Today is Earthbound's (mother 2) 20th birthday. With all this vivian and zoe quinn shenanigans, lets have a thread celebrating 20 years of earthbound goodness, and one of the best jrpgs ever.
What year did the original MOTHER come out?
Jeff is my second favorite non PSI user party member.
>Earthbound
>good

My phone ringtone is Otherworldly Foe.
Lets post stories and fun memories with the game
>1997 and seven years old
>find this gem at blockbuster
>rent it and play it for hours on end
>friend comes over to watch me play
>we discover that if you plug in a second controller, 2p can control battle commands too
>I decide to be Ness and Poo, he is Paula and Jeff
>we play the game nonstop, I even buy the strategy guide from wallmart
>to this day that guide is my favorite guide for a game ever
>I eventually buy the game used, and we continue to play it, and keep playing it years later
>fast forward to 2014, all i want is nintendo to release earthbound for a 3ds virtual console
>nintendo won't even do anything to celebrate 20 years of earthbound
>fuck it, can't stop me from playing it again and having a good ol time

Its shit
When the mother series turned 25 we had threads left and right, but now that this zoe bullshit and vivian lovefest is in full gear no one gives a shit about this stuff it seems.
>>260202393
Ebin
Here, enjoy some fan art I will dump
It's the little things games do that always impress me
>Earthbound costs more than every other SNES game on the eShop
I guess it's because even the digital copies are ***ULTRA RARE BUY QUICK***
I love me some art of the crew
I need to finish this game. I got to the part where I arrived in some swamp and then I just stopped playing.
>>260203113
It's like they want to force shitty sales, that or they know the following is so dedicated we will eat up anything they throw at us
I aint played Earthbound, but I will still give it a try despite the first game sucking ass and it being a JRPG and therefore inherently shitty
>>260203401
You are actually really close to one of the coolest dungeons in the gamedinosaurs
>mfw wrpg fags will never ever get a masterpiece like earthbound
so.. enjoying your shitty fpses that are wrongly called rpg?
>>260203635
Jrpgs definitly arent for everyone, and if it isn't your cup of tea I can't fault you. But I love that I can see the enemies I am going to encounter, and its not all random. Gives me some degree of control over when and what I fight
>>260203745
There's way better JRPGs than Earthbound, man.
Are there any other games that start out relatively nice and turn darker towards the end?
My only guess would be pic related.
>>260203726
Good ol summers
>>260203905
oh it pulls things that way?
god it took final fantasy fucking 20 years to figure that shit out and it's still fucking unbearable
nice to know that they maybe toned down some of the most tedious part of the genre
>>260203745
>Perfectly fine thread
>Some bitter asshole comes in and starts smearing his shit all over his face
Every time.
>>260203113
I was going to get this on the eShop but fuck them for making it more expensive. I've already finished it but it would be a nice game to play in bed with the Wii U controller.
So what are your thoughts on Sakurai fucking it up?
>pic related is to blame
>>260203745
Why can't someone enjoy both. Two of my favorite rpgs of all time are Earthbound and Morrowind.
>>260204146
oh god I played morrowind on the xbox

>>260204292
Not to be an elitist pc jerk, but it really is best on PC. Some of the mods for it are amazing. My personal favorite was one that injected Aliens and Predators into the game. Let you play as a predator and hunt aliens, as well as do regular quests. Even had downed ships, Alien hives, and all sorts of cool weapons.
Though nowadays I get that it's hard for people to get into it due to its dated graphics and bizzare combat
>Can see your party following you
>There's sprites for when you move at a diagonal
>Can see enemies outside of the fight screen
10/10 game
>>260204090
Lucas/Claus will be Ness' costume alts
>Earthbound is now 19 years old
Hold me, /v/
>>260204146
A lot of people give morrowind shit because of
>Miss miss miss, WORDS WORDS WORDS, WALKING SIMULATOR
but for what it did, I still think it holds up today. Shit's immersive as fuck, even vanilla. Reading into the lore is always interesting and the quest lines are arguably good. Not to mention the side quests and how open the world is.
Not preparing, and not sticking with main skills
are the main reasons people don't "like" older rpgs. It all boils down toreading comprehension
>>260204457
wait which bit is cancerous here?
I was stating that I'm glad that earthbound doesn't have the cancerous shit that other shitty jrpgs do, at least not to the same degree
it's unbelievable that people are mindless and dull enough to actually enjoy games with filler random battle bullshit, where every fight is the exact same thing, dealt with in the exact same way, without any skill involved
>>260204727
you're not being elitist at all, the xbox port was horribly horribly botched and had a really bad history of problems during the updates that were supposed to fix it
that said I still hate all RPGs by whatever the fuck company makes Elder Scrolls
>That feel when never managed to beat Mother 3
But beat the shit out of Earthbound.I feel . . . g . . . o . . . o . . . d . . .
>>260203113
Should have got it for the platinum reward
>>260204986
Funnily enough there's this one really old Korean RPG called Seal that played a lot like Earthbound with the whole seeing your party thing.
Although it's like FFVI in terms of combat
>>260205332
I'm not in the States. We don't get games.

