Sonic and Shadow levels are SA2 are still the best 3D Sonic platforming the series has ever seen as far as I'm concerned.
Generations came close with taking Unleashed's gameplay, slowing things down just a tad, and giving you a few larger and less linear areas to run through, but for the most part you're still just running forward and most of the actual platforming is limited to mediocre 2D sections.

Is it worth playing the first Adventure having already played 2? Or is 2 just a straight upgrade from 1?

It's not like he was good in SA1.
Basically just Sonic except with much shorter stages and you fly over all obstacles with no effort so you're barely playing at all, really. Most of the story by far is spent walking around the dumb hub worlds and playing Sky Chase as a result
It's a very dull and empty experience.

In the games it's ambiguous. She's not been seen since the snd of Sonic Adventure 1, but she disappeared into exactly the same beam of heavenly light as Chaos. And Chaos came back with no explanation offered at all, so maybe Tikal could too.

Sonic vs Shadow 2 is still one of the highlights of the franchise for me. The whole cutscene as a build up to the fight, Shadow acknowledging Sonic properly for the first time, and he just saying that he loves adventure, like surviving a near death experience was nothing to him.

I'm actually not in my early 20s and never played SA2 back in the day, I just recently played it on the Gamecube a few weeks ago for the first time and while I can see why people complain about the controls and the Knuckles levels, I still think it's a fun game, Better than the kind of shit kids nowdays are playing at least. It's no Super Mario World or Sonic 2, but it's still a decent 3D adventure game with tons fo charm.

By the way I also disliked when they changed Sonic's design in Adventure, but I got over it already I guess, I just don't give a fuck anymore although I still prefer classic Sonic.
