Today is Earthbound's (mother 2) 20th birthday. With all this vivian and zoe quinn shenanigans, lets have a thread celebrating 20 years of earthbound goodness, and one of the best jrpgs ever.
Lets post stories and fun memories with the game
>1997 and seven years old
>find this gem at blockbuster
>rent it and play it for hours on end
>friend comes over to watch me play
>we discover that if you plug in a second controller, 2p can control battle commands too
>I decide to be Ness and Poo, he is Paula and Jeff
>we play the game nonstop, I even buy the strategy guide from wallmart
>to this day that guide is my favorite guide for a game ever
>I eventually buy the game used, and we continue to play it, and keep playing it years later
>fast forward to 2014, all i want is nintendo to release earthbound for a 3ds virtual console
>nintendo won't even do anything to celebrate 20 years of earthbound
>fuck it, can't stop me from playing it again and having a good ol time
Anyone have the comic with Ness calling his dad?
A quick google search can get you that info anon.
Some of the worst marketing ever, but i loved those scratch and sniff cards
My text tone is the level up tune
When the mother series turned 25 we had threads left and right, but now that this zoe bullshit and vivian lovefest is in full gear no one gives a shit about this stuff it seems.
It's like they want to force shitty sales, that or they know the following is so dedicated we will eat up anything they throw at us
You are actually really close to one of the coolest dungeons in the game
>mfw wrpg fags will never ever get a masterpiece like earthbound
so.. enjoying your shitty fpses that are wrongly called rpg?
Jrpgs definitly arent for everyone, and if it isn't your cup of tea I can't fault you. But I love that I can see the enemies I am going to encounter, and its not all random. Gives me some degree of control over when and what I fight
Are there any other games that start out relatively nice and turn darker towards the end?
My only guess would be pic related.
oh it pulls things that way?
god it took final fantasy fucking 20 years to figure that shit out and it's still fucking unbearable
nice to know that they maybe toned down some of the most tedious part of the genre
>Perfectly fine thread
>Some bitter asshole comes in and starts smearing his shit all over his face
I was going to get this on the eShop but fuck them for making it more expensive. I've already finished it but it would be a nice game to play in bed with the Wii U controller.
So what are your thoughts on Sakurai fucking it up?
pic related is to blame
Why can't someone enjoy both. Two of my favorite rpgs of all time are Earthbound and Morrowind.
Pic related and Earthbound are one of my favorite SNES games
Isn't it like $12 or some shit on the e-shop?
>Shitposters on /v/
Protip: If you want actual video game discussion, try night time /v/
Not to be an elitist pc jerk, but it really is best on PC. Some of the mods for it are amazing. My personal favorite was one that injected Aliens and Predators into the game. Let you play as a predator and hunt aliens, as well as do regular quests. Even had downed ships, Alien hives, and all sorts of cool weapons.
Though nowadays I get that it's hard for people to get into it due to its dated graphics and bizzare combat
A lot of people give morrowind shit because of
>Miss miss miss, WORDS WORDS WORDS, WALKING SIMULATOR
but for what it did, I still think it holds up today. Shit's immersive as fuck, even vanilla. Reading into the lore is always interesting and the quest lines are arguably good. Not to mention the side quests and how open the world is.
Not preparing, and not sticking with main skills
are the main reasons people don't "like" older rpgs. It all boils down to
wait which bit is cancerous here?
I was stating that I'm glad that earthbound doesn't have the cancerous shit that other shitty jrpgs do, at least not to the same degree
it's unbelievable that people are mindless and dull enough to actually enjoy games with filler random battle bullshit, where every fight is the exact same thing, dealt with in the exact same way, without any skill involved
you're not being elitist at all, the xbox port was horribly horribly botched and had a really bad history of problems during the updates that were supposed to fix it
that said I still hate all RPGs by whatever the fuck company makes Elder Scrolls
Funnily enough there's this one really old Korean RPG called Seal that played a lot like Earthbound with the whole seeing your party thing.