>>260205612
It's mostly the absolute wackiness with decent gameplay working with it
>>260205612
Yes, but you can't approach it like the typical game. It's got repetitive moments, and requires some imagination to fully enjoy, but it's one of the comfiest and realest games there is.
>>260205612
Fuck yes I love this game.
I love it so much I went back and beat Mother.

you're making a lot of assumptions, jesus christ you are autismal as fuck about this

I will play Earthbound but holy fuck dude, in the future if you're going to attempt to argue with a person, at least fucking learn to read what they wrote

I liked JRPGs.
And I thought Earthbound is pretty shit.
No strategy to the fights.
Story was about as deep as a pokemon game.
>hurruhuhru expecting a story on the snes

Everything else was "eh". I'd rather play breath of fire.

This song is my fucking jam.
I get chills every time you transition to Winters for the first time in Earthbound, because this fucking track starts playing when you take control of jeff. Oh god. It's so good.
>>260207452
Fights got a bit more involved later in the game for sure, the real charm of the game was the asthetic though. Most jrpgs were ripoffs of the standard dragon warrior esque motif.
I love the whole series, but I honestly think the first Mother was the one that had me hooked the most. It didn't have a vast soundtrack like 2 or 3, and the gameplay was primitive, but I think it had the best characters and the few tunes it had are some of the most memorable in video game history. I sincerely hope they remake Mother 1 some day.
>>260208067
Great fucking song.
>>260208195
despite hating that fucking game I gotta agree it had a lot of style for a game from 89 and those tunes are pretty jamful
I actually had them on my computer before I played the game
>>260208089
Eh, it was pretty much "what would an RPG in the city/town look like". Not much else is going on, just swapped names and shit. I guess it was strange in its own way, but that didn't go too far. At least an extra layer of something to consider in combat would have gone a long way. As it is, it aged terribly.
Did anyone else have real trouble getting into Mother 3? I loved mother 1 and 2, and anxiously waited and was inevitably crushed with earthbound 64 was cancelled. When I finally got to play mother 3...I dunno, I just ended up wanting to play earthbound again.
>>260208284
The SNES rendition of Snowman is my favorite. That soundchip, man.
>>260207506
>>260208067
Earthbound version of snowman was the worst though. Even the original was better and it was just beeps and boops.
>>260208515

This thread is like 5 guys posting amongst themselves, I'm totally not exaggerating
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icSsuyBGxtc
Such a simple tune, but it's beautiful, like so many things in this game. Looks like I'm going to be replaying some Earthbound here soon.
Still have my fingers crossed that we'll see Lucas for smash.I wish Paula could get in the game too.
>>260210008
Yeah that's exactly what Hitler would say
>>260210121
I am one hundred percent serious don't play Mother
somewhat stylistically neat but every time you get a new member on your team they are at the lowest level possible and they will immediately die everywhere you go unless you fucking grind and grind and grind
just like
read a walkthrough of it
http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound0/
boom it has pictures so you basically see everything
I don't know why people ever play JRPGs when you accomplish the same thing by reading someone's playthru while listening to the music in like 1/10th the time
also take note that even the people who like the game agree that it's primitive and mainly enjoyable for the artistic style or whatever
>>260210425
I'm totally not hitler in disguise, if that's what you're trying to say. It's not like nazi science has given me immortality and i am secretly pulling the strings of world politics.
>>260210393
I'll give it a try
I loved using Ness and Lucas in ssb but have never played their original games and feel like I should give them a chance
>>260210393
I'll bite. It's a good game. It obviously has flaws, but the atmosphere and characters make up for any of that.
>>260210635
If you like classic jrpgs you will like earthbound. It's that simple
>>260209691
I would but theyre almost all in a 30gb unsorted folder so...
>>260210635
It's worth it. Fun and unique story that you will make good memories with.
>>260208987
The hell are you talking about?

