Startropics is one of the NES games I can play through every so often. It's great... though last area spikes in difficulty so much.

It's one of the best games Nintendo has ever made, yet it's been long forgotten.

I'm not opposed to Duck Hunt Dog at all, but I can't see his moveset being as interesting as other potential retro characters.

After playing through The Mysterious Murusame Castle, there's no doubt in my mind that Takamaru would be an excellent playable character. That game is basically a more linear Zelda 1 (which doesn't sound good but by god it is) with more combat and movement options.

I can already see it now, his moveset I mean. If you wanted to make him feel like his game you'd have to make the character a hit and run type, he doesn't have much health. But when he closes in space between his enemies, his sword strikes are powerful! Though at a distance he has to rely on knives which aren't as impressive, but he can upgrade them to sickles for range and fire for power. He can even change the properties of how he throws them! Faster, triple shot, spread shot, 4 shot, there's a lot of combat potential for an NES game. That's not even factoring in the fact that he can reflect projectiles with a well timed sword slash or his own projectiles, that and he has an "invisibility" mode where he can phase through shit and just go ape on people with his sword. Oh and Inazuma Lightning could be his final smash too ...

There's a lot of potential with Takamaru. I hope he gets some relevancy soon from Nintendo what with his game finally being release to foreigners. I'd appreciate a modern game immensely, and with that hopefully a spot in the next game because as a sword character Takamaru is ripe with potential.

Honestly? Duck hunt dog. Duck Hunt was one of the first NES games I played and probably the one I put the most time into.

I can't think of a single character that fits OPs criteria and I wouldn't consider a wasted slot. All the remotely worthwhile NES characters had series that lived on to the SNES and beyond.