Although it's like FFVI in terms of combat
i'd celebrate by listening to its OST but hey i've already scrobbled it like 6000 times in the last month anyway
Yes, but you can't approach it like the typical game. It's got repetitive moments, and requires some imagination to fully enjoy, but it's one of the comfiest and realest games there is.
>no skill involved
how can you say that when you actually never finished a JRPG game?
and sorry mate.. but the first RPG games were like that, until your retarded FPS and click games came and we had to start calling them JRPG to make a difference.
>le ebin spam attack to win xDD!!111
just play earthbound.. you will have a good time.
>le ebin spam attack to win xDD!!111
Do you not realize how stupid this makes you look? Acting like a complete asshole doesn't make people want to take your suggestions on board.
I usually replay it once every 2 years or so, I just love its world and exploring the nooks and crannies. Plus the quests are actually interesting.
Ost is easily one of my favorites for any game ever. What's your favorite song? I have lots, but i always loved the song that plays during the opening demo
I've finished plenty of JRPGs, when did I ever suggest I hadn't?
you're making a lot of assumptions, jesus christ you are autismal as fuck about this
literally all you know about me so far is that I think Mother and every FF game is shit because the gameplay is shallow
I will play Earthbound but holy fuck dude, in the future if you're going to attempt to argue with a person, at least fucking learn to read what they wrote
I never beat it because I lost my save file
I liked JRPGs.
And I thought Earthbound is pretty shit.
No strategy to the fights.
Story was about as deep as a pokemon game.
>hurruhuhru expecting a story on the snes
Music was decent.
Everything else was "eh". I'd rather play breath of fire.
How bout a song inspired by and using sounds from earthbound?
This song is my fucking jam.
I get chills every time you transition to Winters for the first time in Earthbound, because this fucking track starts playing when you take control of jeff. Oh god. It's so good.
Fights got a bit more involved later in the game for sure, the real charm of the game was the asthetic though. Most jrpgs were ripoffs of the standard dragon warrior esque motif.
I love the whole series, but I honestly think the first Mother was the one that had me hooked the most. It didn't have a vast soundtrack like 2 or 3, and the gameplay was primitive, but I think it had the best characters and the few tunes it had are some of the most memorable in video game history. I sincerely hope they remake Mother 1 some day.
despite hating that fucking game I gotta agree it had a lot of style for a game from 89 and those tunes are pretty jamful
I actually had them on my computer before I played the game
Eh, it was pretty much "what would an RPG in the city/town look like". Not much else is going on, just swapped names and shit. I guess it was strange in its own way, but that didn't go too far. At least an extra layer of something to consider in combat would have gone a long way. As it is, it aged terribly.
Did anyone else have real trouble getting into Mother 3? I loved mother 1 and 2, and anxiously waited and was inevitably crushed with earthbound 64 was cancelled. When I finally got to play mother 3...I dunno, I just ended up wanting to play earthbound again.
Mother 3 is a lot different than Earthbound so don't feel too bad
They got this part wrong and that's why it's shit and bad and you're basically Hitler for liking it.
earthbound spans many genres, brother
what does 'earthbound' sound like to you
to most people it is boring chorused organ sustaining a chord for 5 hours, or some idiosyncratic bullshit involving a drum machine and synth noises
So is this series one of those "must play this it's so damn amazing/wtf is wrong with you because you haven't played it" series?
Haven't played it yet and was thinking about getting the ROMs
about how long will they all take to finish too?
Ive got a huge collection that im slowly going through. I can post a mega upload if you like
The entire Earthbound fanbase treats it like some godly game but just know this thread is 100% dribbling fanboys who ignore the many flaws of this game
Play it if you must, but you, like many others before you will realize it's a shit game
This thread is like 5 guys posting amongst themselves, I'm totally not exaggerating
Such a simple tune, but it's beautiful, like so many things in this game. Looks like I'm going to be replaying some Earthbound here soon.
