The devs have been so good with the critisism. They are aware of what he covered and appreciate his views. They've been talkin to us about this in the oddworld forums and the fact that they are listening to what's being said makes me happy.

The guy is right, but we can learn from everything he's shown.

I really enjoyed new n tasty as it was a new game and the possible rebirth of oddworld, and I've been a fan since it's begining. It's worth a play through as it is fun and pretty. I love the original more so but I still love this new one too. Plus ther effort and hard work is evident. I don't know any other dev team that's as nice and open as they are.

The New N Tasty video is a comparison between Abe's Oddessy and the changes made for New N Tasy. He's not a buyer's guide critic. He only reviews a game or two a month and often not the big releases, but he goes way in depth. I never planned to buy NnT ever because I could tell by the trailers that it would be shit - I watched the video to get a better understanding of game design in general by listening to one person's very detailed, painstaking criticism. Because prerendered stuff heavily limits interactivity. Take the old resident evil games for instance. Anything that needed to be interactable needed to be modeled because you can't interact with a 2D background. In pseudo-3D games with prerendered backgrounds the camera also needs to be fixed (though you might be able to subvert this with fancy tricks) in order to sustain the illusion. Another thing is that prerendered things don't scale well. You can't just run a game with 2D backgrounds that were designed to be run at 480p or less at 1080p or higher without ruining the background quality. 3D games typically don't have any of these issues.

Really, Oddworld is the same game as Prince of Persia, with a few tweaks here and there. There have also been others like it, with aesthetics ranging from a textureless fantasy landscape (Another World) to a grimdark shooter. Hell, there's even been a HD remake of Prince of Persia.

When you review one of these games, you should be comparing it to EVERY OTHER GAME that exists within the genre. So saying that oddworld HD sucks because it isn't as grimy, is like saying that GRIMINESS IS BETTER for the games aesthetics, and that Another World and HD PoP are ALSO shit because of their beautiful environments.

Mathew goes into a lot of detail, but he really doesn't play that many games, nor is as knowledgeable about them as he may seem to other plebs who also don't play that many games. I mean he didn't even mention any of these games in his review, and a review never tries to solely compare one game with another. That's lazyness coming from people who have only played those two games and therefore cannot find a place for them in the heirarchy of the genre (which is what writing reviews is all about).