I'm not to sure what point you are trying to make there. I mean, if you like a certain type of game, you are gonna go out and play other games like it. It's that simple.
>>260210393
Actually there are flaws in everything. I guess the flaws in Earthbound just didn't stick out to the people who enjoyed it.
Well, actually that's kind of obvious. But really though we all have our own tastes and it's cool that you don't like it. It'd be nice if you could just leave us to our thread and maybe you can make a thread about a game you like better.. but really I guess if you wanna stick around then that's cool too. No one's telling you what to do.
>>260210635
>>260210868
Awesome! I hope you like it lots. Just sit back, enjoy all the little things the game does and have fun.
>>260211083
I have to agree with this Anon. But for me it wasn't so much the story as it was the atmosphere, gameplay, visuals and music. I mean I really liked the story but dang those other things just took the cake.
>>260210635
I like Ness and the Onett stage in SSB but I have to tell you the game is bad. Fair enough if you want to see for yourself though
>>260210868
No they don't. The gameplay was atrocious. As much as I liked the weirdness of the game for the first few hours, the gameplay made me turn it off and never play it again. Well I turned off the emulator, it never released in my territory
>>260210876
This statement is wrong, not just for this game but the statement that somehow liking a classic RPG means you will like them all
>>260211220
>if you like dicks in your ass you will like more dicks in your ass
Not even clever, you probably will.

how long has it been since you guys figured out emulators existed?
>>260211583
I've been using emulators since I was 6, 15 years ago
I didn't know how to set one up til I was 9 tho, so I just played GB and SNES games on my computer til then
Take a melody
>>260211770
im going to have to ask you to stop singing
>>260211567
yeah you might get into an argument where you have to actually make an intelligent point and that would be hard
let's instead all keep jizzing ourselves over a game without actually talking about it, we'll totally gain more as people by doing that
>>260211458
But if you like a jrpg, then you are predisposed to enjoy other jrpgs. Especially one that is an arguably decent jrpg such as earthbound.
>>260211563
That's a very nice painting. I loved Mother 1 with it's atmosphere and everything. Well, to be honest here, I didn't like it at first but once I got into it a little more everything just sort of came together and it became a masterpiece. The atmosphere was quite a bit different but still really similar to Earthbound. It was almost like Earthbound but without too much of the quirkiness and weird things going around, but in place of that it just sort of felt more "grand", if that makes sense.
>Beat Earthbound for the first time a few weeks back

Final Fantasy is several times more complex than Earthbound and it came out years earlier. EB was way behind the times at its release

You sound like someone who only played the game up until threed and just stopped. If you had played any further you would have seen how in depth the combat could get, with different shields, combat items, and dealing with large groups of enemies. Not claiming its combat was revolutionary, but it did a lot of things well.

The "Earthbound" album should have the download links right on the page I linked to earlier, so yeah. Anyways, enjoy!

I first played Earthbound/Mother 2 in 1997 when I was 11 because my cousin gave me her SNES and a copy of the game plus the guide. It was the first RPG I ever played and it completely changed how I saw video games. I realized then video games could be art. That doesn't excuse the current trend of overly cinematic games with no substance as far as gameplay goes.