Still have my fingers crossed that we'll see Lucas for smash.
I wish Paula could get in the game too.
I am one hundred percent serious don't play Mother
somewhat stylistically neat but every time you get a new member on your team they are at the lowest level possible and they will immediately die everywhere you go unless you fucking grind and grind and grind
read a walkthrough of it
boom it has pictures so you basically see everything
I don't know why people ever play JRPGs when you accomplish the same thing by reading someone's playthru while listening to the music in like 1/10th the time
also take note that even the people who like the game agree that it's primitive and mainly enjoyable for the artistic style or whatever
I'm totally not hitler in disguise, if that's what you're trying to say. It's not like nazi science has given me immortality and i am secretly pulling the strings of world politics.
If you like classic jrpgs you will like earthbound. It's that simple
I would but theyre almost all in a 30gb unsorted folder so...
The hell are you talking about?
For one you can find Earthbound on the eshop if you are legitimately retarded about roms
For Mother 1 just look up Earthbound Zero
For Mother 3 just find you a rom and apply this patch:
don't be a dumb
so the things that aren't related to the fact that it's a game?
come on man
>if you like dicks in your ass you will like more dicks in your ass
I dunno man most people get tired of things eventually you know?
Currently uploading a file to MEGA for yall to enjoy
>if you like dicks, you like dicks
I'm not to sure what point you are trying to make there. I mean, if you like a certain type of game, you are gonna go out and play other games like it. It's that simple.
Actually there are flaws in everything. I guess the flaws in Earthbound just didn't stick out to the people who enjoyed it.
Well, actually that's kind of obvious. But really though we all have our own tastes and it's cool that you don't like it. It'd be nice if you could just leave us to our thread and maybe you can make a thread about a game you like better.. but really I guess if you wanna stick around then that's cool too. No one's telling you what to do.
Awesome! I hope you like it lots. Just sit back, enjoy all the little things the game does and have fun.
I have to agree with this Anon. But for me it wasn't so much the story as it was the atmosphere, gameplay, visuals and music. I mean I really liked the story but dang those other things just took the cake.
I like Ness and the Onett stage in SSB but I have to tell you the game is bad. Fair enough if you want to see for yourself though
No they don't. The gameplay was atrocious. As much as I liked the weirdness of the game for the first few hours, the gameplay made me turn it off and never play it again. Well I turned off the emulator, it never released in my territory
This statement is wrong, not just for this game but the statement that somehow liking a classic RPG means you will like them all
Do you have any to share? I'd love to see some of the stuff you like.
so how old are you guys who have never played earthbound?
the first time i played the game was 11 years ago before i was even a teen, because the internet had hyped it up everywhere, it'was impossible not to pique interest
how long has it been since you guys figured out emulators existed?
yeah you might get into an argument where you have to actually make an intelligent point and that would be hard
let's instead all keep jizzing ourselves over a game without actually talking about it, we'll totally gain more as people by doing that
But if you like a jrpg, then you are predisposed to enjoy other jrpgs. Especially one that is an arguably decent jrpg such as earthbound.
That's a very nice painting. I loved Mother 1 with it's atmosphere and everything. Well, to be honest here, I didn't like it at first but once I got into it a little more everything just sort of came together and it became a masterpiece. The atmosphere was quite a bit different but still really similar to Earthbound. It was almost like Earthbound but without too much of the quirkiness and weird things going around, but in place of that it just sort of felt more "grand", if that makes sense.
>Beat Earthbound for the first time a few weeks back
>for years have been inundated with spoilers of the giygas fight at the end, including Paula
praying into the void
>I still fucking tear up
The battle system and item management was a chore, but I don't regret playing through at least once.
