up a good fight vs Dota, but eventually ToB got beaten.
TFT giving further customization was nice.
AoS was crazy before tft with the shit where you turned into a new creature as soon as you reached lvl 10.
>Druid "Level 50"
>I was a developer working on island troll tribes, and I've got a team working on porting it to dota 2. Expect it.
you better not be full of shit
i love your maps and i cant wait for the dota2 port
side question: a game called don't starve shared the same concept of what troll tribes had, what are your thoughts on it?
most of my FFA games back when i played the game we're just playing against my 2 brothers or 3 of my friends
i never had a reason to play online
my old bnet was mostly for diablo 2
>hammer editor is literally the easiest and most powerful editor around
>it's too hard
i bet that major in being wrong is helping you to be right about things you know nothing about and have retarded opinions on.
I'm probably gonna try to play something.
I don't have shit up so I can host anything myself sadly.
Orc Arena thing
Resident Evil thing
Which were your favorite heroes? Mine was Cryptlord and Goblin Tinker tied with Dark Ranger as runner up.
>tfw they will never have a rematch
Goodnight sweet prince
>but eventually ToB got beaten
It was the most played for a long time. But the lack of updates and the lack of 100 copy-pasted heroes sent the ADHD kiddies away from quality to quantity.
>tfw WC4 is made
>tfw the world editor is based on the SC2 editor
I don't know if Troll Tribes was the first though, I remember very early survival games (one where you're a human in a snowy world) and you have to pick up various things and craft survival items. It even had a cold system where you freeze if you aren't near a fire for long enough.
Ah I guess that makes it fairly limited on the types of maps it can be used for.
I think this was even back in RoC, but I was blown away by how large a map was.
It was an alternate melee map, but every standard race was split into three based on the heroes.
So there was 1 Night Elf team with Keeper of the Grove and it had Dryads, Centaurs, etc.
Think it was 3vs3vs3vs3
He was the first guy to program the hack, but i was the one that found the exploit (not intentionally though). That guy even made a video of all the progamers getting mad when they got disced.
>all the feels of wc3
no need to be such stuck up cunts. chances are you're shitters yourselves since the worst people tend to be the most vocal.
the group is just your average /v/ group, with some good players and some retarded faggots. we play every day and have some good hosts and quality players. we even pruned off some shitposters today.
you guys better have some classic stuff ready, I'm downloading the client as we speak
i didnt expect people to get this much progress yet
custom models already?
>that fight over who can be green (Legolas)
Every lotr map ever
It was one of the most played in the first couple years of TFT. It never got much exposure, though. The US/Euro modding community loved it especially in the later years because it had the best coders and artists working on it. It inspired other MOBAs such as AotZ. It's also in Blizzard's Hall of Fame for WC3 custom games.
Motherfuckin' Uther party.
Anyone remember that map where one guy would turn into a werewolf or vampire when the sun went down?
>people fighting over legoass
>be based gimli everytime mfw
>Tides of Blood
>Age of Myth
>Desert of Exile
>Aeon of Zenith
I agree its a fucking shame Dota ended upshading EVERYthing. Would be more fun to play some of the maps.
There was also a vampire game not vampirism, the one where you have to kill the peasants at night and hide in the "blight" marked hideout areas during the day. Purple was the one human player trying to stop them.
The Archimonde hero was OP, can't remember why though.
It's pretty crazy when you think about it how many amazing maps came out of the W3 custom scene.
Dota is just the most popular, but there's basically a ton of them that could become successful stand alone games on their own. I'm surprised it hasn't happened except for Dota.
i said it was progress
not a fucking milestone
>It was one of the most played in the first couple years of TFT
dota has been around since RoC
ToB probably got overshadowed when dota's popularity snowballed
>scroll down the thread
>no mentions of the SotDRPG
Literally the greatest masterpiece, regardless of tiny bugs.
there's quite a few games that could be easily confused for them. magicka is quite similar to spellcraft, though it doesn't have nearly as many options as spellcraft. the red solstice is basically the night of the dead maps. i know there's a game out there that is basically parasite.
>that one DBZ RPG game
>that one other RPG where you could write down character codes and resume playing later
>tfw 56k internet lying about having cable so people will join
>you'll never feel any of these feels again
>dota has been around since RoC
DotA was dead in the first few years of TFT because there were like 10 separate developers making their own versions of DotA because Eul quit making it. DotA Allstars was the version that eventually got popular, and that's what you have today.
there were a few that used medivh warlocks was a pvp one where you bought spells and tried to knock each other into lava, spellcraft had random shit drop on the ground that you picked up to combine and make spells.
I used to go get the terrorist jobs in the rigged ones then troll the fuck out of people.
Rigged ones were so bad I could basically kill Mafia in 10 minutes because they never bothered to get katanas in the way gate.
>DotA was dead in the first few years of TFT because there were like 10 separate developers making their own versions
doesnt that mean that everyone is just starting to jump into the dota bandwagon hence why people are making a shitton of dota clones?
this was the start of it
they found the concept interesting so they had their own special versions of it
from what i can recall
eul was still with them, when all-stars came out
and some chink helped them make allstars
>Actually playing a game of Rabbits vs Sheep
>eul was still with them, when all-stars came out
Nope. Stolen content. And keeping with that Guinsoo/Icefrog continued to steal content and code from other maps (including ToB) during its development on WC3. Eul didn't give his blessing for Allstars until he got a "job" with Valve.
Skin and mount skin variations are free, and its only an option to unlock a hero with real money you shit lord. Only a baddie casual who can't do dailies every 3 days think the heroes are expensive with gold.
Well the whole thing with Eul is basically hinted in the history of DotA on Wikipedia. To find more of the specifics on the theft throughout its development you'd have to go into the archives of WC3 modding forums. I do remember specific instances of people finding identical code from some maps later being found in DotA (same variables and all). It shouldn't be surprising that the creators of DotA Allstars stole code, as the coding that they did was incredibly poor. I remember in an update following a flamewar between one of the creators of ToB and Guinsoo two abilities were added to Allstars which were identical to abilities in ToB.
Nice, I ran a few clans in my day too, it came with the turf of being a dev.
I mean data size. That 4MB limit was worse than the webm size limitation. Especially with all those custom models.
Great! Hope you see you play anon, feel free to subscribe to our map it's up on the workshop but it's not playable yet.
>side question: a game called don't starve shared the same concept of what troll tribes had, what are your thoughts on it?
I was a little pissed when I first played minecraft because it was the same thing with no pvp.
Don't starve was pretty much the same thing too, except also with no pvp. I even considered making an ITT mod for minecraft, but nobody was i