Not really. Maybe in the early game (and by that I mean maybe the first 15 minutes).
But the way your HP bar slides when you get hit will become really important as you get more HP, because it means you can keep fighting even if you got a deadly blow, or you can have enough time to heal.
And there's also the PP (magic) management; I recommend you to actually use the healing items so that you can use the PP to damage your foes to kill them before they get a chance to hit you.
I literally just started playing Mother 2 today. Didn't even know it was the 20th anniversary. When do I get other party members? I just beat Frank and the weird ant thing in Onett

I was only disappointed that it was a lot more linear than Earthbound and had a lot less funny dialog. Still like it more than Earthbound though because of the rhythm fight system and the feels. I have to say though that I played it straight after Mother 2 without any hype/waiting in between.

In the future, you'll guard when a character is low on health and you want to get them healed ASAP. Make sure you know your character's speed, as well, to know who can heal the quickest.

>Implying the combat doesn't get more intense
-The order of killing foes can matter because some may blow up on you when you murder them.
The tree itself is a fine 1st example of the game showing you some shit, by far the strongest foe there, able to wreak your shit in if given a chance, blows up on your face when killed. You have to murder shit around it 1st because if you don't you die from the blast most of the time. Foes around it could be doing shit like stealing PP, giving a status affect, and more. Now the tree being open to paralysis might be nice an all, but you might not have that when you 1st fight it.
Later on some foes take the whole blow up on you thing and go medic for the enemy team. By now you are a lot stronger yes, but you still might not want a bomb in your face. Still if you don't kill this thing fast enough you'll have to deal with a prolonged fight.
-Several foes can come into fights with auto shields on
It isn't so bad at 1st when they only have a shield of light, sure it is annoying but whatever. You can power through them. But then they can do some real horrible shit later.
A "black mage" type foe casting non stop fire on you and shit has a psychic power shield on, it also blows up on you when you beat it.
Really there is a lot more but meh.

>>260222302
Goddamit I cannot but think about the Pillar men.
>>260229595
The funny thing is, I've done a solo game with every character (read, use cheats and such to remove party, switch them out when needed)
I made it a goal not to level too much mind you but:
-diamond band is best arm band, sorry but full brian shock protection is so much better than a 10-30 extra defense.
-super bombs are awesome
-brain food lunch with salt is awesome
-Ness is still overall the easiest, but man Poo and him switch places a lot, no wonder they give him late. Some areas are harder for him by himself mind you, and shit like homesick can be a game over, but still. The fact that he can use some auto heal points others can't is nice as well (the game is programed to respond to him). Also he is the only one who's encounter system isn't messed up of course so you don't have to rethink about how you get into battles like you do with Paula, Jeff, and Poo (who are all different in this area, each of them actually). He has the easist end game overall of course. And man you really learn to love salt with brain food lunch with him by end game, it almost feels like it is cheating. Paraylsis is still a 1hko on so many and you learn to love it more.
-Poo, he can teleport out of Thread and nothing happens bad game wise, in fact you got to love teleport. Shields are a big help. Life up and not having to pack salt with brain food lunch is a huge help. Overall his game is quick, guy is awesome. Poo does have to juggle his equipment though, Bracer of King's removal of brainshock guard seems like a no brainer to not equip it, but that extra luck is very useful. Taking off the cloak of kings for an earth pendant gives full flash, fire, and freeze guard, but you lose 40 defense and 40 speed of course. Freeze lets him one shot a lot of horrible monsters as well that Ness would have loved to smash up. The sword of kings of course lets you do physical attacks with the guy some w/o having to rely on bombs/power shield (oh my god, that shield is a life saver for him).