>my ideal life
>everyone likes what I like and I don't have to think
>I saw jimmy today I told jimmy I liked pokémon he said he liked it too, then we didn't have anything to talk about so we just played pokémon some more
>nothing is ever a challenge for me it's so great that everything is so neat and perfect
>a game which has zero tactical strategy, just attack and heal
Final Fantasy is several times more complex than Earthbound and it came out years earlier. EB was way behind the times at its release
There were, at the time of EB several JRPG series which were only anything alike due to using a turn based structure
You are wrong and dumb, fuck this fanbase
Here guys, if yall have any interest i have a half gig of fan art and what not.
If the link doesnt work just yell at me
You sound like someone who only played the game up until threed and just stopped. If you had played any further you would have seen how in depth the combat could get, with different shields, combat items, and dealing with large groups of enemies. Not claiming its combat was revolutionary, but it did a lot of things well.
Why is the Lost Underworld so comfy? I love those little sprites.
No it wouldn't be, at all
Thankfully it still isn't really relevant, I have no idea why Sakurai added Lucas and another EB stage to Brawl. It's an unpopular series for a reason
>liking the game that inspired Homestuck
Posting some Mother related albums for everyone to enjoy if they haven't listened to them yet. I know there are people arguing in this thread lots, but I'm just trying to ignore them and post things that I really like about the games.

Thanks Anon! But the link seems kind of, uh, special. Can you fix it for us? I'm sure to download it once you do.
Soundtrack, atmosphere, writing is 10/10. Gameplay is typical Dragon Age but advantage of seeing enemies.
It's one of my favorite games, despite the actual gameplay being a bit lackluster.
Definitly gonna save and listen to these.
Sorry about that, site gave me some trouble so i am gonna need to reupload. Should only be a few min
Who gives a shit if Earthbound inspired it. Fuck off, and don't ever mention Homestuck in any Mother thread ever again. Please.
You fight stronger enemies as you progress.
You'll eventually fight gang members, zombies, bears, crocodiles. And then you will progress into fighting aliens, mother fucking dinasaurs and other weird shit.
last one because holy shit am i tired of looking
fuck off back to tumblr, and take your shitty webcomic with you
Mother 1? Yeah it can be a little stale at first but really once the atmosphere kicks in and you get that comfy feeling that really makes the game what it is. At least for me, I really loved the atmosphere of it all.
Oh, if you want actual download links, here.
For the Mother 1 Vocal album you might have to download each of the tracks individually, but there aren't that many so it shouldn't be too hard. Here's the link.
The "Earthbound" album should have the download links right on the page I linked to earlier, so yeah. Anyways, enjoy!
I first played Earthbound/Mother 2 in 1997 when I was 11 because my cousin gave me her SNES and a copy of the game plus the guide. It was the first RPG I ever played and it completely changed how I saw video games. I realized then video games could be art.
That doesn't excuse the current trend of overly cinematic games with no substance as far as gameplay goes.
sorry i'm not as autistic as you
>tfw my hometown is basically like onett and hasn't changed that much in 20 years
no box stores showed up, no shitty night clubs. aside from alot of illegals moving in feels fucking good man
Not really. Maybe in the early game (and by that I mean maybe the first 15 minutes).
But the way your HP bar slides when you get hit will become really important as you get more HP, because it means you can keep fighting even if you got a deadly blow, or you can have enough time to heal.
And there's also the PP (magic) management; I recommend you to actually use the healing items so that you can use the PP to damage your foes to kill them before they get a chance to hit you.
I was only disappointed that it was a lot more linear than Earthbound and had a lot less funny dialog. Still like it more than Earthbound though because of the rhythm fight system and the feels. I have to say though that I played it straight after Mother 2 without any hype/waiting in between.
Sweet, I still don't quite understand the battle mechanics. I mean I know its TBS but I can't ever understand boss patterns for defending against attacks like in Etrian Odyssey.

>Play Mother games, Euro Truck Sim 2, and a few different other games
>As I play, I get this overwhelming feeling of calm, almost as if everything is going to be alright for the rest of time, almost in a sleep-like state
>Even after I stop playing the game it takes a while for this fantastic feeling to go away
What is this thing I'm feeling
Thank you so much! I'm gonna be listening to this all night.
