A few months ago I had a serious intention of buying some web hosting and creating my own gaming site. Just reviews, though. No blog shit, no "gaming culture" tripe...just reviews of games I was playing or had finished. I decided against it, especially since we already had p4r which I thought filled the niche well enough.

All of this is making me consider it again, though. Web hosting is pretty cheap, all things considered, so if nothing else it could be a pet project, even if I don't get many/any readers.

I still remember Kane and Lynch.
I still remember IGN God Hand.
I still remember Gamespot Freedom Unite.
This has been a huge problem for so damn long and it seems every time the issue pops up there's always this little group of loud people telling you to shut up and don't dare talk about it.

I never really paid much attention to what journalists say, ever. I honestly could care less if they find something offensive, or if they think a game is good or not. I'll be the judge of that, depending on if I want to even play the game in the first place. That being said, I really don't want to see the gaming industry become effected by these people. Admittedly, most of the games I play are from Japan, and they generally don't give a fuck what anyone says, but I still don't like the idea of a small group of people dictating what kinds of games are made.

Because a publication is reliant on a publisher to supply review copies in order to release reviews when those reviews are still relevant, they have always been corrupt, by definition. A Publisher tells them what score a thing should get, or if they care about what score it gets, and it gets that, or the publication can go pound sand when the next game comes out.

As long as games journalism is for profit business they can never not be corrupt.

Totalbiscuit is a good one, in all seriousness. He is pretty fucking upfront with shilling, to the point he now straight up tells you if the video in question has a deal with him.

He also does a pretty solid job of reviews, and talks about important shit mostly and understands gaming pretty well.

Vidya journalism, with no other way to get money other than begging for site views or publisher money, is doomed to be a corrupt, unjust system.

Why do you think a big site like IGN has no SJW crap? Because they don't need clickbaits, their fanbase is large as it is. that in turn makes them report news without editorial bias.

Now they still have to rely on publisher money, so their reviews are bought. Easy as that.

People like Geoff and Sessler already state that they check everyday to see if they made their quota on site and video views in order to feed themselves. That's why being videogame journalist is hell.

Most sites should just go for the subscription fee model. I' m willing to pay for their food as long as they keep their SJW shit out, and make fair reviews, and report on actual vidya news as fast as IGN.