Its sad that normalfags have taken over /v/
I'm playing through EarthBound on the Wii U VC after I beat MOTHER about a month ago (the MOTHER 1+2 fan translation by Tomato), and I'm not sure what to say. I'm only in Twoson, but I don't know whether I like it more than MOTHER.
I mean, there's something I like about the simplicity of the first game. Enemies sometimes drop items, I can encounter enemies just by running back and forth, making grinding easier, and it's fairly easy to read all the dialogue in the game. But in EarthBound, there's just so much dialogue that I'm afraid of missing. There are a ton of items, some of which only have like a 1/100 chance of dropping from the enemy, and it just feels like there's so much to miss if I do something the wrong way.
I talked to this guy in Burglin Park who wanted to buy a For Sale Sign from me, but I didn't own one yet, so I bought it from the other guy, but when I tried talking to the first guy again, the option wouldn't come up to sell it to him anymore. Just what the heck did I miss?
>>260233150
-Paula, you aren't beating mondo mole at 1st like Ness and Poo can (by para and by power shield), not for a while. trillionage sprout will be very luck based to beat but can happen though. Paula is fast, that will always save you. Paula has to be careful with items more than Ness and Poo though. For starters while she can restore her health still at least, Pray is wild, and not very useful except in battles that won't kill you (few and far between, 1/16 to 1/8 most of the time for hp restore isn't good), but it can come in handy if it doesn't want to kill you as well. Freeze 1 shots so many evil foes for her though. But man by end game you got to juggle some bombs and healing items around. However by end game as well you can laugh at foes like starman, who won't kill you because of a psychic shield but will certainly more than murder themselves. Oh and the magic fry pan if you can get it is awesome, makes her hp last longer than Jeff, lets her sometimes hit hard w/o having to use a bomb, and also leaves her standing with 1 hp a lot for the auto back up. The longer fights take with her is very bad, and if you run out of items you may have to retreat.

>>260233150
-Jeff, all will be hell until he can get his heavy bazooka, which makes item management so much easier (read he doesn't have to worry about running out as fast). Jeff overall is the hardest IMO. If you aren't trying to level up that much you'll have to be at level 50 or so before he can use it though. Jeff's hp sucker won't work if he is dropping to 0 hp, and while Jeff may have more HP than Paula his does drain faster (guts and that, plus again limited restore items). As an added kick Jeff doesn't even get an offense restore with magic butterflies (that 20 pp per time + spawn areas with them is pretty useful). Jeff's speed is very important as well. And since his speed is linked to bottle rockets working, which is linked to being able to protect yourself vs things like Flash, that can be hard. Jeff is like Paula in that he isn't beating mondo mole, but also will not win easily vs. even shit like the titantic ant. Really you may want to grind for a couple of bombs just to get out of Onett, that is how bad it can be. Your 1 big bottle rocket, yeah make it count man. Trillionage sprout isn't being done by him as well. The good thing with Jeff is, at least you only have to pack a few multi-bottle rockets to murder bosses in the end, but the trip there will be hell. Also I should point out that using teleport unless needed by story reasons for Jeff and Paula (read to get to winters when you have to go to Stonehenge base) was cheating in my book. Which really was bad when the world stopped linking together after Fourside. Had to use Escargo Express as well which really felt like cheating because you have to use Ness to get it but man, you can't throw away some things like fucking packs of bubble gum man. To be fair, I didn't use them in the lost underworld man.
So yeah, Jeff and Paula, a lot of extra planning was done to make sure they would win item wise.
>>260235763
I also want to say that I'm getting the impression that EarthBound is the most lighthearted game in the series. MOTHER feels more "realistic" than EarthBound, even if there was a bunch of weird stuff like Devil Cars or walking nooses. It had a bit of an ominous feeling at times, but overall it felt like an adventure to uncover the truth. EarthBound gives off this really surreal vibe, especially evident in some of the character designs (like Porky's mom) and dialogue.
From the 5 minutes I've had MOTHER 3 on, it feels a bit more grim in tone. Like, I don't know how to describe it, but it doesn't have that inherent surreal cheeriness that's present when I was playing EarthBound. It feels like it's more of a fictional world than a parody depiction of an existing place, and I think I kinda like that, it makes it feel a bit more natural than EarthBound.
Also, what does everyone prefer to call the series? I usually call it the MOTHER series, because at least it's more accurate than calling it the "EarthBound" series.
When I refer to MOTHER's localization that was never officially released, I say Earth Bound (with the space, which was the technical name). When I refer to the localized sequel to MOTHER, I say EarthBound, but when referring to the Japanese version, I say MOTHER 2. I always say MOTHER 3, never EarthBound 2 or something stupid like that. I also never say "EarthBound Zero". It's not like I'm going to call the first Fire Emblem game on the Famicom "Fire Emblem Negative Six".