Also, here is that link to my collection of Mother pics
Im playing mother 3 on an emulator...and from what I understand the emulation lag makes it very difficult to master the rythm combat. Do you suffer from the same problem? or were you able to find a work around?
PSP has minor input lag. I played it on the emulator and on a ROMcart on the GBA and the ROMcart's combat worked perfectly while I'd lose combos constantly on the PSP version.
God all the stupid Beatles samples in that last link are fucking irritating. It's like he just found their discography. I hate this so much.
Why not, I enjoy it. You might, you might not. Weed sometimes makes me feel like a kid again, and Earthbound is the embodiment of that feeling. Kinda goes hand in hand for me.
Thank you Anon! This is a real help for my Earthbound folder!
Aw yeah. I love this feeling. I get it a lot, especially since I just relax all of the time. Playing Earthbound is comparable to meditating while in a very nice place, and I love it a lot.
This is the closest Earthbound could be to an album. Wacky, psychedelic pastiches of american pop culture and ironic self awareness.
>laughing shareholders in the devil's machine.gif
Anon, I hope you're still here because:
The same thing happened to me.
But hey, look right here:
Some other anon in an Earthbound thread showed me that. Best day of the year. :)
When I first listened to Smile bootlegs in 2010, my first thought was how much everything sounded like Earthbound, and I thought I was crazy for thinking that
but those saves arent me.
how I mused my items, how my characters leveled up.
DYING LIKE 20 TIMES IN THAT FUCKING MOLE LEVEL JUST TO WALK BACK TO IT FROM THE CITY.
its just not the same.
But ill look at it anyway. thanks anon
>those saves arent me
Every game is played differently
They are our own personal journey through a world someone else made
The experiences we had will always be with us forever
Wow thanks for making me tear up faglord
Thank you my friends!
I am definitely going to check those out.
Hey anon, let me ask you a question.
Do you know the name of this song? It goes something like ___terday.
I don't give a shit about Earthbound/mother at all.
Here's my beef, all these "indie developers" exist, but why can't any of them make a decent jrpg style game?
Why do people think that platformers are fun? They're not, they're just easier to shit out than a decent genre.
fangame Eagleland going?
>tfw South America is not on the map
I'm not sure if this one is really from Earthbound or not. The font is similar and it's definitely got the motif, but I can't recall seeing it ingame. It has been a while since I've played though.
I'm trying to understand this comment, but the more I look at it, the less sense it makes.
I like to take title screens of games that I like and make them into wallpapers. Works really well for Earthbound and other 16-bits.
>no monkey islands
>no kangaroo land
>caliFAGnia blocked by mountains
>somebody played the game this far just for this screenshot
This is so ironic it's not even funny.
i have these with transparent backgrounds if anyone wants 'em.
For the most part bosses don't really have a pattern, they just have a moveset and they'll use whatever they feel like using. The Frankling bot is one of the exceptions.
In the future, you'll guard when a character is low on health and you want to get them healed ASAP. Make sure you know your character's speed, as well, to know who can heal the quickest.
Nigger, the place you fight him looks like a woman's womb, and there is absolutely no reason for his normal circular form to shift in such a way to make this fetus shape. They did it on purpose
Dose any one remember Onett times?
The original Post is still up but your not allowed to comment on it anymore.
why the fuck does it not let me just eat the fucking cookie i'm hungry now and I don't want to give up my Hamburger or Croissant for a pissant cookie but I'd like the extra few HP for fuck's sake holy shit I'm mad
>Implying the combat doesn't get more intense
-The order of killing foes can matter because some may blow up on you when you murder them.
The tree itself is a fine 1st example of the game showing you some shit, by far the strongest foe there, able to wreak your shit in if given a chance, blows up on your face when killed. You have to murder shit around it 1st because if you don't you die from the blast most of the time. Foes around it could be doing shit like stealing PP, giving a status affect, and more. Now the tree being open to paralysis might be nice an all, but you might not have that when you 1st fight it.
Later on some foes take the whole blow up on you thing and go medic for the enemy team. By now you are a lot stronger yes, but you still might not want a bomb in your face. Still if you don't kill this thing fast enough you'll have to deal with a prolonged fight.
-Several foes can come into fights with auto shields on
It isn't so bad at 1st when they only have a shield of light, sure it is annoying but whatever. You can power through them. But then they can do some real horrible shit later.
A "black mage" type foe casting non stop fire on you and shit has a psychic power shield on, it also blows up on you when you beat it.
Really there is a lot more but meh.
Man, how come Ninten didn't get a cat? Fucking kid is a small weak child. The only party members that aren't weak overall in some way are Pippi and Teddy, and Pippi is just using Teddy's stats.
I'd love a cat that could take care of his asthma issues.
You know, having played Earthbound over and over the combat has become second nature and I don't think much about it. You're right though - there's some enemies that can seriously wreck your shit if you just sit there and jab A.
So I fucked a cosplayer dressed as Paula once. It was kind of surreal to both of us. Otherwise enjoyable copulation was made real by the fact that one of us was dressed up from Earthbound. Moral of the story don't sexualize Mother.
The funny thing is, I've done a solo game with every character (read, use cheats and such to remove party, switch them out when needed)
I made it a goal not to level too much mind you but:
-diamond band is best arm band, sorry but full brian shock protection is so much better than a 10-30 extra defense.
-super bombs are awesome
-brain food lunch with salt is awesome
-Ness is still overall the easiest, but man Poo and him switch places a lot, no wonder they give him late. Some areas are harder for him by himself mind you, and shit like homesick can be a game over, but still. The fact that he can use some auto heal points others can't is nice as well (the game is programed to respond to him). Also he is the only one who's encounter system isn't messed up of course so you don't have to rethink about how you get into battles like you do with Paula, Jeff, and Poo (who are all different in this area, each of them actually). He has the easist end game overall of course. And man you really learn to love salt with brain food lunch with him by end game, it almost feels like it is cheating. Paraylsis is still a 1hko on so many and you learn to love it more.
-Poo, he can teleport out of Thread and nothing happens bad game wise, in fact you got to love teleport. Shields are a big help. Life up and not having to pack salt with brain food lunch is a huge help. Overall his game is quick, guy is awesome. Poo does have to juggle his equipment though, Bracer of King's removal of brainshock guard seems like a no brainer to not equip it, but that extra luck is very useful. Taking off the cloak of kings for an earth pendant gives full flash, fire, and freeze guard, but you lose 40 defense and 40 speed of course. Freeze lets him one shot a lot of horrible monsters as well that Ness would have loved to smash up. The sword of kings of course lets you do physical attacks with the guy some w/o having to rely on bombs/power shield (oh my god, that shield is a life saver for him).
I'm playing through EarthBound on the Wii U VC after I beat MOTHER about a month ago (the MOTHER 1+2 fan translation by Tomato), and I'm not sure what to say. I'm only in Twoson, but I don't know whether I like it more than MOTHER.
I mean, there's something I like about the simplicity of the first game. Enemies sometimes drop items, I can encounter enemies just by running back and forth, making grinding easier, and it's fairly easy to read all the dialogue in the game. But in EarthBound, there's just so much dialogue that I'm afraid of missing. There are a ton of items, some of which only have like a 1/100 chance of dropping from the enemy, and it just feels like there's so much to miss if I do something the wrong way.
I talked to this guy in Burglin Park who wanted to buy a For Sale Sign from me, but I didn't own one yet, so I bought it from the other guy, but when I tried talking to the first guy again, the option wouldn't come up to sell it to him anymore. Just what the heck did I miss?
-Paula, you aren't beating mondo mole at 1st like Ness and Poo can (by para and by power shield), not for a while. trillionage sprout will be very luck based to beat but can happen though. Paula is fast, that will always save you. Paula has to be careful with items more than Ness and Poo though. For starters while she can restore her health still at least, Pray is wild, and not very useful except in battles that won't kill you (few and far between, 1/16 to 1/8 most of the time for hp restore isn't good), but it can come in handy if it doesn't want to kill you as well. Freeze 1 shots so many evil foes for her though. But man by end game you got to juggle some bombs and healing items around. However by end game as well you can laugh at foes like starman, who won't kill you because of a psychic shield but will certainly more than murder themselves. Oh and the magic fry pan if you can get it is awesome, makes her hp last longer than Jeff, lets her sometimes hit hard w/o having to use a bomb, and also leaves her standing with 1 hp a lot for the auto back up. The longer fights take with her is very bad, and if you run out of items you may have to retreat.
I remember this one fag complaining about Earthbound's music, and he even said some shit like "I mean take a track like Summers for example, who would actually choose it and say yes when asked what's a great video game track"
What a fucking plebe
Haven't posted any of them, for one I didn't have anything to post with.
-Jeff, all will be hell until he can get his heavy bazooka, which makes item management so much easier (read he doesn't have to worry about running out as fast). Jeff overall is the hardest IMO. If you aren't trying to level up that much you'll have to be at level 50 or so before he can use it though. Jeff's hp sucker won't work if he is dropping to 0 hp, and while Jeff may have more HP than Paula his does drain faster (guts and that, plus again limited restore items). As an added kick Jeff doesn't even get an offense restore with magic butterflies (that 20 pp per time + spawn areas with them is pretty useful). Jeff's speed is very important as well. And since his speed is linked to bottle rockets working, which is linked to being able to protect yourself vs things like Flash, that can be hard. Jeff is like Paula in that he isn't beating mondo mole, but also will not win easily vs. even shit like the titantic ant. Really you may want to grind for a couple of bombs just to get out of Onett, that is how bad it can be. Your 1 big bottle rocket, yeah make it count man. Trillionage sprout isn't being done by him as well. The good thing with Jeff is, at least you only have to pack a few multi-bottle rockets to murder bosses in the end, but the trip there will be hell. Also I should point out that using teleport unless needed by story reasons for Jeff and Paula (read to get to winters when you have to go to Stonehenge base) was cheating in my book. Which really was bad when the world stopped linking together after Fourside. Had to use Escargo Express as well which really felt like cheating because you have to use Ness to get it but man, you can't throw away some things like fucking packs of bubble gum man. To be fair, I didn't use them in the lost underworld man.
So yeah, Jeff and Paula, a lot of extra planning was done to make sure they would win item wise.
I also want to say that I'm getting the impression that EarthBound is the most lighthearted game in the series. MOTHER feels more "realistic" than EarthBound, even if there was a bunch of weird stuff like Devil Cars or walking nooses. It had a bit of an ominous feeling at times, but overall it felt like an adventure to uncover the truth. EarthBound gives off this really surreal vibe, especially evident in some of the character designs (like Porky's mom) and dialogue.
From the 5 minutes I've had MOTHER 3 on, it feels a bit more grim in tone. Like, I don't know how to describe it, but it doesn't have that inherent surreal cheeriness that's present when I was playing EarthBound. It feels like it's more of a fictional world than a parody depiction of an existing place, and I think I kinda like that, it makes it feel a bit more natural than EarthBound.
Also, what does everyone prefer to call the series? I usually call it the MOTHER series, because at least it's more accurate than calling it the "EarthBound" series.
When I refer to MOTHER's localization that was never officially released, I say Earth Bound (with the space, which was the technical name). When I refer to the localized sequel to MOTHER, I say EarthBound, but when referring to the Japanese version, I say MOTHER 2. I always say MOTHER 3, never EarthBound 2 or something stupid like that. I also never say "EarthBound Zero". It's not like I'm going to call the first Fire Emblem game on the Famicom "Fire Emblem Negative Six".
Well here's gif to celebrate.
